Class schedule for today
Today (Jan. 16) is Martin Luther King Jr. Day; Wartburg alters the class schedule on this federal holiday to free students and faculty to participate in afternoon service projects. Class periods one through six will meet for 50 minutes with a 10-minute break between each. Weekday Chapel will not be held. Evening classes will meet at their regularly scheduled time.
  • Period 1 (regularly starting at 7:45 a.m.) will be 7:45-8:35 a.m.
  • Period 2 (9 a.m.) will be 8:45-9:35 a.m.
  • Period 3 (10:45 a.m.) will be 9:45-10:35 a.m.
  • Period 4 (noon) will be 10:45-11:35 a.m.
  • Period 5 (1:15 p.m.) will be 11:45 a.m. to 12:35 p.m.
  • Period 6 (2:30 p.m.) will be 12:45-1:35 p.m.
  • Day of Service kick-off in Levick Arena, 1:30 p.m.
Mail schedule for MLK Day
There will be no incoming or outgoing mail Monday, Jan. 16, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. The Wartburg Mail Center still will be open, and regular departmental mail runs will take place, though delivery times may be adjusted.
Vander Plaats, Red Wing to speak
Bob Vander Plaats, CEO of The Family Leader, and Donna Red Wing, former One Iowa executive director, will be speaking together Tuesday, Jan. 17, 11:30 a.m., in WBC 217. They will be discussing civil discussion even when disagreements are deep, and how to reach out to those you may consider your enemy. This event is hosted by Wartburg College Republicans. Don't miss 'Guys & Dolls' in Neumann
Wartburg Opera Workshop and Players Theatre present the beloved musical comedy "Guys & Dolls" in Neumann Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 20 and 21. Ticket prices: Wartburg students free with ID, adults $15, K-12 youth $5. All tickets are general admission. Adult tickets are available online at www.wartburg.edu/musical. K-12 youth tickets can be purchased at the door or by visiting the Ticket Office in the Saemann Student Center. Arrive early to get the best seats; doors will open 30 minutes prior to the show start time.
KNIGHTtime user group meeting
The next KNIGHTtime user group meeting will be Monday, Jan. 23, 9-10 a.m., in McCoy East. All users are invited to attend, but material is geared toward supervisors. We will address any challenges and provide solutions or tips to help you navigate the system more efficiently.     
Annual giving statements
The Advancement Office will send annual giving statements to all faculty and staff who contributed via payroll deduct in 2016. If you didn’t utilize payroll deduct but still want to receive a summary, call the Advancement Office, 352-8495.
Share what you’re reading
Join fellow bibliophiles at the Fireside Book Club every Tuesday, 7:30-8:30 p.m., in the faculty-in-residence apartment, Clinton Hall 223. There’s no set reading list, just bring your favorite book or what you’ve been reading lately and tell us about it. All Wartburg students, faculty, and staff are welcome. Unified Sports Day volunteers needed
Volunteers are needed for Unified Sports Day on Saturday, Feb. 11, 8:45 a.m.-1:30 p.m. You will spend the day with Special Olympic athletes, who will be participating in activities such as basketball, volleyball, crafts, and more. Sign up at the table in the Student Center during lunch and dinner hours Tuesday, Jan. 17, or email nicole.adair@wartburg.edu.
Panel discussion on women’s rights
The Waverly AAUW will host a Wartburg student panel discussion, Women’s Rights Experiences Outside of the Classroom, on Thursday, Jan. 19, 6-8 p.m., in WBC 215.
Phil and Lit Society
The first Winter Term meeting of the Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society will be Friday, Jan. 20, 4 p.m., in McCoy West. The speaker will be Dr. Marta Ferguson, a poet, freelance writer, and editor.
Price of stamps going up
The U.S. Postal Service will increase the price of first-class stamps to 49 cents, beginning Sunday, Jan. 22. Books of 20 stamps ($9.80) and individual stamps are available at the Mail Center for cash or check. The cost of postcard stamps, international first-class mail, and additional ounce charge will not change, and all are now “forever” stamps for their respective values. The American Family Insurance Experience
There are spots left in LS395: Leadership Insights – The American Family Insurance Experience, a P/D/F May Term course developed for highly motivated third- and fourth-year students who want the opportunity to observe and interact with the leadership team and members of the board of directors of a Fortune 500 company. The class is open to all majors with an interest in leadership and corporate social responsibility. Time will be split between Wartburg and Madison, Wis. Application available upon request, and due as soon as possible. For more information, email kimberly.folkers@wartburg.edu.
New general fitness class
The W will offer a new high-intensity interval training (HIIT) class in 2017. HIIT is a type of cardiorespiratory training that incorporates intervals of fast-paced training followed by intervals of rest. The new 30-minute class will offer an increased intensity workout in a shorter frame of time. HIIT begins Monday, Feb. 6, and meets Mondays and Wednesdays at 4:05 p.m. 
Doubles Pickleball League
The deadline to sign up for the Doubles Pickleball League is Monday, Jan. 16, at 10 a.m. Play begins the week of Jan. 16 in The W and ends in early March, or after tournament play is completed. Any combination of doubles is allowed. T-shirts will be given to the league champions. Cost is $30 per team. To sign up, email ryan.doty@wartburg.edu.
Leadership and Service Award nominations
Leadership and Service Award nomination forms are available and due by Friday, Feb. 3. Click here to nominate someone you know for one or more of the following awards: Nobility Award; Debbie Heida Award; Outstanding Organization; Outstanding International Senior; Dell Awards for Peace and Justice; Dell Awards for Peace and Justice: Peacemaker; Outstanding Organization Service Award; Outstanding Organization Adviser Award; Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges; John O. Chellevold Outstanding Staff Award; and Outstanding Academic Adviser. The awards ceremony will be Saturday, March 18, 1 p.m., in McCaskey Lyceum, with a reception to follow in the ballrooms. Posekany Literacy awards
