NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

MLK Jr. Day class schedule — Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day; Wartburg alters the class schedule on this federal holiday to free students and faculty to participate in afternoon service projects. Class periods one through six will meet for 50 minutes with a 10-minute break between each. Weekday Chapel will not be held. Evening classes will meet at their regularly scheduled time. Period 1 (regularly starting at 7:45 a.m.) will be 7:45-8:35 a.m. Period 2 (9 a.m.) will be 8:45-9:35 a.m. Period 3 (10:45 a.m.) will be 9:45-10:35 a.m. Period 4 (noon) will be 10:45-11:35 a.m. Period 5 (1:15 p.m.) will be 11:45 a.m. to 12:35 p.m. Period 6 (2:30 p.m.) will be 12:45-1:35 p.m.

Recipes from Home — Alumni, students, staff and faculty are encouraged to share favorite recipes from home to be considered from the 2015-16 Mensa menu. Please email recipes for entrees, ethnic dishes, vegan entrees or sides and desserts to Shelly Geweke, Dining Services nutrition and services advisor, or drop them in the Mensa suggestion box by Monday, Jan. 25. Include your name and contact information. Recipes chosen will be taste-tested in Mensa, and the student body will vote for their favorites. Dishes that receive good feedback will be considered for next year's Mensa menu. 

 

Phil and Lit – The first Winter Term meeting of the Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society is Friday, Jan. 22, at 4 p.m. in McCoy West in Saemann Student Center. Dr. Erika Lindgren, associate professor of history, will present Medieval Monasticism in the Scottish Islands. The society meets most Friday afternoons during the academic year for presentations by a colleague in an informal, convivial setting. Beverages and snacks are available.

PAC meeting agenda — The PAC meeting will be held Thursday, Jan. 21, at 1:30 p.m. in Library 353. The agenda is as follows:

  • Feedback from campus on additional holiday/office closures over holiday break
  • Open seat — ballot to go out for hourly seat
  • Performance appraisal process and recommended changes
  • Kronos update
  • Staff retreat

 

Doubles pickleball — This week is the last to sign up for doubles pickleball. Equipment will be provided for your own league. Play begins this week. Contact Jill Eckenrod, Wellness Center member account manager, at ext. 8716 before 3 p.m. today.

President’s Office coverage — Cindy Carlson, executive administrative assistant to the president, will be out of the office for several months due to a serious health issue. Paula Michel is filling in periodically to assist with day-to-day office functions. Please continue to direct e-mail correspondence to thecindy.carlson@wartburg.edu and president@wartburg.edu accounts. Janeen Stewart will perform these duties on days that Paula is not available. Janeen can also answer any questions needing more in-depth research or attention. Cindy continues to check e-mail as she’s able and to advise us as necessary. 

 

Thank a mentor for National Mentoring Month  January is National Mentoring Month. Recognize a mentor by filling out the “Thank a Mentor” form here until noon Monday, Jan. 25. Mentors will receive electronic recognition in the afternoon. Please contact TJ Warren, Pathways associate for vocation and mentoring, with any questions. Plastic Music — ETK presents Plastic Musik Tuesday, Jan. 19, at 8 p.m. in Neumann Auditorium. From Mozart to Motown, Plastic Musik puts a radical twist on the greatest hits of our time. Unassumingly armed with boom whackers, buckets, and kiddie pools, they attack profound compositions with scores of energy. 

 

Crossing Boundaries with German Film — The German film series Crossing Boundaries with German Film continues with the presentation of Sophie Scholl:The Final Days (2005) on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 7:15 p.m. in WBC 116. The film presents the world of Sophie Scholl and other members of the "White Rose" student resistance movement in Hitler’s Germany. Free admission. Open to the public.

 

2016 Baldwin Leadership Fellows Nominations — Nominate a first-year student for the Baldwin Leadership Fellows. Nominees will ideally come from diverse academic backgrounds and be passionate about leadership and service in the context of the Wartburg mission. The ILE will select four first-year students to serve as Baldwin Leadership Fellows, which includes attendance at the Air Force Academy National Character & Leadership Symposium in Colorado during the second year in the program. Become a Chapel Ambassador — Help make faculty and staff faith mentors more visible to the student body, combat the culture of busyness on campus, and become more intentional in living out our calling as a College of the Church. On Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays at 10:10 a.m., close your office door or tell your supervisor that you want to attend Chapel. Put up a small sign on your office door (or elsewhere) that identifies you as a Chapel Ambassador who is open to talking about faith. ContactPastor Brian or Pastor Ramona if you’re interested or have questions.

University of Iowa Bridge Program — The University of Iowa College of Law is hosting “The Bridge Program," designed to introduce students of color to law school, in Iowa City on Tuesday, Feb. 19, and Wednesday, Feb. 20. Throughout the two-day program, students learn what it’s like to be a law student and factors law schools consider in applications. The College of Law will cover most of the travel expenditures, including hotel rooms and travel cost. For more information on attending, contact Karen Thalacker, pre-law advisor.

GPA report — The latest Grade Point Average Report has been posted on the Info Center. Contact Edie Waldstein with questions.

Study abroad applications — Learn in a diverse setting and gain language skills, flexibility, and independence. Submit your application for the 2016-17 year by Feb. 1.

Unified Sports Day — Unified Sports Day will be Saturday, Feb. 13, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in The W's Hoover Fieldhouse. Sign up to volunteer on the following dates: Wednesday, Jan. 20, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Student Center (north entrance) and 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the women’s and men’s basketball doubleheader (Hall of Champions); and Thursday, Jan. 21, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. in the Student Center (north entrance). Keep on Learning proposals — The Alumni Office is now requesting Keep on Learning proposals for the 2016-17 academic year. The Keep on Learning program offers a series of four-week courses to all residents of the Cedar Valley during seven months of the academic year. Keep on Learning — Wartburg College’s Keep on Learning continuing education series continues Jan. 21 with classes examining the influence of first ladies on the presidency. Graham Garner, Wartburg’s vice president for marketing and communication, will lead the discussion on “Presidential Partnerships: American Presidents and First Ladies.” A $30 fee covers the session. Classes wrap up on Jan. 28 in the Heritage Room of Saemann Student Center For more information, click here.

Professor Kim Folkers facilitated a workshop in Mason City Jan. 9 for members of the Healthy Harvest of North Iowa organization. "Planning to Grow" focused on the power of marketing and a marketing plan to help local growers expand their own businesses.

Dr. Kunihiko Terasawa, assistant professor of world religions, has published his article Buddhist-Christian Double Belongings in the Dharma World, January-March 2016, vol. 43 edition Dual Religious Identity: Can One Practice Two Religions?

Nelson and Bonita Bock, Wartburg West co-directors, received the Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods'Tom Knorr Good Neighbor Award on Jan. 7 in Denver, Colorado. The Bocks and Wartburg West, located in Capitol Hill, were honored for involving students in the neighborhood.
