Flexible work schedule proposal clarified
|
Earlier this year, President Colson provided information about steps the college is taking to help address our employee hiring and retention challenges. Since then, there have been questions about the flexible work schedule piece. In the original communication, he stated that:
For positions where a flexible work schedule is possible (e.g., working four 10-hour days per week in the summer, instead of five 8-hour days) while still providing appropriate service, allow more individuals to follow a flexible schedule if desired and include this option in the job posting when appropriate. This can start immediately, but all schedule changes must first be approved by your supervisor.
This benefit was intended to apply only to hourly staff, as salaried staff already enjoy great flexibility in their schedules based on the nature of salaried positions. For example, if a salaried individual needs to leave at 3 p.m. for an appointment, they do not need to take any PTO for leaving early. On the flip side, there are often times where a salaried person must work before and after office hours as well as on the weekends but will not receive additional compensation.
If you are a salaried individual and believe you have an unusual situation that would allow you to complete your work while following a nontraditional schedule, guarantee the same level of service to others, and not create additional burdens or disruptions for others, you may discuss options with your supervisor/manager and appropriate Cabinet member. If all are supportive, such a proposal should be shared with Jamie Hollaway, director of human resources, to determine if such a schedule would be feasible.

Food donations sought on first and third Mondays
|
|
The St. Elizabeth Bread Basket is seeking donations from faculty and staff for the college’s student food pantry. Items needed include soups, pasta, pasta sauce, ramen noodles, bread (white, wheat), granola bars, rice, cereal, snacks (chips, cookies, popcorn), fresh fruits (apples, oranges, bananas), potatoes, onions, half-gallons of milk, eggs, yogurt, and microwaveable frozen pizzas. Donations are accepted in the Student Success Center every first and third Monday in June, July, and August.

Dr. Zak Montgomery, professor of Spanish and Harry & Polly Slife Professor in Humanities, published translations of two poems from Portuguese into English in the new collection “Raízes – Brazilian Women Poets in Translation” (Venas Abiertas, 2022), edited by the Mulherio das Letras feminist collective. The translated poems are “No espelho / Into the Mirror” by Beth Fernandes and “Brasa / Burning Ember” by Mahe Silva. |

Kuni Terasawa, associate professor of religion, presented “What can religions provide as a solution in the context of the rapid changes and conflicts of global affairs?” at the conference of the International Association for Religious Freedom in Tokyo, Japan, on May 21. The presentation included discussions of religion and nationalism in Russia and Ukraine as well as the peace activities of Terasawa’s brother, the Rev. Junsei Terasawa, a Buddhist monk. |

Kuni Terasawa, associate professor of religion, presented “Liberal Arts College, Pandemic Effects, and Students’ Learnings in the U.S.: In Case of Wartburg College” on May 11, 2022, at the faculty development seminar at Aoyama Gakuin University’s School of Global Studies and Collaboration in Tokyo, Japan.
