HOMECOMING ANNOUNCEMENTS
Parade student section — The first 25 students to stop by the student section (near the Wartburg College sign on Bremer Avenue) will receive a special Wartburg gift pack. All students are encouraged to watch the parade, starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15. Contact homecoming@wartburg.edu with any questions.

Renaissance Faire — Make sure you grab something to eat at the Renaissance Faire, 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, on the Campus Mall. Check out some of our new food vendors, crafts, and entertainment sponsored by Wartburg student organizations, local nonprofits, and vendors.

McCoy Living and Learning Center dedication Friday – Save the date for the dedication ceremony for the McCoy Living and Learning Center and Clinton Hall: Friday, Oct. 14, at 3:30 p.m. Join the celebration on Clinton Field and mark this milestone for Wartburg!

Wartburg Oktoberfest — Oktoberfest will be Saturday, Oct. 15, 4-6:30 p.m. on the Campus Mall. For students who live on campus, make sure to save a meal from your meal plan if you would like to eat dinner during Oktoberfest; Mensa will not be open during this time. The meal will include beverages, food, and fellowship with current, future, and past Knights. For students without a meal plan, and for family, friends and faculty, make sure to pre-register! Pre-registered tickets are discounted and give you access to the “fastpass” line at the event. Click here to see a map detailing the setup. Jane Lindner open house — Join us in celebrating the 24-year career of Jane Lindner, who recently retired as office coordinator for the Alumni & Parent Relations and Annual Giving Office, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, in The W’s Hall of Fame Room. A short program will begin at 11:30 a.m., and light refreshments will be served. Lindner also is serving as the 2016 Homecoming & Family Weekend parade grand marshal. NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS 

Free Cool Cookies at focus group — The German Institute is conducting focus groups to find more effective ways to inform students about the significance of a German experience for students’ professional and personal lives. Six to 12 student volunteers are needed for each of the following sessions:
• Sunday, Oct. 23, 7-8:30 p.m., McCoy East
• Sunday, Oct. 30, 7-8:30 p.m., McCoy East
All participants will receive free Cool Cookies! To participate, contact Dr. Dan Walther by Monday, Oct. 17, and let him know which session you plan to attend. 

Share your writing, artwork, photography — Did you know there is a place for students to have their photography, art, and all types of writing published? Wartburg’s English department joins with a staff of students every year to publish two volumes of Wartburg’s own literary and arts magazine, The Castle, and submissions are now being accepted! Send your PDF or Word document tocastle@wartburg.edu by Nov. 1. If you're interested in having a say in which pieces make it into the magazine, send an email to the address above and we will add you to our list. Fire safety inspections — Fire safety inspections were conducted at Wartburg May 10-11 and 17, with the intent to increase the fire safety of our campus buildings. We are in the process of addressing the few concerns outlined in the report. There were a few common safety concerns in several buildings, and we want to make sure everyone on campus understands these concerns and will work together to keep our campus safe. Those concerns can be found at this link. In each section, the fire code reference is listed first, followed by the response required from the campus community. If you have any questions, please contactScott Sharar, director of plant operations. If you would like to view the complete inspection report, along with our compliance responses, please make an appointment at the Physical Plant.

Clean t-shirts needed — The Sustainability Office is collecting clean t-shirts, free of stains, for a Renaissance Faire activity. T-shirts can be delivered to the Sustainability Office, in the basement of Old Main, or to the Physical Plant by Wednesday, Oct. 12. 

Love Your Melon hats — The Wartburg College chapter of Love Your Melon will be selling hats at the Renaissance Faire on Saturday, Oct. 15. This is the first opportunity of the year to purchase hats on campus. Each hat is $30 and for every hat purchased, one is given to a child fighting cancer. Hats can also be purchased online and credited to the Wartburg chapter at checkout.

Track and Field Rummage Sale — The Wartburg Track and Field Rummage Sale will be Friday, Oct. 14, 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m., in The W’s Canfield Strength and Conditioning Room. All past or used items must go: miscellaneous t-shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants, hats, etc. Cash or check only. First come, first served. 

