In the spirit of the Wartburg College Mission Statement, Student Senate annually funds two $500 scholarships for Wartburg students who embody the principles set forth in the mission statement, are well-rounded students, and exhibit leadership through their involvement on and/or off campus. SAFE movie night Thursday

Student Senate elections are almost here! Applications are due Monday, Jan. 28, at 11:59 p.m. The mandatory elections meeting will take place Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 4 p.m., in the Hub Conference Room. There will be a debate Monday, Feb. 11, at 6:30 p.m. in Buckmaster (WBC 214). On the day of the election, ballots will be sent to all students via Wartburg email. MLK Day shortened schedule
|
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, Jan. 21; Wartburg alters the class schedule on this federal holiday to free students and faculty to participate in afternoon service projects. Class periods one through six will meet for 50 minutes with a 10-minute break between each. Weekday Chapel will not be held. Evening classes will meet at their regularly scheduled time.
• Period 1 (regularly starting at 7:45 a.m.) will be 7:45-8:35 a.m.
• Period 2 (9 a.m.) will be 8:45-9:35 a.m.
• Period 3 (10:45 a.m.) will be 9:45-10:35 a.m.
• Period 4 (noon) will be 10:45-11:35 a.m.
• Period 5 (1:15 p.m.) will be 11:45 a.m. to 12:35 p.m.
• Period 6 (2:30 p.m.) will be 12:45-1:35 p.m.

Wartburg CHATS: Senate Diversity Committee

'Band Together FTK' at Joe's on Friday
|
Wartburg College Dance Marathon will be hosting "Band Together FTK" on Friday, Jan. 18. The Jake Simon Band will perform from 8 to 11 p.m. at Joe's Knighthawk in Waverly. Ticket sales will be on the first floor of the Saemann Student Center near The Wartburg Store on Jan. 14, 15 and 18 from 11:15 a.m.-1:15 p.m. and Jan. 14, 15 and 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets, which are $10, may also be purchased at the door. All proceeds go to the UI Stead Family Children's Hospital.

The Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society will hold its first Winter Term meeting Friday, Jan. 18, at 4 p.m. in McCoy West in Saemann Student Center. Michael Luebbers, Wartburg biology alumnus and 19-year employee of the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service, will present “Got Dirt — Get Soil.”

Weather-related closure policy

This time of year, the chance for severe winter weather grows more likely. For such situations, the college has a weather-related closure policy posted here.
The policy also is linked from the front page of the Student Handbook page and the Academic Affairs website.

Please remember to use caution when snow and ice are present on sidewalks and steps. Operations & Maintenance will remove snow and add salt or sand to icy spots on sidewalks and steps on campus according to the priority snow removal map. Parking lots will be cleared and salted or sanded as needed by a third party.

Hearthside Project reading groups

Students are invited to be part of the Hearthside Project, where faculty and staff choose a book to explore with a small group of students in an informal environment. Orange Connection in Des Moines is a unique, career-mentoring opportunity to build your network and gain specific knowledge about an occupation or career in which you are interested. New date for State of the College address

Due to changes in President Colson’s travel schedule, the State of the College address will now be held Tuesday, Jan. 15, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in McCaskey Lyceum.

UPS dropoff at Mail Center
|
The Wartburg Mail Center is a UPS dropoff location but NOT a UPS Store. The Mail Center can only accept return packages with bar-code and mailing label. If your Amazon.com return generated a QR code, you may be able to cancel your return, then re-initiate the return choosing “UPS Dropoff” instead of the “no printer” option. Stop by or email the Mail Center for further assistance.

Did you have some amazingly delicious foods over Christmas break? Do you want to be able to have it at school, too? Submit your recipe to Shelly Geweke before Friday, Jan. 31. Recipes for entrees, salads, ethnic dishes, vegan entrees, side dishes and desserts are welcome. Recipes will be taste-tested and may be considered for the 2019-20 Mensa menu. Please include your name and contact information for verification. It’s an easy process, there is no hassle, and it’s a great way to add some yummy foods to our menu!

Davis Projects for Peace details
|
In its twelfth year, the Davis Projects for Peace is an invitation to undergraduates in the Davis United World College Scholars Program to design grassroots projects that they will implement during the summer of 2019. The projects judged to be the most promising and feasible will be funded at $10,000 each. The objective is to encourage and support today's motivated youth to create and try out their own ideas for building peace. Wartburg students wishing to submit a Davis Projects for Peace proposal must submit their application using this link by Jan. 14 at noon. Volunteers needed for Unified Sports Day

Volunteers are needed for Unified Sports Day on Saturday, Feb. 9, from 8:50 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. You will spend time with Special Olympic Athletes participating in activities such as basketball, volleyball, crafts, and more. Weekday Chapel services are from 10:15 to 10:35 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in Wartburg Chapel; Sunday services begin at 10:30 a.m. Chapel time is a brief opportunity to gather with students, staff, and faculty to reflect on God and faith. Interfaith chapels will be held the last Wednesday of each month during the semester.

Sanctuary is a casual service that takes place on Wednesday nights in the Chapel Commons. It provides students with the opportunity to relax and center themselves around God’s word in the midst of their busy week. All are welcome at 9 p.m. in Chapel Commons (basement), and come early at 8:45 for snacks.
