Open forums set with Spiritual Life candidates

Two candidates for the position of dean of spiritual life will be on campus this week. The Rev. Kyle Barton will hold an open forum from 4-5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, in McCoy West. The Rev. Miles Hopgood will hold an open forum from 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, in McCoy East.

Win a chance to meet Tai Verdes

Ticketholders for ETK’s Large Event, Tai Verdes with opening act Running Lights, can win a chance to meet Verdes. After purchasing your ticket, follow @etk_wartburg on Instagram and tag two friends in a comment on the most recent post to be entered in the drawing. In addition, a scavenger hunt for free tickets will be held every day this week, and the first 200 people to purchase tickets will be put in a drawing to win ETK swag.

 

The ETK Large Event will take place in Levick Arena on Saturday, Oct. 8. Doors will open at 7 p.m., with Running Lights taking the stage at 8 p.m. and Tai Verdes beginning at 9 p.m. Keep checking the ETK Instagram story for more concert giveaways and to keep up to date on Large Event information.

FAFSA can now be filed for 2023-24

The 2023-24 FAFSA is now available. Every student who will receive financial aid for the 2023-24 school year should submit one. The Financial Aid Office highly recommends using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to ensure correct 2021 tax information is used. Much of the information will carry over from your 2022-23 FAFSA, but Wartburg’s code is #001896 if you need to enter it again.

 

If you’re interested in a monthly payment plan for Winter Term, please contact the Business Office. Contact the Financial Aid Office if you would like to discuss loan options.

Noah Campus Health Clinic available for appointments

Noah Campus Health Clinic is an outpatient clinic on Wartburg's campus that can meet most health needs of students, faculty, staff, and immediate family members. Medical conditions that go beyond the scope of the clinic are referred to off-campus providers. Noah Campus Health Clinic is in Suite 1392 on the lower level of The W. You can make an appointment online or call 319-352-8436 to schedule one. Same-day appointments are often available.

Madlock, Faidley receive inaugural Ubuntu Awards

President Rebecca Neiduski bestowed the first Ubuntu Awards at the September presidential forum. The inaugural award for faculty went to Dr. LeAnn Faidley, and the staff award was given to Krystal Madlock. Congratulations to both!

Cash advance, bag requests due by Oct. 14

Apply now for Heritage Tour to Germany
A generous donor has once again made it possible for the college to sponsor a German Heritage Tour, which will be June 8-18, 2023. Up to 20 faculty and staff can participate in this exciting exploration of Germany and our heritage. Everyone is encouraged to apply regardless of their role at the college. Successful applicants will be asked to pay a $500 fee and will be responsible for the cost of their passport, personal insurance, some meals, and discretionary spending. Applications are due Oct. 21.

Win prizes at Career & Internship Showcase

The fall 2022 Career & Internship Showcase will be from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, in The W’s Hall of Champions. More than 80 employers, graduate schools, and service organizations will attend. All students are encouraged to polish up their resumes, dress for success, and engage with these professionals.

 

Students who attend the Career & Internship Showcase, receive a showcase passport, and talk with at least five employers will be entered into drawings. Prizes will be an iPad, two $25 gift cards to The Wartburg Store, and two $25 gift cards Z’s Pizza & Diner. Email jo.dorrance@wartburg.edu or derek.solheim@wartburg.edu with questions.

Small-group book discussions planned through Hearthside Project

The Hearthside Project offers faculty and students the unique opportunity to connect outside the formality of the classroom by reading and discussing a book together. Students receive their books free of charge. Reading groups consist of one book leader and three students. To apply, email the leader of the book you’re interested in discussing:

Materials science researcher to speak at MCSP seminar
The first Math, Computer Science & Physics Department Seminar of the year will begin at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, in Science Center 134. Dr. Sarah Matt '12, a research scientist in the Materials Science Division at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, will speak virtually about her post-Wartburg career and her current research in a talk titled "From Wartburg Chemistry to a Career in Materials Science Research." All are invited to hear her presentation.
Submissions sought for The Castle
Wartburg College's literary magazine, The Castle, is now accepting submissions for its Winter 2023 edition. The deadline for submission is April 14, 2023. The Castle will accept graphic works, photography, and artworks of any medium as long as they are submitted electronically.
Dance Marathon to mark National Child Health Day

National Child Health Day is the first Monday of October. It is a day to show support to children struggling with illness and to their families. If you would like to donate in honor of National Child Health Day, Wartburg College Dance Marathon will raise money all day for the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital.

