Cindy Carlson retirement reception — Please join us as we celebrate Cindy Carlson’s retirement from the Office of the President and her 17 years of dedicated service to Wartburg College. A reception will be Friday, Sept. 23, 2:30-4 p.m., in the Hagemann Castle Room in Saemann Student Center. A short program will take place at 3 p.m.


NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

Flu shots available — Flu shots will be available Oct. 11-12, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., in McCoy West in the Saemann Student Center. Shots are free for employees and spouses on the Wartburg health insurance plan. Those who are not covered by Wartburg insurance can pay out of pocket or check with their insurance carrier. Please contact Lisa Trees, Human Resources & Payroll assistant, and indicate which day you plan to attend. Note: For the 2016-17 season, the CDC recommends use of the flu shot (inactivated influenza vaccine or IIV) and the recombinant influenza vaccine (RIV). The nasal spray flu vaccine (live attenuated influenza vaccine or LAIV) should not be used during 2016-17. For this reason, Wellmark will not cover the nasal spray vaccine. 

TIAA-CREF representative to visit campus — We welcome Cindy Webb as our new TIAA-CREF representative (Chuck Freeman has been assigned to other colleges and universities). Cindy will be on campus Sept. 21 and 22 to discuss your personal financial situation on a confidential basis, including how to pursue your financial goals by investing in financial products such as mutual funds, brokerage, life insurance, and annuities. Space is limited; sign up for a time at www.tiaa-cref.org/schedulenow. Cindy’s schedule is as follows:

  • Wednesday, Sept. 21, 9:45 a.m.-3:30 p.m., McCoy East, Saemann Student Center

Call for papers for MUCH — Submissions are needed for MUCH, the Midwest Undergraduate Conference in Humanities (co-founded at Wartburg), which will be held at Central College on Saturday, Nov. 12. Even if you are not in the Humanities, your IS, ID, or other classes may have led to interdisciplinary research that would be a good fit. Zak Montgomery, associate professor of Spanish, will be requesting funds for students and participating faculty, so please contact him if you plan to attend with your students. Questions also can be directed to him. Plans are to rent a van and drive down to the conference for the day. 

Join Wartburg’s sustainability team — Are you interested in joining Wartburg’s sustainability committee, the Energy and Environmental Sustainability Initiative? We are seeking members to join the EESI team who will advocate for sustainable practices in your area, serve as a resource for your department, and represent sustainability on campus. We meet monthly to discuss the challenges and opportunities of advancing sustainability at Wartburg College. Sustainability movie to supplement curriculum — For Campus Sustainability Days, the Sustainability Office is looking to purchase rights to an education movie showing. We have four to choose from and would like feedback in case any of them would supplement your curriculum, as they all address a different part of sustainability. If you would be open to encouraging students to attend a movie for class, please go to this survey to view the options and provide feedback. 

Consumer information — The U.S. Department of Education requires institutions receiving federal funding to provide notice regarding the availability of consumer information and how to register to vote. The information includes general college facts and statistics, financial aid assistance annual security report, copyright infringement, and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act policies. Give blood — The Volunteer Action Center and the American Red Cross will host a blood drive Thursday, Sept. 22, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., in Chapel Commons. Sign up online to donate or contact the VAC at vac@wartburg.edu to volunteer your time.  

Phil and Lit – The next meeting of the Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society is 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, in McCoy West in the Saemann Student Center. Dr. Kathryn Kleinhans, professor of religion, Dr. Tamara Faux, professor of social work, and Dr. Vicki Edelnant, senior lecturer in inquiry studies, will present “A Little Knight Reading: Why You Should Care What the Class of 2020 Is Reading (I Am Malala).” These  faculty members will discuss how they are using the autobiography of 2014 Nobel Peace Prize recipient Malala Yousafzai in their IS 101 and Scholars 101 classes.

Donate your gently used t-shirts — The Sustainability Department is collecting donations of clean t-shirts (please no tears or stains), adult and youth sizes, to be used for a Renaissance Faire activity. Donations can be dropped off in the Sustainability Office in the basement of Old Main or at the Physical Plant before Monday, Oct. 10. 

Math Lab and SI courses — Math Lab is open Sunday through Thursday, 7-10 p.m., in Vogel Library Classroom 1. The Math Lab provides a comfortable place for students to receive assistance in specific courses taught through the Wartburg Math, Computer Science, and Physics departments. For details and to see a list of supported courses, click here. KnightVision sets schedule — A newly created KnightVision executive committee, representing athletics, worship, music, institutional events, and the Department of Journalism & Communication, has set the live streaming schedule for the 2016-17 academic year. Constitution Day panel — The college will commemorate Constitution Day with a panel discussion Tuesday, Sept. 20. The panel, which will focus its discussion on voter registration, will begin at 11:30 a.m. in McCaskey Lyceum in Saemann Student Center. The event is free and open to the public. The event precedes Voter Registration Day, an on-campus event set for Tuesday, Sept. 27, sponsored by Wartburg’s Student Senate. Click here for details. 

