May 1, 2017
Wartburg Alert test

The emergency notification system for Wartburg College, Wartburg Alert, will be tested around noon Thursday, May 4. Wartburg Alert is tested, at minimum, once per term. Alerts aren’t automatically sent. You have to register your phone in order to receive alerts. There is no charge for registering, and you may register up to two numbers for text notification and two numbers for voice phones. You are strongly encouraged to register an SMS number to receive a text, as it is the quickest and most reliable means of notification. To register, log into InfoCenter. Then go to the “Offices” drop-down menu and select “Parking & Safety.” Under “Important Resources," click on “Wartburg Alert.” If you have problems registering, stop by the Security Office between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. To verify if you are registered before May 4, send an email to campus.security@wartburg.edu, and we will confirm your registration.

Student shuttles at end of year
End-of-the-year shuttles will be running to various area airports and bus stations Friday, May 26. Please visit www.wartburg.edu/shuttle for details about routes, times, and pricing. The deadline to sign up for the shuttle is Tuesday, May 16. Also, if you are planning your return trip to Wartburg for fall 2017, contact Jennifer in Student Life for the beginning-of-the-year shuttle schedule.
Lunch & Play at The Wartburg Store
Feeling bored on your lunch break? Drop by The Wartburg Store to learn our most popular two-player board games! We’ll host our Lunch & Play every Tuesday and Thursday during May Term, noon-1 p.m.
Treats from Dan the Dean
Dan Kittle, dean of students, will hand out mini cool cookies on RA rounds through The Complex and Knights Village starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, with RA Caleb Davidson. On-campus students who’d like Dean Kittle to bring over a cook cookie that night can send a tweet to @DanTheDean (don’t forget to include your campus address), even if you’re not on the RA rounds route!
Game Knights
Invite a friend to Game Knights during May Term. We will play EVERY Thursday, 7-10 p.m., in the McCoy rooms. Classic games like Catan, Ticket to Ride, and Dominion are regularly played as well as new favorites like Codenames, Libertalia, Dead of Winter, and more. Hosted by The Wartburg Store.
Film crew on campus
A Los Angeles-based independent film crew will be on campus through mid-May to produce a faith-based film inspired by the story of Mike Jensen ’96, former lecturer in music and voice instructor at Wartburg, who is battling brain cancer. The project is led by alumnus Brian Ide ’96 and will involve many students. Please be aware the college is supporting this endeavor, and we encourage the campus to be as hospitable as possible. Thank you for your patience with this project.
Posekany Literacy Award winner announced
Gabrielle Calease Fox, a fourth-year English major from Waverly, has received the Leonard and Carol Posekany Literacy Award. The award provides funding for Calease Fox to attend the Iowa Reading Association ESEA Title 1 Conference in Ames, June 27-28. These literacy awards are available through the generosity of Leonard and Carol Posekany, parents of Department of Education emeritae faculty Dr. Susan Sherwood and Dr. Peggy Pruisner.
Pay rate increases for Dining Service and Operations & Maintenance student employees
Effective with June 2017 work hours, Dining Service and Operations & Maintenance college student employees will receive pay rate increases. The pay rate for student assistants will be $8.25/hour (current base pay of $7.50), and the pay rate for student managers will be $9.00/hour (current base pay of $8.30). This will replace the current pay grid in which students receive pay increases for every 200 hours worked in these departments. Anyone presently receiving more than the new pay rate due to the increase for each 200 hours worked will be grandfathered in at their present pay. Office positions in these departments will remain exempt from receiving the pay increases.

The pay increases are intended to help recruit and retain student employees in both departments and, therefore, aid in maintaining quality customer service and daily operations. For more information, please contact Margaret Empie, assistant vice president of dining and retail services, or Keith Strand, director of general maintenance and cleaning.

Student employee wages
Effective June 1, the Wartburg College Student Employment program will require all student employees to deposit their wages directly into their bank account, set up a Student Payroll Deduction Agreement to have wages applied to their tuition account, or arrange a combination of these two options. This change is part of the college’s expense-reduction efforts as well as a way in which we can adapt more sustainable practices.
Student employment forms
Direct deposit forms and Student Payroll Deduction Agreements can be picked up in the Student Employment Office, Luther Hall 212, or found on our website. Completed forms should be submitted to the Student Employment Office by their respective deadlines. Questions regarding this change can be directed to Abbie Raum, student employment coordinator, studentemployment@wartburg.edu or 319-352-8350.
