Sexual Misconduct Prevention Training — The 2013 federal Campus Save Act requires all students, faculty, and staff at Wartburg to participate in a prevention and awareness program relating to sexual misconduct and related offenses. Students are required to complete the online "Sexual Misconduct Prevention Training." All students must complete Part 1 and 2 (check your email for the link) by Monday, Feb. 22. For students who haven’t yet finished Part 1, there is a 30-day wait before having access to Part 2. Please keep this in mind and plan accordingly. Students will not be able to register for 2016-17 classes until they have completed the training. Returning students who completed Part 1 last year do not have to re-take the course, but are strongly encouraged to log in and complete Part 2. NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS
Hourly Wage Increase — Beginning with the March 15 payroll, dining and maintenance operational student employees will receive pay increases. This program is intended for college students who work in operational aspect of these departments. The base pay will increase from $7.25 per hour to $7.50 per hour. The goal of this program is to encourage student employee retention in these departments and thus improve quality of services and numbers of employees. Details of the plan will be posted here later today.
Super Bowl event — Student Center Council presents the Snack Bowl, a free event for students, on Sunday, Feb. 7 in the ballrooms. Watch the Panthers and Broncos face off in Super Bowl 50 in our Football Lounge with a 10x10 projection screen. We'll have trivia, a nacho bar and root beer floats. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. and food starts at 6.
SCAA winners — The winner of the Dr. Peggy & Kendall Pruisner Scholarly and Creative Activity Award is Dr. Karen Black. The winner of the Dr. Peggy & Kendall Pruisner Early Career Scholarly and Creative Activity Award is David Herwaldt. Black will present her research on March 11 at 4 p.m., and Herwaldt will present his research on March 18 at 4 p.m., both as part of the Phil & Lit series.
Apply to live in The Residence — The Residence is a living and learning environment in which residents come together as a group to identify and meet a need in the community. Applications are now available and are due Feb. 26; click here for details. Presentations for group projects will be March 7 and 9.
Wartburg West fall classes — Dr. Brian McQueen will teach two classes through Wartburg West in fall 2016: The Metropolis and Crime & Deviance. McQueen will spend three weeks teaching onsite in Denver and facilitate the other portion through distance learning. Culture Show auditions — Culture Week is coming March 13-17. Sign up for the Culture Show, which will be 8 p.m. March 19. All students can participate, whether IClub members or not, international or American. You can do anything that you think best portrays your creativity and diversity. Auditions are 2-5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, in the Chapel Commons. Sign-up sheets are posted on the IClub office doors.
German Institute applications — The German Institute seeks applications for funds to support activities/endeavors related to German and/or Germany. For 2016-17, $5,000 is available from external sources. In the past, the Institute has funded enrichments to May Term trips to Germany, the German film festival, learning materials for the faculty/staff heritage tour, and subsidized student travel to Germany for study abroad. Applications for the full amount of available funds will likely not be supported in full. Applications are due March 15. Awards will be announced by April 1. Click here to see application details. Giant Heart Valentine Cookies — Order a giant heart cookie for your sweetheart throughGET online ordering (use the "catering take out" store) through Monday, Feb. 15. Cookies will be available to pick up in the Den. The cookies can be decorated with your choice of message: “Be Mine,” “Hugs & Kisses,” or “My BFF.” If you have questions or want to add a personal message, call the dining office at ext. 8303.
Phil and Lit – The next meeting of the Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society is Friday, Feb. 5, at 4 p. m. in McCoy West of the Saemann Student Center. Dr. Matthew Zart, assistant professor of chemistry, will present Metalloenzymes: The Inspiration for Synthetic Small Molecules containing Hydrogen-Bonding Networks. The society meets most Friday afternoons during the academic year for presentations by a colleague in an informal, convivial setting. Beverages and snacks are available.
German Film Series — The next film in the German Film Series Crossing Boundaries with German Film will be screened on Feb. 9 at 7:15 p.m. in WBC 116. Almanya: Welcome to Germany (2011) is a tragi-comedy that follows three generations of a German-Turkish immigrant family as they journey across intergenerational and cultural divides to shape, understand, and affirm their identity. Free admission. Open to the public.