Review materials for references to Pathways
The Academic Resource Center would like to ask all faculty and staff to review their course and office materials to ensure any reference to Pathways has been removed. Career, vocation, and mentoring services are now available in the Student Success Center. Please avoid using the Pathways name moving forward to help prevent confusion.
Professional development slides now available

The slides from Dr. Caryn Riswold’s presentation at the September presidential forum, “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Amidst White Supremacy Culture,” are now available on the Information Center under President’s Reports.

Student Success Workshops available
The Academic Resource Center offers Student Success Workshops that take 20-30 minutes. Topics include ARC Overview, Academic Writing, Working with Groups, Time Management, Note Taking, Stress Management, and more. If you feel your students would benefit from these presentations, please email Molly Mundt or Q Richardson to set up a time.
Vogel Library publishes October newsletter

The latest edition of The Searching Squirrel, Vogel Library’s newsletter, is now available. It includes news about progress in hiring staff, a temporary closure of the archives, and an update on the reclassification of the 200s.

Weekday Chapel services
Weekday Chapel services are from 10:15 to 10:35 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in Wartburg Chapel. Chapel time is a brief opportunity to gather with students, staff, and faculty to reflect on God and faith. Mondays feature faculty and staff faith stories and blessings, Wednesdays include Holy Communion to which all are welcome, and Fridays have Senior Chapels.

Sanctuary on Wednesdays

Sanctuary is a casual service that takes place Wednesday nights. All are welcome to relax and center themselves around God’s word in the midst of their busy weeks. Service begins at 9 p.m. in the Chapel Commons, lower level, with snacks served beforehand at 8:45.

The U.S. Department of Education requires institutions receiving federal funding to provide notice regarding the availability of consumer information. The information includes general college facts and statistics, financial aid assistance, annual security report, copyright infringement, and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act policies. Faculty and staff can find the information at www.wartburg.edu/consumer-information. Contact the Financial Aid Office with questions or requests for a paper copy.
Learn more about student debt relief
You may have heard about a recent Student Debt Relief Plan that includes one-time student loan debt relief. If you have a federal loan that is still outstanding and was given to you before July 1, 2022, you might qualify. Use this informational site to get answers to your questions and prepare yourself to take action as early as next month.
Attend Oktoberfest using your meal plan
Students can use their meal plans to eat during Oktoberfest, which is from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15. You can swipe your ID to get into the event, which will count as your meal for that evening.
Wartburg archives to close Oct. 3-24
The Wartburg College Archives and the Archives of Iowa Broadcasting will be closed and inaccessible Oct. 3-24, as Kay Grisgby, the Grant Price Endowed Archivist, will be traveling internationally. If you have archival research questions or would like to view materials, please email kay.grigsby@wartburg.edu and she will address your request when she returns.
Sign up for Homecoming & Family Weekend activities

You can pick up Homecoming shirts and stickers from the Homecoming Committee, which will table outside the Mensa stairs Tuesdays and Thursdays through Oct. 6. If you have any questions, email homecoming@wartburg.edu.

Parade
Join the parade! Student organizations and local businesses can have a float in the parade at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15. You will be emailed more details when you submit your application.

Reverse tie-dye sponsorship
A new event this year will give students the opportunity to bleach dye (reverse tie-dye) T-shirts donated by student organizations and departments. If your organization or department does not have any T-shirts to donate, the Homecoming Committee is open to other ideas or activities your organization could host at this event. Register to donate shirts or participate in another way.

Career & Internship Showcase set Oct. 6

Kurtt remembrance planned Oct. 23

John and Laurel Kurtt will be honored during The Great Oktoberfest Remembrance and “Show and Tell” from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, at the Waverly Area Veterans Post. Photos, documents, memorabilia, and physical creations by John will be displayed. At 4:30 p.m., a Scripture reading and prayer will be held, followed by a few live musical numbers. In accordance with Oktoberfest tradition, German food and drink will be provided. RSVP your intentions, regrets, and memories on the John Kurtt “Tribute Wall” on the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home website. A private family graveside interment for both Laurel and John will be held at a future date.
