Bussie to receive Graven Award today
|
Jacqueline Bussie, an award-winning author, professor, theologian and advocate for justice, will receive Wartburg College’s annual Graven Award on Monday, Oct. 24.
She will accept the award during Weekday Chapel at 10:15 a.m, and everyone is welcome to attend.
Her books include “Outlaw Christian: Finding Authentic Faith by Breaking the Rules,” which won the 2017 Gold Medal Illumination Award for Christian Living, and “Love Without Limits: Jesus’ Radical Vision for a Love with No Exceptions,” which has been recognized with the Readers’ Favorite Bronze Medal International Book Award for Christian Living and the 2020 IAN Outstanding Religion Book of the Year Award.
The Graven Award, now in its 33rd year, honors one “whose life is nurtured and guided by a strong sense of Christian calling and who is making a significant contribution to community, church and society.”

National Book Winner to speak at MBK Symposium Nov. 3
|
Martín Espada, winner of the 2021 National Book Award for Poetry, will read selections of his work at the annual Michaelson, Briner & Kildahl Literary Symposium on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m. in the McCaskey Lyceum. He will sign books after his talk, and copies of “Floaters” will be available for purchase. The North American Review will sell copies of its most recent issue, which features Espada.
Espada has published more than 20 books as a poet, editor, essayist, and translator. He has received the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, the Shelley Memorial Award, the Robert Creeley Award, an Academy of American Poets Fellowship, the PEN/Revson Fellowship, a Letras Boricuas Fellowship and a Guggenheim Fellowship.
The symposium was created to bring an author, poet, or other literary figure to campus to engage students, faculty, staff, and the broader community in activities to stimulate critical thought.

New library director, college librarian named
|
Sarah Voels ’09 has been selected to serve as the director of Vogel Library and college librarian effective today, Oct. 24. Voels is coming back to Wartburg after serving in the Cedar Rapids Public Library since 2016, most recently as the community engagement librarian. After graduating from Wartburg with a degree in English Literature, Voels went on to earn a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh. She is currently a doctoral student in information science at Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois. Much of her research has focused on representation in the library collection. Chapel time is a brief opportunity to gather with students, staff, and faculty to reflect on God and faith. Mondays feature faculty and staff faith stories and blessings, Wednesdays include Holy Communion to which all are welcome, and Fridays have Senior Chapels.

Dr. Samantha Larimer Bousquet, professor of biology, accompanied six students to the annual Midbrains Conference in Eau Claire, Wis, on Oct. 22: Pedro Martinez ’23, Jenna Smuszkiewicz ’23, Jordan Swiatkowski ’23, Tsering Tashi ’23, Liz Ashing ’24, and Robert Al Khoury '24. Martinez presented his poster, “Enlarged Perivascular Spaces in Patients with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: Characterization with 7T MRI and Relationship with Neurobehavioral Outcome,” research he completed this summer at the University of Illinois – Carle Hospital. Smuszkiewicz presented their poster, “Synaptic Gene RNAi Knockdown Effects on Behavioral Homeostasis in Drosophila,” research they conducted last year at Wartburg with Bryce Butler ’22, Aaron Frohner ’22, Gianna Witmer ’23, and Dr. Stephanie Toering Peters, professor of biology. Travel was supported by Undergraduate Research and IINspire. |

Dr. Karolina Achirri has joined the editorial board and will serve as a reviewer for The Qualitative Report, a peer-reviewed interdisciplinary journal. She will provide expertise on qualitative research methodology, intercultural communication, language identities and ideologies, and international education. |

Dr. Michael Gleason, the Irving R. Burling Distinguished Professor in Leadership, recently facilitated two concurrent sessions at the International Leadership Association Conference in Washington, D.C. He co-facilitated a workshop, “Co-Inquiry: An Approach to Co-Creating Wisdom in Challenging Times,” and participated in a panel, “Developing Wise Leaders in Graduate and Professional School Settings.” |

Dr. Michael Bechtel ’94 will present Ioponics at the 2022 Iowa Agriculture in the Classroom Learning Conference on Nov. 17 in West Des Moines. He will present with Michaela Dehli about the continuing educational work and research that started on the Wartburg College campus. Ioponics systems are now in 250 classrooms and 70 counties across Iowa. |

Dr. Michael Bechtel ’94 and Noah Christians ’21 will present their continued research into biophilia in the classroom at the 2022 National Association of Biology Teachers’ National Conference in Indianapolis from Nov. 10-13. The presentation is titled “Biophilia Effects on Long-Term Concept Retention, Academic Achievement, and Intrinsic Motivation in Secondary Science Classrooms.” |

Tim Wengenack presented his economics research paper, “Does COVID-19 Influence Inflation in the United States,” at the Missouri Valley Economic Association Conference in St. Louis on Oct. 7. He was accompanied by his faculty adviser, Dr. Nana Quaicoe, assistant professor in economics and the James Leach Chair in Banking and Monetary Economics. Using a vector-autoregression model and impulse response functions, Wengenack found a statistically significant positive relationship between COVID-19 cases and the inflation rate, although there was a noticeable lag. |

Apply now for student loan debt relief
|
The federal Student Loan Debt Relief application is available and takes less than a minute to complete. If you have an outstanding balance on a federal loan you took out before July 2022, you could qualify for up to $10,000 in relief. If you're a recipient of a Pell Grant, you may qualify for up to $20,000.
You only need to provide your name, Social Security number, date of birth, phone number, and email address, then confirm you fall into one of the eligible income categories and submit your application.
The Department of Education will determine your eligibility and will contact you if they need more information. Your loan servicer will notify you when your relief is processed. Beware of scams: Only work with your federal loan servicer and never pay any fees. |

Vote early on campus Oct. 25
|
An absentee satellite voting station will be opened in Saemann Student Center for the upcoming midterm elections from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25. All eligible voters are encouraged to take advantage of this convenient early voting opportunity. If you are not registered to vote in Iowa, you can do so at the satellite station.
You'll need a Voter Verification Number to submit your in-person absentee ballot. For in-state students with a valid Iowa driver's license, this will be your Iowa driver's license number. If you are an out-of-state student or a student without a valid Iowa driver's license, you will need to request an Iowa Voter ID card from the Bremer County Auditor's office; email swolf@co.bremer.ia.us to make this request as soon as possible. The Iowa Voter ID card will have a PIN which will function as your Voter Verification Number.

German Institute seeks funding pitches
|
The Executive Committee of the German Institute is pleased to announce a call for applications to support activities or endeavors related to the German language or Germany. In the past, the institute has funded enrichments to May Term trips to Germany, the German film festival, learning materials for the faculty/staff heritage tour, and subsidized student travel to Germany for study abroad.
For 2022-23, a total of $2,000 is still available from external sources. Because these funds are limited, an application is required and funding will be awarded on a competitive basis. Applications for the full amount of available funds will most likely not be supported in full at this time. Applications are due Nov. 7. Awards will be announced no later than Nov. 21. Annual safety report released
|
The 2021-22 Annual Campus Security and Fire Safety Report has been released. This required report contains crime statistics from 2019 through 2021 and addresses the college’s policies, procedures, and programs concerning safety and security, such as responding to emergency situations and reporting sexual misconduct. Additionally, the report contains information related to fire safety. You can request a paper copy in the Campus Security Office in Saemann Student Center. |