STEM outreach student organization — Are you interested in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) field? Do you want to work with and inspire grade-school kids? A new student organization is being established on campus to further K-12 STEM outreach in Waverly and the surrounding area. Activities will include organizing science activities and events for kids, visiting schools to help with science education, and performing science demos. If you are interested in hearing more, there will be an informational meeting Monday, Oct. 17, 8 p.m., in SC 245. If you have any questions, contact madalynn.mckelvey@wartburg.edu

The Missouri Approach — Donald Pokorny, principal assistant of the Missouri Division of Youth Services, and his colleague Sonja Williams will be giving a presentation on Missouri’s uniquely successful approach to juvenile justice Wednesday, Oct. 19, 7 p.m., in McCaskey Lyceum. Students, faculty, staff, and community members will have the opportunity to learn about trending issues in juvenile justice and the effective components of rehabilitation in the Missouri system. Spend May Term in India — Consider travel this May Term to India. The course is a three-week immersion in India around and near the ancient city of Mysore with exploration of India’s history, health sector, women's empowerment, and the economy. Thank you from the Center for Community Engagement — All of us in the CCE/Student Life Office would like to express our thanks to the hundreds of students, faculty, and staff who stepped up and answered the call to serve their community during the flooding in Waverly. Wartburg College led the way in pre-flood efforts and assisted on Monday, Sept. 26, with Bremer County damage and needs assessment data collection. Notice from the Business Office — Students with an account balance greater than $1,000 must contact the Business Office (Luther Hall 212, 352-8411) or Financial Aid Office (Luther Hall 212, 352-8262) as soon as possible to discuss payment and/or loan options. Students failing to pay their account balance in full or below $1,000 by Thursday, Nov. 10, may have their Winter Term registration cancelled by Enrollment Management. Those applying student employment wages to their account and who feel their balance will be below $1,000 by the November student payroll should inform the Business Office. Those signed up for the Monthly Tuition Payment Plan and current with payments can disregard this notice.

May Term award letters — The Financial Aid Office will be sending out May Term award letters before Fall Break. All students enrolled in a May Term class who are going on a trip will be sent a letter to their campus boxes. Please contact the Financial Aid Office with questions. 

Outfly event sign-up — Anyone interested in doing the sand volleyball tournament (3 p.m.) or the Wartburg Traditions Amazing Race (11 a.m.) taking place on Outfly can fill out our online form. For more information about the sand volleyball tournament contact Hannah Creed, and for details about the Amazing Race contact Tony Smith.

Faith and life groups — Faith and life groups are opportunities for students to share fellowship with other believers. There are multiple groups meeting at different times, places, and locations on campus. Each group has its own flavor and is led by either a student or one of the campus pastors. Listed below is the group information. Feel free to sign up, or just show up to check it out.

St. Elizabeth service opportunity — Are you interested in being part of something bigger than yourself? St. Elizabeth Week is coming up in November, and we are looking for volunteers to be a part of the St. Elizabeth Planning Committee. If you are interested in serving in this way, please email the Volunteer Action Center at vac@wartburg.edu

Honor Council openings — The Honor Council is seeking two first-year students, one third-year student, and one fourth-year student to fill openings. The council is a board of students who deliberate cases of academic dishonesty presented by professors and students. If accepted, you will be a member until you graduate. Please email honorcouncil@wartburg.edu with questions or to apply.

Need a ride to catch a bus or flight for break? Students can book a seat on the new Wartburg Shuttle, which transports students to and from regional airports and bus stations for most academic breaks during the year. Shuttle seats can be reserved anytime, but registration for each shuttle closes 30 days before the date of shuttle travel. The deadline to reserve a seat for Thanksgiving Break is Oct. 24, and stops will be at the Waterloo bus station, Waterloo Airport (ALO), Eastern Iowa Airport near Cedar Rapids (CID), and Iowa City Megabus station. Go to www.wartburg.edu/shuttle to see a detailed schedule of locations, dates and times for the whole year and to reserve your seat.

Board of Regents cookbook — The Wartburg College Board of Regents, past and present, along with their spouses, have shared their favorite recipes for a cookbook,Best of the Knight's Kitchen. Stop by our table at the Renaissance Faire during Homecoming & Family Weekend to purchase your cookbooks. Cost is $20 each, and proceeds are dedicated to support small, unfunded campus projects. Cookbooks also will be available in The Wartburg Store after Homecoming.
