Donate to food drive to beat Luther

Wartburg Spiritual Life & Campus Ministry and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church have challenged Luther College to a food drive competition. The losing side’s campus pastor will wear their rival’s shirt to one chapel service. Drop off your donations at Wartburg Chapel or St. Paul's, or you can donate cash online (please designate your gift to the Campus Ministries Food Drive) through Sunday, Feb. 12.

RSVP deadline nears for supervisor summit

A Student Employee Supervisor Summit will be held Feb. 28 at the Waverly Area Veterans Post. All faculty and staff who mentor and supervise students as part of the student employment program are invited to attend this free professional development event. Bill Withers, Angela Weekley, and Brenda Clark Hamilton will be keynote speakers. Lunch will be provided. Register by Friday, Feb. 10, to attend.

Performers sought for Drag Show

Alliance is seeking student, staff, and faulty performers for its annual Drag Show at 8 p.m. March 18. This year's theme is “Disco!” You don't need any prior stage experience — it’s all for fun and entertainment!

Attend conference on student leadership

The local chapter of the American Association of University Women and the Institute for Leadership Education will cover airfare and registration for a student interested in attending the National Conference of College Women Student Leaders. The conference is May 31-June 3 at the University of Maryland, College Park. The successful applicant will be asked to write a short summary of the experience and present at an AAUW meeting. To apply, email both michael.gleason@wartburg.edu and malinda.groth@gmail.com with the answers to these questions:

 

1. Why are you interested in this experience? (Consider how it aligns with your future goals and objectives.)
2. How will your participation help you enhance the Wartburg community?

The Alumni & Parent Engagement Office reminds employees to encourage alumni to notify the college of life updates (milestones, job changes, etc.) and address changes.

Prep for TriByKnight with training class

The W has scheduled a 12-week triathlon training class beginning Wednesday, Feb. 15. Classes meet from 6 to 8 p.m. each Wednesday through May 3. Accomplished triathlete and experienced triathlon coach Penny Andorf and Janet McCullough, an accomplished triathlete and USA Swimming-certified coach and official, will lead workouts focused on swim technique, endurance training, brick training, run form and fitness, cycling skills, and power transitions. Nutrition basics and yoga/meditation also will be discussed. This class is designed for beginner through advanced athletes. Register today at the Welcome Desk, by calling 319-352-8311, or online. Cost is $80 for students, $150 for members of The W, and $250 for guests.

Learn more about this completely online program, which is offered on our state-of-the-art learning management system, Canvas. The cohort-based program allows busy working professionals to take one course at a time. Those who start in fall 2023 and successfully complete all requirements would graduate in May 2025. Join S.A.L.S.A. for a candlelight dinner to learn what S.A.L.S.A. is and what the group’s plans are for the future. Both employees and students are invited to the event, though there is a limited number of seats. Signup for the event will take place at the Mensa entrance Feb. 1 and 2 during dinner. This event will cost students one meal from their meal plan along with three points.

Black Student Union (BSU) and Dining Services will welcome Tamara Pernell of Pick Up N Go Soul Food in Waterloo as a guest chef in Mensa. The meal is free for students with a board plan or $10 per person. The menu includes catfish, mac and cheese, collard greens, and sweet potatoes. A limited number of Philly cheesesteak egg rolls, one of her restaurant's signature dishes, will be available. All are welcome!

Volunteers are needed for Science O’ Love, an annual event by Wartburg's National Science Teaching Association. NSTA works with younger kids to help get them interested in science. This Valentine's Day event, the biggest NSTA hosts each year, is a fundraiser for next year’s national conference, where the executive team will talk about the group’s research.

Wartburg Community Symphony: ‘Music Takes Flight’

This concert will feature the world premiere of Jocelyn Hagen's “Messages from Everywhere” in celebration of the symphony's 70th anniversary. The work will be a sensory experience with the symphony, Wartburg Choir, live projected digital imaging, and surround sound. The concert will also include O. Respighi's “The Birds,” featuring winners of the art competition; R. V. Williams’ “The Lark Ascending,” featuring violin soloist Dr. Steve Sang Koh; and Haydn's Symphony No. 83, “The Hen.” Tickets are available now.

Achievements and accomplishments
Dr. Scott Muntefering, the Eugene and Ruth Weidler Drape Distinguished Professor of Music Education, was elected to a three-year term on the International Board of Directors of the Historic Brass Society. The society is an international music organization dedicated to the study of brass music from early instruments to the present.
Dr. Caryn D. Riswold, professor of religion and the Mike and Marge McCoy Family Distinguished Chair in Lutheran Heritage and Mission, attended a national conference on "The Age of Roe: The Past, Present, and Future of Abortion in America" hosted by the Radcliffe Institute on Jan. 26-27 at Harvard University. This is part of a collaboration with the ELCA's Director of Gender Justice and Women's Empowerment to provide support and resources for current and future church leaders.

The Wartburg community extends its condolences to Sarah Bouska, music tour, camp, and promotion manager, on the loss of her husband, Duane, who died Feb. 3, at age 45. A meal train has been started to help the family during this time. Services are pending with Kaiser Corson Funeral Home.

Student tax forms mailed
Student W-2s for 2022 were postmarked and mailed to students’ legal/home/permanent addresses on file on Friday, Jan. 27. Student 1098-T forms for 2022 will be postmarked and similarly mailed by Tuesday, Jan. 31. Please allow 7-10 business days for the delivery of these forms. Scholarship available for experiential learning

Tony Moton, assistant professor of journalism & communication, has provided funds in celebration of his grandmother, Henrietta (Etta) Moton, for the Etta Moton Experiential Learning Fund. A scholarship of at least $500, with possible additional funds depending on availability, will be awarded annually to one or more students who are in pursuit of artistic goals – music, writing, film, and the fine arts – to advance their dreams as an artist and a scholar through an appropriate internship or experiential learning opportunity.
