Study Away photo contest winners

Votes have been counted, and the Study Away Photo Contest winners have been selected! First place goes to Anna Mugan for “Gondola in Venice,” second place (and online popular choice winner) to Jared Feigenbaum for “Easter in Wilmington,” and third place to Will Goettl for “Alpine Traume.” Keep watch in November for the installation of the selected winning entries. Tent of Nations director to speak Friday

Daoud Nassar, a Palestinian Christian farmer and director of the Tent of Nations, will speak on campus Friday, Nov. 8, 5-7 p.m., in the Hagemann Castle Room in Saemann Student Center. Nassar will share his story, titled “We Refuse to be Enemies,” about pursuing peace through non-violent action. He will also speak at Weekday Chapel at 10:15 a.m. Friday. The Tent of Nations, located on the Nassar family’s 100-acre farm and orchard outside of Bethlehem in the West Bank, has become an international peace center attracting thousands of visitors annually. St. Elizabeth Week events

In honor of St. Elizabeth, who devoted her life to service, the campus community is invited to spend Nov. 11-20 devoting our time and efforts to service. We are raising money for the Wartburg College Food Pantry and for a local nonprofit organization through several events, which are aimed toward educating ourselves on important issues such as hunger and service. We also invite you to nominate one or more current students with a commitment to service in, with, and for the community, either for the St. Elizabeth Award for Service and/or the Pastor Larry Trachte Award for Service. Nominations will be accepted until Friday, Nov. 15, at 5 p.m. Award recipients will be recognized during the chapel service on Wednesday, Nov. 20. Decorate a tree for Festival of Trees

The annual Wartburg-Waverly Festival of Trees will brighten the halls of Wartburg’s Classroom Technology Center Dec. 4-17. If your office, academic department, or group/organization would like to decorate a Christmas tree to display, please sign up by Friday, Nov. 22. A partnership between the college and Waverly Chamber of Commerce, the festival is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and attracts more than 5,000 guests each year. There is no entry fee or admission charge.

Kleinfeld Lecture welcomes White House journalist

Alexandra von Nahmen, a German political journalist, will be the featured speaker at the annual Kleinfeld Lecture in German History, Culture and Politics at 4:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in McCaskey Lyceum. Von Nahmen’s lecture, “The Battle for the White House: A European View on the U.S. Presidential Election,” will draw from her experiences as the Washington bureau chief for Deutsche Welle, Germany’s international broadcaster. She has covered U.S. national and international politics since 2017 as a member of the White House Correspondents’ Association. She is also president of the White House Foreign Correspondents’ Group.

VAC blood drive Nov. 19

VAC will hold a blood drive on Tuesday, Nov. 19, in partnership with Red Cross from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Chapel Commons. Your 10 minutes in the donation chair matters to your community! Ask your friends, colleagues, and loved ones to donate with you; cookies and the feel-good buzz of saving up to four lives, are waiting for you. Sign up for a time to donate on this link. Winter Break and Tour Week leader applications are now open and will close on Sunday, Nov. 17. We also have our College Organization applications for Winter and Tour Week break open as well. If you are part of a student org or sports team and want to do an organization service trip, apply with our link. MCSP Seminar

The next Math, Computer Science & Physics (MCSP) Department Seminar will be held Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 11:30 a.m., room 134 Science Center. Two Wartburg students will speak about their summer internship experiences. Emily Leonhart ’19 will present "A Wicked Smaht Summer Internship" about her experiences with the Global Atlantic Financial Group in Boston. Ally Limke '20 will present "An Intern's Experience with Agile" about her internship at Cartegraph in Dubuque. All are invited; refreshments will be provided.

Activist, pastor and author Rev. Lenny Duncan on campus Nov. 18

The Rev. Lenny Duncan, an activist, Lutheran pastor, and the author of the newly released book Dear Church: A Love Letter from a Black Preacher to the Whitest Denomination in the U.S., will visit Wartburg on Monday, Nov. 18, as part of his nationwide book tour. His public talk will be titled "Dear (College of the) Church." He will speak in weekday chapel Nov. 18, have lunch with students, visit classes, and have a public book-talk that evening at 7 p.m. in McCaskey Lyceum, with a book-signing and reception to follow in the Castle Room. All are welcome. Lenny is an unlikely pastor, formerly incarcerated and homeless, who now serves the church and world at Jehu's Table in Brooklyn, N.Y., as well as through the Emmaus Collective, a network of mainline churches that have agreed to enter into meaningful anti-racist work. In his book, he argues "it is time for the church to rise up, dust itself off, and take on forces of this world that act against God: whiteness, misogyny, nationalism, homophobia, and economic injustice."

Phil & Lit Society

The Wartburg Phil­osophical and Literary Society will meet Friday, Nov. 8, at 4 p.m. in McCoy West of Seamann Student Center. Faculty, staff, students and community members are encouraged to attend. The speaker is Dr. David McCullough, professor of biology and the Dr. Myrle Burk and Vera Burke Endowed Chair in Environmental and Interdisciplinary Studies, who will present “Climate Changed: There is no Planet B, Reflections on the 55th Nobel Conference: Climate Changed — Facing our Future.”

Interfaith Prayer Room

As an expression of Christian hospitality, a new Interfaith Prayer Room has been established in the lower level of the Wartburg Chapel, as we welcome students, faculty and staff of all faith and non-faith traditions. The room is available for all to use for worship and meditation.

Catholic Mass on campus

AllCatholic Knights will hold on campus mass on Thursday, Nov. 7, at 8 p.m. in the Wartburg Chapel.

Weekday Chapel schedule

All are welcome at Weekday Chapel services from 10:15 to 10:35 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in the Wartburg Chapel. Chapel time is a brief opportunity to gather with students, staff, and faculty to reflect on God and faith. Interfaith chapels will be held the last Wednesday of each month during the semester.