Retreat at EWALU — Take time with other Wartburg students to reflect, play games, and enjoy the great outdoors at Camp EWALU in Strawberry Point from Friday evening, Feb. 12, to Saturday afternoon, Feb. 13. Food and transportation provided. A $10 registration fee is due by noon Friday, Feb. 5, to Kathy Liddle in the Spiritual Life & Campus Ministry office. Submissions for Knightline — Send in your news/events for the next edition of Knightline, our monthly e-newsletter that goes out to Wartburg alumni, parents and friends. The February edition will be going out on Thursday, Feb. 4. Please complete the “Knightline Submission Form” (click here) by the end of the day Monday, Feb. 1.
Castle submissions — The Castle, Wartburg's literary magazine, is accepting submissions this semester through Monday, March 7. Submissions can include poetry, short stories, photography, and artwork. There is no limit on submissions, but only three will be accepted per person per semester. Additionally, if you are interested in joining the student editing board, let us know. Volunteer for NCAA Championships — Interested in volunteering at the National Outdoor Track and Field Championships that Wartburg is hosting May 26-28? Registration is now open; click here to register by March 1 to be guaranteed a t-shirt.
Off-campus housing applications — Students desiring to live off campus for the 2016-17 academic year must apply for approval from the Residential Life Office. All off-campus decisions are made through the Off-Campus Review Committee. Request for approval MUST be submitted in the Residential Life Office by 4 p.m. Feb. 26. Late applications will not be accepted. Students who receive a scholarship that requires them to live on campus must meet with Financial Aid before submitting an application so they understand the impact off-campus approval may have on their financial aid. A form from your Financial Aid meeting must be turned in with your application; incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Please contact Cassie Hales for details, or check the online Student Handbookfor policies about living off campus. Moving off campus without prior approval will result in receiving a room assignment on campus and a meal plan. You will be held responsible for full room and board charges for the 2016-17 academic year.
Student Tax Forms – Student W-2 and 1098-T tax forms that haven't been picked up will be mailed to your home address. International students’ W-2 forms will be sent directly to the International Programs Office.
Hoverboard safety — The college’s safety committee is looking into the safety of hoverboards, especially in context of recent hoverboard battery fires nationwide. Currently, there is no ban for outdoor use at Wartburg College. However, students with hoverboards must not overcharge them and never leave them unattended while charging. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), a federal agency with jurisdiction over product safety, is currently investigating hoverboard safety; see details online. If the college changes its policy on hoverboards as we learn more about the risks involved, we will inform the campus community.
WRSL survey — The Writing Reading Speaking Lab (WRSL), located on the third floor of the Vogel Library, wants student feedback about hours of operation and availability of appointment times. Please click here to take a very short survey. For any questions, please email Jette Irgens.
Trash sorting — The city has asked for special attention from students in sorting trash. Trash should only be put in the green trash dumpster, and only cardboard should go in the brown cardboard dumpster. Placing trash in the cardboard dumpster will increase residence hall operating costs.
Water to Thrive dinner — Wartburg College Water to Thrive is hosting an all-you-can-eat pancake dinner on Friday, Feb. 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. The event will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Parish Hall in Waverly. A free-will donation will be collected; all proceeds will fund a freshwater well in rural Africa. Email wtt@wartburg.edu with questions.
Dance Marathon — It's not too late to sign up for Wartburg College Dance Marathon and help raise money for the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital, a part of Children’s Miracle Network. Silent auction fundraiser for Laura Tull Adams — The Wartburg Student Music Therapy Association will hold a silent auction Feb. 4-6 for 2014 alumna Laura Tull Adams. Laura is currently under critical care in Des Moines following an emergency C-section and diagnosis of acute necrosis of the pancreas. The silent auction will take place on our Facebook page beginning at 12 a.m. Feb. 4; all proceeds will go to Laura and her family. Some items will go to the highest bidder and others will be gifted by the highest bidder to Laura. Winter professional development — Join us for an upbeat, engaging session focused on who you are, who you want to be, and how you can find increased joy and energy through tapping into your unique, most powerful ways to lead and serve. Featured speaker will be Brenda Clark-Hamilton. Students are invited to attend the student session, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Feb. 16 in Heritage Ballrooms.
Dressers for sale — Cost is $15 each, and they can be viewed anytime 8 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays at the Physical Plant, 305 12th St NW. The dressers must be picked up when payment is made. Contact Ruth Hein with questions.
Bremwood mentors — Become a Mentor at Bremwood Residential Treatment Center by taking one hour a week to visit with a child. Holly Janecke, volunteer coordinator at Bremwood, will be at Wartburg after Midweek Chapel and during the lunch hour on Monday, Feb. 1, with more information about the mentoring program.