Education Department and Education Unit faculty and students accepted into the Teacher Education Program (TEP), as well as Reading Endorsement students not admitted to the TEP, are eligible for special funding to attend the Iowa Reading Association ESEA Title 1 Conference June 27-28 in Ames. Early-bird registration fees range from $30-$190, and registration is open through March 31. Wartburg registrants may request reimbursement from the Institutional Advancement Office in Luther Hall (contact Suzie Kramer, 352-8495, for information). These literacy awards are available through the generosity of Leonard and Carol Posekany, parents of Education Department emeritae faculty Dr. Susan Sherwood and Dr. Peggy Pruisner. Additional financial information on Info Center
As was previously reported, in the spirit of transparency and in keeping faculty and staff informed about the College’s budget and related financial information, a new section has been created on the Business Office intranet site, called “Overall Budget & Financial Information." A few documents have been posted to that area already and we plan to continue to add more related documents. One such document is the College’s debt service requirements for the outstanding debt. Please click here to see that document. As additional documents are posted, a notice will be included in the Juice.
Help needed for Scholarship Day
We currently have 184 students registered to attend the Jan. 22 Scholarship Day. This is the largest Scholarship Day we have ever hosted! This means we will need all hands on deck to make this the best experience for these top prospective students and their families. If you have agreed to interview, be at lunch or work the Academic Fair, know that we are counting on you. If you have not signed up yet and are interested, please let Mallory Luensmann know as soon as possible or fill out this online form.
Inclusive mentoring with Dr. Eddie Moore
Wartburg staff members are invited to gather in the Chapel Commons on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 10:30-11:15 a.m., for a diversity and inclusion event focusing on inclusive mentoring. Dr. Eddie Moore, diversity and inclusion trainer, will lead the session as part of the 2016-17 NetVUE grant for Exploring Vocation. This event will help you stretch and grow in your mentoring work with students on campus. Coffee, tea, and treats will be served. If you have questions, contact Ramona Bouzard.
Blankets for Bremwood
Volunteer to make tie-blankets during MLK Day on Monday, Jan. 16. There will be two shifts for blanket making in the Chapel Commons: 2:30-4 p.m. and 4:30-6 p.m. Help us serve the residents at Bremwood, providing them with something to call their own. Keep on Learning proposals
The Alumni Office is requesting Keep on Learning proposals for the 2017-18 academic year. The Keep on Learning program offers a series of four-week courses to all residents of the Cedar Valley during seven months of the academic year. Click here for more information. 
Thank a mentor
January is National Mentoring Month. At Wartburg, we recognize the value of mentors in our lives; therefore, we invite you to recognize a mentor by filling out the “Thank a Mentor” form here. The form will be accessible until noon Monday, Jan. 23. Mentors will then receive a personalized electronic message that afternoon. If you have questions, contact TJ Warren. igKnight program welcoming mentees
Students interested in being partnered with a peer mentor during Winter Term are invited to sign up for the igKnight Mentoring Program. This peer mentoring program is designed to help students pursue and meet their academic, personal, and professional goals no matter where they are in their college experience. Faculty and staff are encouraged to invite students to be a part of the program as well. Students may join the program at any time by signing up here. Certified respite foster care providers needed
Respite Options of Northeast Iowa will offer a free training course on two Saturdays, Feb. 4 and Feb. 18, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Faith Evangelical Free Church in Sumner. Attendance at both sessions is required. Providers must be at least 19 years old at the time of application and 20 years old to provide respite, complete an application and certification process, and be able to make a one-year commitment to the program. 2017 German Film Series
The 2017 German Film Series: Profiles in Courage kicks off Tuesday, Jan. 17, with The Promise (Das Versprechen). The film, with English subtitles, follows Sophie and Konrad, who, in 1961, plan an escape from the eastern side of a divided Germany into the west. The film begins at 7:15 p.m. in WBC116. A student-led discussion will follow. The film series, sponsored by the Wartburg College German Institute and the German and German studies programs, is being presented in anticipation of the 500th anniversary of Luther’s Reformation. Click here for additional information about this film and the series.
Looking for a good book to read?
There still is space to join Dr. Erika Lindgren in the Hearthside Project during Winter Term. She will be reading The Edge of the World: A Cultural History of the North Sea and the Transformation of Europe. Students who read with her get a copy of the book and a chance to discuss nonfiction outside of the classroom setting. If interested, email Dr. Lindgren.
'Sexy/OFFENDER' now in art gallery
An exhibition featuring the works of Ben Moore and Byron Anway will open Monday, Jan. 9, at the Waldemar A. Schmidt Gallery. “Sexy/OFFENDER,” featuring pieces that combine online imaged-based culture and 18th-century French portraiture, will be on display through Feb. 12. A reception will be Friday, Feb. 10, 5-7 p.m. Click here for details.

