HOMECOMING HAPPENINGS

Homecoming t-shirts
Don’t miss out on this year’s Homecoming & Family Weekend t-shirts! Sales have begun in Saemann Student Center, under the Shotwell Tower, on Mondays 5-7 p.m. and Tuesdays and Wednesdays 11:15 a.m.-12:45 p.m. and 5:15-6:45 p.m. T-shirts will be sold until Wednesday, Oct. 10. They are first-come, first served, so don’t miss out!

Parade and Renaissance Faire
Groups and organizations of all types are invited to walk, ride, or dance during the Homecoming parade on Saturday, Oct. 20. Be creative! Cash prizes for first- ($500), second- ($300), and third-place ($150) entries will be given to Wartburg student organizations. Groups can show Wartburg spirit by setting up a booth at the Renaissance Faire on Saturday, Oct. 20! A $25 fee will be applied to your organization's campus account; we will supply your group with one or two tables. Click here to register for both by Thursday, Oct. 11.

Parade supplies available
Parade supplies are available free of charge for student organizations to create parade entries. Items include window paint, vehicle decorations, hayrack supplies, candy and more. Personalized banners will also be provided for interested organizations. All items will be stored for reuse for future Homecoming & Family Weekend celebrations. Email the Homecoming Committee for more information.

Spirit Contest
Show your Knight pride during Homecoming by registering to participate in the Spirit Contest! The painter of the first-, second- and third-place windows will receive cash prizes of $200, $100 and $50, respectively (only student are eligible for prizes). Reminder: You MUST register here to qualify for prizes. Photos submitted without prior registration will NOT be eligible for prizes. Photo submissions are due Sunday, Oct 14.

Unlimited $5 tickets for All-American Rejects concert
The 2018 Large Event Concert featuring the All-American Rejects is less than a week away! Entertainment ToKnight (ETK) is thankful for Wartburg students’ support and looks forward to a great show. As a sign of appreciation, ETK has decided to open up unlimited $5 ticket sales to students Monday, Oct. 1, to Friday, Oct. 5. Students will be able to pick up additional tickets for their family and friends at the $5 discounted price during this five-day period. Ticket Office agents will be available for sales from 5 to 7 p.m. near the north stairwell of Saemann Student Center. Make sure to pick up your additional $5 tickets next week for #LargeEvent18! Summer Leadership and Service Summit mentors
The Summer Leadership and Service Summit is looking for Wartburg students to mentor high school students June 22-29 and July 13-20, 2019. Mentors can apply for one or both sessions. Applications and a detailed description are available at www.wartburg.edu/lss-mentors. The position benefits are a $400 stipend, room and board during the summit, and 0.5 credit for completing LS 315, which is required during Winter Term. Contact Ashley Lang with questions.
Librarian candidate on-campus presentation
Faculty, staff and students are invited to observe the presentation of Jamie Byerly, candidate for information literacy librarian, Tuesday, Oct. 2, 1:15 p.m. to 2 p.m. in Vogel Library Classroom 1. The faculty librarian hired for this position will liaise to Departments of Education, Journalism & Communication, Business Administration, and possibly Social Sciences and Social Work, among other areas. Byerly has been a reference/online services and resources librarian at Shorter University in Rome, Georgia, since August 2017. She has earned her master’s in library science from the University of Iowa.
Wartburg Store specials during Outfly
The Wartburg Store will be open special hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with Outfly games and discounts offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If Outfly occurs Oct. 1-3, the store will be unable to offer Outfly games and discounts due to an industry conference commitment. If this happens, please keep an eye out for future Outfly-inspired deals.
Send a special treat to a friend
For more than 50 years, the Wartburg Women’s Club has provided treats to students to raise funds for student scholarships. This has been popular with parents to send to their students, but you can send a treat to a friend or significant other, too, to celebrate a birthday, a big day, or just because. You can purchase one treat for $15 or three for $40. Options are cake with frosting, brownies, chocolate chip cookies (three dozen), fruit basket, or
PowerSack (assortment of chips, candy, granola bar, Gatorade, etc.). Last year, the group gave six $1,000 scholarships. Click here to see details and place an order.
Math, Computer Science and Physics Department Seminar
The next Math, Computer Science & Physics (MCSP) Department Seminar will be held Tuesday, Oct. 2, 11:30 a.m., in Room 134 of the Science Center. Codey Olson '19 (physics, mathematics) will give an introduction to the Nuclear Forensics Undergraduate Summer School (NFUSS) program he participated in at the University of Utah and discuss some of the applications of nuclear forensics. All are invited, refreshments will be provided.
Water to Thrive meeting
Water to Thrive will host a meeting in The W classrooms Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m.
Second annual Wicked Problems Challenge
Do you have an idea that will tackle a “wicked problem”? If so, we need you! Apply to the second annual Wicked Problems Challenge. To submit a proposal or for additional information, please click here. Join the Wicked Problems planning team at a “How to Write a Proposal” workshop on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 11:30 a.m. in WBC 217. V-Day Candlelight Dinner sign-up
The sign-up for the Candlelight Dinner hosted by V-Day Campaign will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 3, and Thursday, Oct. 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. in Mensa. The V-Day campaign will discuss their organization while students, faculty, and staff mingle over dinner on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 6:30 p.m. in the Heritage Ballroom in Saemann Student Center. The cost for students with a board plan is one swipe from their meal plan plus $3. This may be paid with points or cash at the time of sign-up. Off-board students may also attend, and their cost will be $15 at the time of sign-up. Special dietary considerations will be taken into account. The main entree for the evening will be Grilled Boneless Pork Loin Chop.
Recipes from Home 2018
Students, faculty and staff are asked to share their favorite recipes from home to be considered for the 2019-20 Mensa menu. Please email recipes for entrees, salads, ethnic dishes, vegan entrees or sides and desserts to Shelly Geweke by Friday, Jan. 31, 2019. Don’t forget to include your name and contact information for verification. Recipes chosen will be taste-tested in Mensa and the student body will vote for their favorites. Dishes that receive a “thumbs-up” will be considered for next year’s Mensa menu.
Travel to Japan for May Term
A few spaces remain available in the Japan May Term course (GM 232). The class will focus on Japanese culture and how traditional beliefs, religion and the supernatural persist in legends, landscapes and rituals, in busy modern cities as well as remote mountain forests. Minutes from first Student Senate meeting
Student Senate had its first meeting last Thursday. To read the minutes from the meeting, click here. Starting next week, students should be getting weekly minutes from your floor representatives. They will be notifying you about who they are this week, but for now if you have any questions about Senate please email senate@wartburg.edu. As always, hope you're excited for Outfly “tomorrow”!
Phil & Lit Society
The next speaker for the Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society is Dr. Terrence Lindell, professor of history. The title of his talk is Bremer County Germans and the First World War. The talk is Friday, Oct. 5, 4 p.m. in McCoy West in Seamann Student Center. Refreshments will be provided.
Campus Security and Fire Report
The 2018-19 Campus Security and Fire Report has been released and posted on the InfoCenter. This required report contains crime statistics from 2015-17 and addresses the college’s policies, procedures, and programs concerning safety and security, such as responding to emergency situations and reporting sexual misconduct. Additionally, the report contains information related to fire safety. You can request a paper copy in the Campus Security Office located in Saemann Student Center.

