Löhe and The Residence applications — Enjoy campus life in a suite-style unit next year. Applications for Löhe Hall and The Residence are being accepted through Wednesday, Feb. 25. Löhe Hall residents develop a learning project with their roommates to educate the Wartburg community. Suites are available for one, three, four, six, or eight occupants. The Residence is a service-learning community with one- or eight-person suites. Residents develop a service project to fulfill a need in the community. Housing sign-up — Housing cards for 2015-16 will be available Monday, March 2. Wartburg has eliminated the $200 deposit formerly required for participation in the housing lottery. Informational meetings regarding the sign-up process will be 8 p.m. Monday, March 16, in the Clinton Hall lounge; Tuesday, March 17, in the Centennial Hall lounge; and Thursday, March 19, in McCoy West of Saemann Student Center. Convocation features alumna — International humanitarian law expert Laura Olson ’92 will speak about her experiences in international law and work to protect persons from the effects of armed conflict, Tuesday, Feb. 17, 11:30 a.m., in Neumann Auditorium. Olson will highlight her 10 years as a legal adviser to the International Committee of the Red Cross and give an overview of International Humanitarian Law, including how this law protects persons, such as prisoners of war, during armed conflict and contemporary challenges the law faces. A 2013 recipient of the Wartburg College Alumni Citation, Olson is acting director of the Programs Branch of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties.
More winter woes — To conserve heat the south doors to Old Main will be closed today, Feb. 5, and Friday, Feb. 6. Please use the north entrance.
Evening mass — Catholic Mass will be held on campus today, Feb. 5, 9 p.m., in Wartburg Chapel. All are welcome!
'Best of the Best' concert — The Wartburg Community Symphony will perform alongside the Valley High School Chamber Orchestra in the Meistersinger Honor Orchestra Festival's "Best of the Best" concert Saturday, Feb. 14, 7:30 p.m., in Neumann Auditorium. Under the direction of Dr. Daniel Kaplunas, the orchestras will perform crowd-pleasing numbers, including two with Dr. Simon Estes, distinguished professor and artist in residence. A reception will follow. Admission is free for students with identification. For more information, call 352-8200.
Candlelight vigil — SAFE will host a candlelight vigil and conversation Tuesday, Feb. 10, 7 p.m., in Wartburg Chapel. Students Jacob Martin, Alex Shockley, and Paris White will speak on their battles with mental illness and its effects. Conversation will follow in the Chapel Commons. Those interested in sharing their story should email SAFE@wartburg.edu. The event is dedicated to the lives lost to suicide and those suffering.
V-Day silent auction — The V-Day Campaign seeks donated items for a silent auction to be held Monday, Feb. 9 through Saturday, Feb. 14 by McCaskey Lyceum. To donate items or services, please email Veronica Paine ’15 at veronica.paine@wartburg.edu.
Leadership and service awards — Visit wartburg.edu/studentlife by Friday, Feb. 6, to nominate your peers, student organizations, and advisers for one of many service and leadership awards bestowed by the college. Descriptions and criteria of the awards are on the nomination site. Winners will be recognized at the Student Leadership & Service Awards Saturday, March 14. BSU hosts Trivia Night — Win prizes while testing your knowledge of entertainment, history, geography, and more in relation to Black History Month as Black Student Union hosts Trivia Night tonight, Feb. 5, 8 p.m., in Luther Hall 330. Speaking of trivia, did you know that Hiram Rhodes Revels was the first African American Senator ever elected in the United States? He represented the state of Mississippi from February 1870 to March 1871. Learn more fun facts at Trivia Night!
Festival finale — Enjoy the Meistersinger Honor Band Festival finale concert Sunday, Feb. 8, 2:15 p.m., in Neumann Auditorium. The free concert will begin with music by Wartburg’s Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Bands. The festival honor bands, featuring more than 200 students from five states, will then perform after a weekend of rehearsals.
Segregation simulation— Promote equal rights during Black History Month through this week's campuswide segregation simulation. Signs will direct participating students to bathrooms, water fountains, and more that can or cannot be used based on one’s eye color. Literary symposium planned — The Striking Languages: Language in Research, Expression, and the Professional World literary symposium will present the roundtable discussion Language Matters: Language, Professional Advantage, and Empowerment for Global Engagement today, Feb. 5, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., in Luther Hall 330.
Dance Marathon Night at the Waterloo Black Hawks — Join Wartburg College Dance Marathon Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Waterloo Black Hawks game. Tickets are $10, with $3 going to WCDM. Ticket orders and payment are due to the Business Office today, Feb. 5. Email wcdm@wartburg.edu for an order form.

Get a taste of the Master's — The W, with the help of USA-certified swim coach Janet McCullough, is hosting a new Master's Swim Clinic Sunday, Feb. 15, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Participants will learn new in- and out-of-water exercises and complete a video review with feedback for improved efficiency, endurance, and speed. “Tri" your hardest — The W is hosting a 12-week Triathlon Training class starting Wednesday, Feb. 11. USA Triathlon certified coach Carrie Tysdahl will teach the class focusing on run form, cycling powers, transitions, swim techniques, and more. The cost is $87 for members.