Weekday Chapel services this week
Weekday Chapel services are held each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 10:15-10:35 a.m. in the Wartburg Chapel, and are a brief opportunity to gather with students, staff, and faculty to reflect on God and faith.Services are led by students, faculty, staff, the college pastors, and clergy from various area churches. Sanctuary features 'Echoes of the King' this week
Expect a relaxed time of Bible study, fellowship, worship band music, prayers, and communion. Sanctuary takes place at 9 p.m. each Wednesday in Chapel Commons (basement). Come by at 8:45 for snacks and conversation. This week's Sanctuary features Nucleus Johnson with “Echoes of the King,” tying Johnson’s personal narrative together with excerpts from Dr. King’s speeches.
Sunday worship
Pastor Ramona Bouzard will give the message Sunday, Jan. 22, 10:30 a.m., in Wartburg Chapel, and the Wartburg Choir will provide special music.

Condolences to Lynn Peters, associate professor of social work, whose mother-in-law, Sylvia Wendt, died Jan. 3. Click here for the obituary. 

Bob Starr died at his home in Clive, Iowa, Dec. 19, 2016. Bob was a tennis coach at Wartburg and taught in the Social Work department. He is survived by his wife, DD Starr, former chair of the Social Work Department. Click here for the obituary.

Angie Widner ’99 was named CEO of the Family YMCA of Black Hawk County, according to the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.

Head men's and women's tennis coach Chris Gustas ’11 spoke with the Marion Times aboiut what it took to land his new position at Wartburg.

The wrestling team took down Luther College 47-3, as reported by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, KWWL, and KNIA.

Sarah Mallen ’16 coached her South Tama Trojans to a four-game winning streak, according to the Tama News-Herald.

The wrestling team earned its seventh consecutive NWCA National Duals championship, as reported by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.

Wrestler Cross Cannone's ’19 win at the NWCA National Duals was featured in the Trumbull Times.

Members of the women's basketball team talked about their chemistry on and off the court with the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.

Head wrestling coach Eric Keller talked about his team's "remarkable run" at the National Duals with TrackWrestling.com.

The wrestling team advanced to the NWCA National Duals Division III semifinals, as reported by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.

Amy Long ’10 is the site administrator for Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont, according to the Fairmont Sentinel.

Zak Montgomery, assistant professor of Spanish, was named one of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier's 20 Under 40 for his efforts recruiting and retaining Latino/a students and his service to the Spanish-speaking community in the Cedar Valley.

Nick Mitchell ’00, Grand View University head wrestling coach, received the United States Sports Academy Distinguished Service Award, according to The Sport Digest.