Sign up for Outfly activities
Sign up now for the Outfly Sand Volleyball Tournament or the Wartburg Traditions Amazing Race. Volleyball teams should have six to eight members. Amazing Race teams should have three to five members. Prizes will be given out. For more information and to sign up, click here. If you live off-campus and would like a call the morning of Outfly, click here to sign up. There will also be a sign-up form for these activities and off-campus notifications on the window of the Student Senate office.
ELCA seminary admission counselors on campus
There will be a traveling group of admissions counselors from multiple ELCA seminaries on campus Monday, Oct. 1. They will attend chapel at 10:15 a.m., Dr. Riswold’s class at 10:45 a.m. and lunch with Dr. Terasawa and Dr. Schenkewitz at 11:50 a.m. Interested students are encouraged to join them for lunch at 11:50 a.m.
Cash bags for Renaissance Fair booths
If your student organization will have a booth at Ren Faire on Oct. 20 and will need a cash bag for change, the deadline is noon Tuesday, Oct. 9. Requests turned in after this date will not be honored. A payment voucher form must be filled out with the amount and denominations needed. This form can be found on the InfoCenter website in the Business Office section under “Forms.” Please make sure your advisor signs the form. Completed forms should be turned in to Sherri Mennenga in the Business Office. Bags will be ready for pick up on Friday, Oct. 19.
Notice from the Business Office
Students with an account balance greater than $1,000 must contact the Business Office (Luther Hall 212, 319-352-8411) or Financial Aid Office (Luther Hall 212, 319-352-8262) as soon as possible to discuss payment and/or loan options. Students failing to pay their account balance in full or below $1,000 by Thursday, Nov. 8, may have their Winter/May Term registration cancelled by Enrollment Management. Those applying student employment wages to their account and who feel their balance will be below $1,000 by the November student payroll should inform the Business Office. Those signed up for the Monthly Tuition Payment Plan and current with payments can disregard this notice.

The Career Expo will be Thursday, Oct. 4, 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m., in The W’s Hall of Champions. The expo is intended for all majors and all class years as a way to make connections with real businesses, organizations, and graduate/professional schools. Some tables may even have applications, so students should dress to impress, bring a resume, and be prepared. Weekday Chapel services are from 10:15 to 10:35 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in Wartburg Chapel; Sunday services begin at 10:30 a.m. Chapel time is a brief opportunity to gather with students, staff, and faculty to reflect on God and faith. Midwest Graduate School Summit at Purdue
The Midwest Graduate School Summit will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. This one-day conference is especially designed for students interested in business, education, humanities, pharmacy, public affairs, social sciences, and related fields. Participants will have opportunity to explore graduate education, graduate student life, career opportunities, funding, and much more! The Summit offers a travel scholarship up to $500 for reimbursement on their travel expenses. Leaders in Tech conference
The first Leaders in Tech conference will be held at the University of Northern Iowa on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The conference, organized and run by Women in Computing and Management Information System Association, features experts within areas of the technology industry. Leaders in Tech is open to anyone interested in learning more about the technology industry. The first 100 registered will receive a complimentary Leaders in Tech bag, notebook, and pen. Jordan Young ’13, a history teacher at Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, has been named to the governor's first "Teachers Cabinet," as reported by the Cedar Rapids Gazette.

The football team beat Buena Vista University, 63-0, as reported by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.

Tom Trenney, minister of music at First-Plymouth Church in Lincoln, Neb., will serve as director of the Wartburg College Choir and Ritterchor through December while the ensembles’ director, Lee Nelson, is on sabbatical.

Mark Adkins ’90 will chair the College Sports Information Directors of America U Committee, an initiative to reach out to future generations of college sports information professionals, as reported by the Times Union
