Updates planned for historic Players Theatre

The President’s Cabinet recently approved a plan that would make Players Theatre a more usable space for some college functions, including theatrical production preparations like set building, prop and costume storage, and rehearsal. The north end of the building will be made available to the Drumline to use for storage. The decision was made following a discussion about how to proceed with the building, and the Cabinet decided a modest investment would be appropriate given the space needs on campus.

Improvements will include new heating and air conditioning systems, new doors that will allow for sets to be moved out of the space, and roof and window repairs or replacement.

In addition to providing the Wartburg Players and Opera Workshop a centralized location for their props and costumes, the move will free up much-needed storage space in the Fine Arts Center, Manny Holmes garage, and the lower level of the Saemann Student Center under McCaskey Lyceum.

The project is estimated to cost between $200,000 and $250,000 and will be paid for with the President’s Strategic Reserve Fund. Some work is anticipated to begin this summer, but the building is not expected to be ready for use until fall 2023.

Memorial tree planting to honor Wuertz

A tree will be dedicated in memory of Wuertz, who was instrumental in the development of women’s athletics at Wartburg. Her husband, John, a 1973 Wartburg graduate, was director of the Physical Plant for nearly 25 years.
