| Class schedule for today |
Today (Jan. 16) is Martin Luther King Jr. Day; Wartburg alters the class schedule on this federal holiday to free students and faculty to participate in afternoon service projects. Class periods one through six will meet for 50 minutes with a 10-minute break between each. Weekday Chapel will not be held. Evening classes will meet at their regularly scheduled time.
- Period 1 (regularly starting at 7:45 a.m.) will be 7:45-8:35 a.m.
- Period 2 (9 a.m.) will be 8:45-9:35 a.m.
- Period 3 (10:45 a.m.) will be 9:45-10:35 a.m.
- Period 4 (noon) will be 10:45-11:35 a.m.
- Period 5 (1:15 p.m.) will be 11:45 a.m. to 12:35 p.m.
- Period 6 (2:30 p.m.) will be 12:45-1:35 p.m.
- Day of Service kick-off in Levick Arena, 1:30 p.m.

| Vander Plaats, Red Wing to speak |
Bob Vander Plaats, CEO of The Family Leader, and Donna Red Wing, former One Iowa executive director, will be speaking together Tuesday, Jan. 17, 11:30 a.m., in WBC 217. They will be discussing civil discussion even when disagreements are deep, and how to reach out to those you may consider your enemy. This event is hosted by Wartburg College Republicans. | Don't miss 'Guys & Dolls' in Neumann |
| Wartburg Opera Workshop and Players Theatre present the beloved musical comedy "Guys & Dolls" in Neumann Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 20 and 21. | Mail schedule for MLK Day |
There will be no incoming or outgoing mail Monday, Jan. 16, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. The Wartburg Mail Center still will be open, and regular departmental mail runs will take place, though delivery times may be adjusted.

| The American Family Insurance Experience |
There are spots left in LS395: Leadership Insights – The American Family Insurance Experience, a P/D/F May Term course developed for highly motivated third- and fourth-year students who want the opportunity to observe and interact with the leadership team and members of the board of directors of a Fortune 500 company. The class is open to all majors with an interest in leadership and corporate social responsibility. Time will be split between Wartburg and Madison, Wis. | Davis Projects for Peace deadline extended |
Consider submitting a proposal for a project to be completed domestically or internationally this summer that promotes peace and addresses the root causes of conflict among parties. Projects should be creative, engaging, meaningful, and measurable. Project drafts are due Friday, Jan. 27, to Kristin Teig Torres in Student Life. The Davis Projects for Peace committee will meet the week of Jan. 30 to rank the proposals. The top two proposals will be forwarded to Wartburg College administration by Feb. 6. | New general fitness class |
The W will offer a new high-intensity interval training (HIIT) class in 2017. HIIT is a type of cardiorespiratory training that incorporates intervals of fast-paced training followed by intervals of rest. The new 30-minute class will offer an increased intensity workout in a shorter frame of time. HIIT begins Monday, Feb. 6, and meets Mondays and Wednesdays at 4:05 p.m.

| Doubles Pickleball League |
The deadline to sign up for the Doubles Pickleball League is Monday, Jan. 16, at 10 a.m. Play begins the week of Jan. 16 in The W and ends in early March, or after tournament play is completed. Any combination of doubles is allowed. T-shirts will be given to the league champions. Cost is $30 per team. To sign up, email ryan.doty@wartburg.edu.

| Posekany Literacy awards |
Education Department and Education Unit faculty and students accepted into the Teacher Education Program (TEP), as well as Reading Endorsement students not admitted to the TEP, are eligible for special funding to attend the Iowa Reading Association ESEA Title 1 Conference June 27-28 in Ames. Early-bird registration fees range from $30-$190, and registration is open through March 31. Wartburg registrants may request reimbursement from the Institutional Advancement Office in Luther Hall (contact Suzie Kramer, 352-8495, for information). | Price of stamps going up |
| The U.S. Postal Service will increase the price of first-class stamps to 49 cents, beginning Sunday, Jan. 22. Books of 20 stamps ($9.80) and individual stamps are available at the Mail Center for cash or check. The cost of postcard stamps, international first-class mail, and additional ounce charge will not change, and all are now “forever” stamps for their respective values. | 2017 German Film Series |
The 2017 German Film Series: Profiles in Courage kicks off Tuesday, Jan. 17, with The Promise (Das Versprechen). The film, with English subtitles, follows Sophie and Konrad, who, in 1961, plan an escape from the eastern side of a divided Germany into the west. The film begins at 7:15 p.m. in WBC116. A student-led discussion will follow. The film series, sponsored by the Wartburg College German Institute and the German and German studies programs, is being presented in anticipation of the 500th anniversary of Luther’s Reformation. | Extended dining hours, and board plan changes |
| Dining Services has extended the Saturday evening dining hours in Mensa to be 5:15-6:30 p.m., effective immediately. The intent is to make Saturday dinner more convenient and less crowded for students. Also, please remember to verify that you are on the board plan that you want. If you need to make changes, come to the Dining Office (located behind the Info Desk in Saemann Student Center) and sign a form to make those changes before Tuesday, Jan. 17, at 4 p.m. No changes will be allowed after that. |

| Certified respite foster care providers needed |
| Respite Options of Northeast Iowa will offer a free training course on two Saturdays, Feb. 4 and Feb. 18, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Faith Evangelical Free Church in Sumner. Attendance at both sessions is required. Providers must be at least 19 years old at the time of application and 20 years old to provide respite, complete an application and certification process, and be able to make a one-year commitment to the program. While this is an unpaid position, respite providers do receive a small stipend and help with mileage costs when they travel to do respite. She will be reading The Edge of the World: A Cultural History of the North Sea and the Transformation of Europe.