Waverly Oktoberfest — Wartburg is the Amphitheater Stage sponsor for the first Waverly Oktoberfest on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 23-24, in Kohlmann Park. Inspired by Waverly’s German heritage, the community event will feature two music venues, food and beverage gardens, a family fun zone, and activities for all ages. Individuals can support this new event by becoming a “founding member” or volunteering during the event (email volunteer@waverlyoktoberfest.com). Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the gate or online at www.waverlyoktoberfest.com. Details also can be found on the Oktoberfest Facebook page.

Early Alert system — As we begin Fall Term, remember that our Early Alert system is a quick way to share your concern via the Info Center. Students who receive feedback on their academic performance within the first two weeks of the term are more likely to turn things around if necessary. To submit an Early Alert, go to info.wartburg.edu. After logging in, click on the “Applications” tab and select “Early Alert.” Complete the form and submit. You will receive notices as your alert moves through the system. A concern can be regarding:

  • Academic performance (attendance, work submission, failed exam, etc.)
  • Physical & mental well-being
  • Financial situation (can’t afford textbooks, calculator etc.)
  • Social network
  • Anything else that prevents the student from thriving

Please return your service-learning survey — The Center for Community Engagement is responsible for tracking the service and service-learning that occurs in Wartburg College curriculum and co-curricular activities. The data are used for assessment and are included in our annual application for the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll and the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification. It is vital to receive community engagement data from our faculty to ensure ethical reporting. Please turn in the surveys provided to you during the faculty workshops. Representative needed for Retirement Plan Advisory Group — Human Resources & Payroll is looking for one faculty or staff member who participates in the retirement plan to be a representative of the Retirement Plan Advisory Group. This group meets two times a year in conjunction with the Board of Regents meetings (October and May) and on an as-needed basis. The group, along with the Retirement Plan Subcommittee of the board, participates in an annual Business Plan Review and Investment Review presented by our retirement vendor, TIAA-CREF. Current members of this advisory group are Kim Folkers, Jeff Keen, and Tom Hubbard. Please contact Human Resources & Payroll if you would like to become a part of this group.   

Learn mindfulness skills — Take part in a faculty/staff version of Koru, a four-session workshop on mindfulness and meditation skills for stress management. Sessions will be held Fridays (Sept. 16 through Oct. 7), from 2:30-3:45 p.m., and are free (participants will need to purchase one book). You must sign up in order to participate. Contact Dr. Cynthia Bane, professor of psychology, for more information or to register.

Adviser for Students for Peace and Justice — Students for Peace and Justice is looking for a new adviser. We are an organization dedicated to bringing awareness of social injustices and ways we can help. If interested, please email hannah.creed@wartburg.edu.

New administrative assistant to the president — Please welcome Joy Skinner as administrative assistant to the president. Joy brings a variety of experience from her work in the financial and broadcast industries. She earned a bachelor’s degree in electronic media from the University of Northern Iowa. Her first day is Sept. 19.

New archivist — Vogel Library announces the arrival of Wartburg’s new archivist, Amy Moorman. Amy comes from the Missouri State Archives, where she was the visual materials archivist. As the archivist for Wartburg College and the Archives of Iowa Broadcasting, she will work preserve and highlight the archives’ unique collections. Please join us in welcoming Amy to the Wartburg community. Archives-related research requests, donations, and other inquiries should be sent to Amy. The archives will be open Monday-Friday, 1-4 p.m., for drop-in visits and by appointment.

Newspapers available — The Readership Program will continue offering the following publications: USA TodayDes Moines Register, and Waterloo Courier. You can find these newspapers at the north end of the Student Center, Whitehouse Business Center outside Admissions, Clinton Hall Lounge (after renovation completion), near the information desk of Vogel Library, and Cardinal Commons within Lohe/Grossman Hall. Papers will not be delivered until the afternoon this year due to a change in delivery methods. Any questions, comments, or concerns may be addressed to senate@wartburg.edu

Hip-hop workshop — The UNI Dance Team, Orchesis Dance Co., and the Wartburg Hip-Hop Dance Team will present “So You Think You Can Dance,” a hip-hop workshop by choreographer Zach Benson on Saturday, Sept. 24, 9 a.m.-noon, in the aerobic room upstairs in UNI’s WRC. PROFESSIONAL NOTES

Dr. Shawn Ellerbroek, Otto Professor in Chemistry, recently published the article “Arg188 Drives RhoC Membrane Binding” in the peer-reviewed journal Small GTPases. The research, which looked at the molecular divergence of two proteins involved in cancer, was produced and co-authored with current and past Wartburg biochemistry students. 

Stephanie Klemetson, music tour, camp and promotion manager, was recently re-elected to the executive board of the College Music Tour Managers Association (CMTMA) during the organization’s recent annual conference at Valparaiso University. Nearly 40 colleges and universities, including Wartburg, are members of this organization. CMTMA supports professionals who manage music ensembles at the collegiate level, with special emphasis in ensemble tour management.

Jim Miller, coach emeritus, was the closing speaker at the Value Summit for The VGM Group on Aug. 31.

Dr. Bill Withers, professor of journalism and communication, was the guest of Iowa Valley Community College, Marshalltown, as part of a management/leadership development workshop for Lennox, Inc., on Sept. 8. Withers led a leadership development session for 75 of Lennox’s managers and leaders as part of programming for the company’s chapter of the National Management Association. The session was coordinated by IVCC’s Business and Industry Training division.
