What is Supplemental Instruction?
Supplemental Instruction (SI) was created by a graduate student in 1973 at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) to improve student learning, student performance, and student retention. SI has since grown into an international program spanning 30 countries and over 2,500 institutions. Though the program is always improving, the initial goals of collaborative learning remain.
Components of Supplemental Instruction:
- Peer-facilitated sessions
- Free to all enrolled students
- Regularly scheduled, voluntary sessions
- Extensive training of SI Leaders
- Faculty supported
