Volunteer Action Center to plant trees, flowers
|
The Volunteer Action Center’s annual May Day of Service will be Tuesday, May 10. Help beautify Wartburg’s campus by planting trees and flowers and get a free T-shirt (first come, first served). Sign up for either the 10 a.m. to noon or 1 to 3 p.m. shift. Be sure to wear closed-toe shoes and select your T-shirt size. The rain date is Thursday, May 12. Email vac@wartburg.edu with questions.

Colsons issue invitation to Greenwood reception
|
President Darrel Colson and Christy Colson have invited faculty and staff to join them for a reception at Greenwood on Friday, May 20. Beverages and appetizers will be served from 4 to 6 p.m. on the Greenwood Lawn, 902 12th St. NW, or in the ballrooms in the event of rain. Retirement reception planned for Ulriches
|
A retirement reception for Dick and Colleen Ulrich, both cleaning staff, is set for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, behind the reception desk in Vogel Library. The Ulriches have worked on the maintenance staff at Wartburg for 14 years and are looking forward to spending time with family and friends. Thank you for your service!

Water to Thrive plans Ethiopian dinner
|
The Water to Thrive student organization will host an Ethiopian Food Dinner at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, at the Waverly Area Veterans Post. Food will be prepared by Katar Ethiopian Restaurant in Minneapolis. Dinner is $10, and a cash bar will be available. The St. George String Quartet will provide music during the social time, where you can talk to Wartburg student-athletes involved in the recent Shorten the Walk event. Register online; a limited number of tickets will be available at the door. All proceeds will go to the installation of water wells in East Africa.

RSVP for screening, discussion on disabilities
|
Join a summit on disability issues at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, in the ballrooms, hosted by the Slife Institute for Social Work Consultation, Research & Training. Attendees will learn more about the Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council, watch a free screening of “Intelligent Lives,” and participate in tabling sessions and a discussion with area providers and social work students. Council members will also be available for informal conversation and want to hear about the needs of the community. Please RSVP by May 15; light refreshments will be served.

ETK creative exhibition planned May 14
|
ETK is sponsoring a new event, Step Out, at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 14, in the ballrooms. There will be an exhibition, screenings, performances, and some finger foods. If you would like to display your work or showcase your creative medium, sign up to join the exhibition.

Educational services director to speak about tech challenges
|
Katie Johnston, the director of educational services for the Waverly-Shell Rock School District, will speak to the American Association of University Women at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 19. Her presentation, “Waverly-Shell Rock Technology, Teaching, and Distance Learning: Insights and Challenges” will discuss the current state and challenges of education technology. The event is in Room 134 of the Science Center and is open to all. A casual social time will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Soccer tournament set for May 13
|
The African Representative Council will host the Wartburg World Cup soccer tournament at 7 p.m. Friday, May 13, at the lacrosse field. A meal with drink will be offered for $5. People of all skill levels and all genders are encouraged to sign up.

Star in a short film this May Term
|
Knight Vision Films will hold auditions for five short films from 6 to 10 p.m. Monday, May 9, and Tuesday, May 10. Those interested should come to the lobby of the McElroy Center when they are available and will be directed from there. Everyone — students, faculty, staff, and community members — are welcome to audition; no experience is needed.

Hymn festival set at Wartburg Chapel
|
Composer Robert A. Hobby will lead a hymn festival, “From Generation to Generation: Hymns for Life’s Journey,” at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 15, in the Wartburg Chapel. Hobby is a renowned composer, clinician, and church musician who serves as director of music at Trinity English Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, Ind. He has more than 150 compositions in print and has several hymns in the ELW and new All Creation Sings supplement.

Master's degree program switches to fall start
|
Applications are still open for the Master of Arts in Leadership program as it transitions to a fall start. Benefits-eligible employees, their spouses, and their children are now eligible for a 20 percent discount on tuition. The employee must remain at Wartburg while the discount is received. Please note this is a taxable benefit for the employee if the recipient is not a dependent for tax purposes.
