Director on campus for MBK Symposium 

Immigrant experiences in the U.S. workforce will be the focus of the Michaelson, Briner & Kildahl Literary Symposium. “The U-Turn,” the final installment in Luis Argueta’s trilogy documenting immigration issues in Iowa, will have its Midwest premiere Monday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m., in McCaskey Lyceum. Argueta, an award-winning filmmaker from Guatemala, and Bea Gallardo, the film’s producer, will be on hand for discussion after the screening; click here to see a trailer. Argueta also will be the featured symposium speaker at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, in McCaskey Lyceum. His talk is titled “Breaking the Silence in Times of Fear: Life-Changing Immigrant Stories and Community Solidarity." Both events are free and open to the public. 

 
HOMECOMING HAPPENINGS
Parade and Renaissance Faire 
Groups and organizations of all types are invited to walk, ride, or dance during the Homecoming parade on Saturday, Oct. 14. Be creative! Wartburg student organization entries can win cash prizes for first ($500), second ($300), and third ($150) place. Groups can show Wartburg spirit by setting up a booth at the Renaissance Faire on Saturday, Oct. 14! A $25 fee will be applied to your organization's campus account; we will supply your group with one or two tables. Click here to register for both by Thursday, Oct. 5.

Parade supplies available 
Parade supplies are available free of charge for student organizations to create parade entries. Items include window paint, vehicle decorations, hayrack supplies, candy and more. Personalized banners will also be provided for interested organizations. All items will be stored for reuse for future Homecoming & Family Weekend celebrations. Email the Homecoming Committee for more information.

Faculty/Staff Spirit Contest 
Show your Knight pride in the office decorating Spirit Contest. The decorator of the first-place office will receive the traveling spirit trophy to proudly display for the next year. Please email homecoming@wartburg.edu by Monday, Oct. 9, if you would like to participate. Judges will be coming around Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 4 p.m. to decide a winner and deliver the trophy.

Faculty vs. students basketball game 
Sign up for the faculty vs. students basketball game, which will be played Wednesday, Oct. 11, from 7 to 9 p.m. at The W. Teams need five to seven members, and coed teams are encouraged. The deadline to sign up is Friday, Oct. 6, by 11 p.m. Each member of the winning team will get a $10 gift card for the Konditorei. If interested, click here to sign up.

Audition for Reformation celebration play 
Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to audition for the November production of A Parade of Witnesses. The play focuses on how Martin Luther touched people differently in his own time as conveyed through Luther’s conversations with a variety of contemporary and future personae. It will be presented as part of the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Contact Sally Malcolm with questions. Auditions will take place at the following times in Choral Hall in the FAC:
  • Wednesday, Oct. 4, 7 p.m.
  • Monday, Oct. 9, 7 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 10, 8 p.m.

Math, Computer Science & Physics Department Seminar 
The next Math, Computer Science & Physics Department Seminar will be Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 11:30 a.m., in Science Center 134. Sabah Munir ’19, a biochemistry major, will discuss her summer research experience in a talk titled Genetic Risk Factors for Preterm Birth: Biostatistics at the University of Iowa. All are invited. Refreshments will be provided.
Mindfulness meditation program 
Cynthia Bane, professor of psychology, will run a Koru mindfulness program for faculty and staff. The program consists of four sessions on the following Wednesdays from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m.: Oct. 4, Oct. 11, Oct. 25, and Nov. 1. Email cynthia.bane@wartburg.edu if you are interested in participating or interested about times and dates of future Koru programs.
Phil and Lit Society
The next meeting of the Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society will be Friday, Oct. 6, at 4 p.m., in McCoy West. Dr. Charles Figura, professor of physics and director of Platte Observatory, will present Thirteen Years with the Lord of the Rings: What Cassini Has Taught Us (So Far).
Christmas with Wartburg tickets for faculty and staff 
As faculty and staff at Wartburg, you have the opportunity to purchase tickets for Christmas with Wartburg in advance of the public. Faculty and staff will receive an email Monday, Oct. 9, with a link and instructions on how to purchase your seats for the Dec. 1-3 performances. Tickets go on sale to the public Monday, Oct. 16. Faculty and staff who cannot attend the performances or do not wish to purchase tickets may obtain up to two free passes to attend the Nov. 29 dress rehearsal, which will be available at the Info Desk after Oct 9.

Career Expo on Oct. 5
Please encourage students to attend the Career Expo on Thursday, Oct. 5, 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m., in The W’s Hall of Champions. The expo is intended for all majors and all class years as a way to make connections with real businesses, organizations, and graduate/professional schools. Some tables may even have applications, so students should dress to impress, bring a resume, and be prepared. Reformation Anniversary Celebration Table Talks
On Tuesday, Oct. 31, faculty, staff, and students will have the chance to share their thoughts and questions during Wartburg’s 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation Celebration Table Talks. The groups will have guided discussion and honest conversation about the college’s mission of faith and learning and the future of Spiritual Life and Campus Ministry. No classes, lessons, practices, or college-sponsored meetings will be held during this time, and all offices or departments that are able to close will to enable students, staff, and faculty to participate. Faculty Development Committee funds awarded 
Kit Kleinhans, the Mike and Marge McCoy Family Distinguished Chair in Lutheran Heritage and Mission, was awarded funds by the Faculty Development Committee to present at the Lutheran Women in Theological and Religious Studies conference in Boston, Nov. 16-18. She will present Nevertheless, She Persisted: Protestant Women’s Voices Then and Now.
ELCA seminary reps to visit campus
ELCA seminary representatives will be on campus Monday, Oct. 2, and invite students to lunch in the Den between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to talk about Listening for God in a Noisy World. Also, learn more about theological education — how does God lay claim on our busy lives?

Weekday Chapel services
Weekday services are from 10:15 to 10:35 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in Wartburg Chapel. They are a brief opportunity to gather with students, staff, and faculty to reflect on God and faith. Interfaith chapels will be held the last Wednesday of each month during the semester. It’s a great time to put regular worship on your schedule. This week’s Weekday Chapel looks like this:

PROFESSIONAL NOTES
 

Dr. Bill Withers, professor of journalism and communication, presented the opening keynote address for the first Leadership Summit hosted at Clear Creek Amana High School. The all-day conference attracted more than 200 students from middle and high schools across the eastern Iowa corridor. Withers’ address focused on students developing their strengths and personalities as they better serve their own communities. He also used the opportunity to invite high school juniors in the audience to Wartburg’s own Summer Leadership and Service Summit next June and July.

Stephanie Klemetson, music tour, camp, and promotion manager, recently attended the College Music Tour Managers Association Convention at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. Klemetson presented Tour Planning 101: Back to Basics, which focused on strategic planning and best practices in ensemble tour management. 

Dr. Kit Kleinhans, Mike and Marge McCoy Family Distinguished Chair in Lutheran Heritage and Mission, will receive a Valparaiso University Alumni Achievement Award on Oct. 1.

Dr. Penni Pier spoke to the Waverly Exchange Club on Sept. 7. She shared the history, evolution, and potential future of Wartburg’s Knight Vision streaming program with the group’s members.

Rachel Husbyn Giesmann ’04 is a finalist for the nation's highest honor in math and science teaching, the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

Dr. Tony Frank ’81, president of Colorado State University and chancellor of the Colorado State University System, was named the 2018 Citizen of the West by the National Western Stock Show, as reported by K99 Radio
