Segregation simulation — Promote equal rights during Black History Month through a weeklong segregation simulation starting today, Feb. 2. Signs will direct participating students to bathrooms, water fountains, and more that can or cannot be used based on one’s eye color. Faculty involvement is key to the simulation; resources are available for bringing the simulation to the classroom. Graduate Status Report — The Enrollment Management Office has released the Class of 2013-14 Graduate Status Report, which includes responses from 366 of 383 graduates from December 2013, May 2014, and August 2014. Click here for the full report.
- The placement rate was 97 percent: 62 percent reported being employed full-time, 21 percent were continuing their education, 8 percent were employed part-time, 4 percent were volunteering, and 2 percent were pursuing other options or not in the job market. Three percent were seeking employment or applying to graduate/professional school.
- Seventy-two percent of Iowa residents remained in Iowa, as did 27 percent of residents of other states and 33 percent of international students.
- The top five employers of the class, in order, are Rockwell Collins, John Deere, Hormel Foods, Target Corporation, and Mayo Clinic.
Student awards reminder — Honor our outstanding students and organizations by nominating them for the Nobility Award, Outstanding Organization, Outstanding International Senior, Dell Awards for Peach & Justice, Outstanding Organization Service Award, Debbie Heida Award, and Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges by Friday, Feb. 6. Literary symposium planned — A series of events focused on Striking Languages: Language in Research, Expression, and the Professional World is planned for this week. Events include:
- The Michealson, Briner & Kildahl Literary Symposium, Tuesday, Feb. 3, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., in McCaskey Lyceum, with guest speakers
- Dr. Patrick Malloy, Hawkeye Community College, Calamities of Uncertain Guests and Second-hand Clothes: Images of the Early AIDS Epidemic from Swahili Newspaper Poetry
- Dr. Elise Dubord, University of Northern Iowa, Language, Immigration, and Labor
- Dr. Thomas Farmer, University of Iowa, We Never Stop Learning Language: Adaptation to Novel of Atypical Linguistic Events.

Artist Series show — On the 56th anniversary of their final performance, the music of legends Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and Jiles Richardson (better known as The Big Bopper) will come to life tonight, Feb. 2, 7:30 p.m., on Neumann Auditorium's stage. John Mueller’s Winter Dance Party recreates the trio’s 1959 performance at the iconic Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. The rock ‘n’ roll pioneers died in a plane crash the next morning a few miles outside of Clear Lake. Tickets are $25 to $35 and available online at www.wartburg.edu/artist, by calling 319-352-8691, or at the Saemann Student Center Ticket Office from noon to 4 p.m. Youth tickets are $10. Tickets for club seating at a table at the front of the house, with easy access to the show’s cash bar, are $45.
Festival finale — Enjoy the Meistersinger Honor Band Festival finale concert Sunday, Feb. 8, 2:15 p.m., in Neumann Auditorium. The free concert will begin with music by Wartburg’s Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Bands. The festival honor bands, featuring more than 200 students from five states, will then perform after a weekend of rehearsals.
Keep on Learning — A compilation of Charlie Chaplin’s career will be featured in the Keep on Learning community education series beginning Thursday, Feb. 5, 9:30-11:30 a.m., in the Heritage Room of Saemann Student Center. Scott Cawelti, University of Northern Iowa professor emeritus, will discuss Chaplin’s comic genius, which entranced three generations of filmgoers and bridged the silent and sound eras of film. Classes continue Feb. 12, 19, and 26. Coffee will be served at 9 a.m. The first class of each session is free; a $30 fee due at the second class covers the rest of the course. Faculty Brass Quintet debuts — A brass quintet of Wartburg music instructors will debut at a recital Tuesday, Feb. 3, 6:30 p.m., in Sandra Rada Orchestra Hall of Bachman Fine Arts Center. The free recital features six selections from the 16th through 20th centuries. The Faculty Brass Quintet includes Dr. Scott Muntefering and Jim Vaux on trumpet, Andy Harris on horn, Bard Mackey on trombone, and Richard Scheffel on tuba.
Knightline submissions — The February edition of Knightline, the monthly e-newsletter for alumni, parents, and friends of Wartburg, will be sent Thursday, Feb. 5. French film festival — Enjoy GriGris, about a male dancer with a paralyzed leg who overcomes all odds, Tuesday, Feb. 3, 6 p.m., in Whitehouse Business
Center 116, as part of the Tournées Film Festival. The French Club and the Film Society are hosting the six-film festival thanks to a grant from the French American Cultural Exchange. Phil and Lit — The Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society will meet Friday, Feb. 6, 4 p.m., in McCoy West. Dr. Keith McClung, professor of biology, will present The Rational Treatment of Cancer.
Dance Marathon Night at the Waterloo Black Hawks — Join Wartburg College Dance Marathon Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Waterloo Black Hawks game. Ticket orders and payment are due to the Business Office Thursday, Feb. 5. Tickets are $10, with $3 going to WCDM. Email wcdm@wartburg.edu for an order form.

Enrollment report — The Enrollment Management Office has released the 2014-15 Winter Term Enrollment and Retention Report.
- The Fall-to-Winter Term retention rate is strong at 95.4 percent.
- Including 22 new students, the Winter Term 2014-15 headcount is 1560, compared with 1644 in 2013-2014.
- Seventeen students are participating in Wartburg West and 10 are studying abroad.
Academic Planner planning — Campus offices with events to be included in the 2015-16 Academic Planner should email the pertinent information to Janet Huebner, The Wartburg Store manager, at janet.huebner@wartburg.edu before Wednesday, April 15.
