NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

Convocation features alumna — International humanitarian law expert Laura Olson ’92 will speak about her experiences in international law and work to protect persons from the effects of armed conflict, Tuesday, Feb. 17, 11:30 a.m., in Neumann Auditorium. Olson will highlight her 10 years as a legal adviser to the International Committee of the Red Cross and give an overview of International Humanitarian Law, including how this law protects persons, such as prisoners of war, during armed conflict and contemporary challenges the law faces. A 2013 recipient of the Wartburg College Alumni Citation, Olson is acting director of the Programs Branch of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. 


Health update regarding employee 
— Susan Lenius, Counseling Services office coordinator and Security Office parking coordinator, was admitted to Iowa City Hospitals and Clinics earlier this week. She would like to thank everyone for their support and prayers throughout her hospital stay and let everyone know she will be transferred to the acute rehab unit at Allen Hospital later this week


More winter woes
— To conserve heat the south doors to Old Main will be closed today, Feb. 5, and Friday, Feb. 6. Please use the north entrance.

'Best of the Best' concert
 — The Wartburg Community Symphony will perform alongside the Valley High School Chamber Orchestra in the Meistersinger Honor Orchestra Festival's "Best of the Best" concert Saturday, Feb. 14, 7:30 p.m., in Neumann Auditorium. Under the direction of  Dr. Daniel Kaplunas, the orchestras will perform crowd-pleasing numbers, including two with Dr. Simon Estes, distinguished professor and artist in residence. A reception will follow. Tickets, $16.50 for adults and $6.50 for students, can be purchased at wartburg.edu/symphony, at the Ticket Office in Saemann Student Center, or at the door starting at 6:45 p.m. For more information, call 352-8200.


Candlelight vigil
— SAFE will host a candlelight vigil and conversation Tuesday, Feb. 10, 7 p.m., in Wartburg Chapel. Students Jacob Martin, Alex Shockley, and Paris White will speak on their battles with mental illness and its effects. Conversation will follow in the Chapel Commons. Those interested in sharing their story should email SAFE@wartburg.edu. The event is dedicated to the lives lost to suicide and those suffering.


Wellness challenge coming
— Wartburg employees are again invited to participate in the Waverly Area Partnership for Healthy Living Wellness Challenge. Challenges involve simple physical activity, nutrition, and stress reduction. The first challenge of 2015 is the daily mile. Participants must log the number of miles they walk, jog, run, or move on an elliptical each day between Feb. 9 and Feb. 27. V-Day silent auction
— The V-Day Campaign seeks donated items for a silent auction to be held Monday, Feb. 9 through Saturday, Feb. 14 by McCaskey Lyceum. To donate items or services, please email Veronica Paine ’15 at veronica.paine@wartburg.edu.


Keep on Learning 
— A compilation of Charlie Chaplin’s career will be featured in the Keep on Learning community education series beginning today, Feb. 5, 9:30-11:30 a.m., in the Heritage Room of Saemann Student Center. Scott Cawelti, University of Northern Iowa professor emeritus, will discuss Chaplin’s comic genius, which entranced three generations of filmgoers and bridged the silent and sound eras of film. Classes continue Feb. 12, 19, and 26. Coffee will be served at 9 a.m. The first class of each session is free; a $30 fee due at the second class covers the rest of the course. For more information, email alumni@wartburg.edu or visit www.wartburg.edu/kol


Segregation simulation
— Promote equal rights during Black History Month through this week's campuswide segregation simulation. Signs will direct participating students to bathrooms, water fountains, and more that can or cannot be used based on one’s eye color. Faculty involvement is key to the simulation; resources are available for bringing the simulation to the classroom.  — Our outstanding students and organizations will be recognized at the Student Leadership & Service Awards Saturday, March 14. Nominations are due Friday, Feb. 6. Phil and Lit
— The Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society will meet Friday, Feb. 6, 4 p.m., in McCoy West of Saemann Student Center. Dr. Keith McClung, professor of biology, will present The Rational Treatment of Cancer.

Dance Marathon Night at the Waterloo Black Hawks — Join Wartburg College Dance Marathon Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Waterloo Black Hawks game. Tickets are $10, with $3 going to WCDM. Ticket orders and payment are due to the Business Office today, Feb. 5. Email wcdm@wartburg.edu for an order form. 


Festival finale
— Enjoy the Meistersinger Honor Band Festival finale concert Sunday, Feb. 8, 2:15 p.m., in Neumann Auditorium. The free concert will begin with music by Wartburg’s Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Bands. The festival honor bands, featuring more than 200 students from five states, will then perform after a weekend of rehearsals.

 – The date for the annual staff retreat has been set. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 21, and look for more information to be provided soon. 


Notice regarding Wellmark coverage
— An error in Wellmark's claims-processing system is causing members on the Blue Advantage MCO plan through Wartburg to be billed more than they should be for office visits since Jan. 1, 2015. No action is required of those billed for office visits; Wellmark will reprocess affected claims once the issue is corrected. Questions can be directed to the Human Resources & Payroll Office at 319-352-8521 or amy.wilson@wartburg.edu.


Graduate Status Report
 — The Enrollment Management Office has released the Class of 2013-14 Graduate Status Report, which includes responses from 366 of 383 graduates from December 2013, May 2014, and August 2014. Click here for the full report. 

  • The placement rate was 97 percent: 62 percent reported being employed full-time, 21 percent were continuing their education, 8 percent were employed part-time, 4 percent were volunteering, and 2 percent were pursuing other options or not in the job market.  Three percent were seeking employment or applying to graduate/professional school.
  • Seventy-two percent of Iowa residents remained in Iowa, as did 27 percent of residents of other states and 33 percent of international students.
  • The top five employers of the class, in order, are Rockwell Collins, John Deere, Hormel Foods, Target Corporation, and Mayo Clinic.
