The Juice (Faculty/Staff) — July 23

July 23, 2018
Road closures near campus begin today
A new phase of road construction will completely close Bremer Avenue from Seventh Street (Family Video) on the east to 11th Street (Signature Realty/Meyer Pharmacy) on the west, beginning Monday, July 23. Complete closure will reduce the amount of time it will take to finish work on this section. It will also allow use of 12th Street, Seventh Street and Sixth Street for cross traffic that would have been limited by lane separators. Please note that Fifth Street NW, which runs south of the Manors and Knights Village, has been used to travel on the north side of town. The railroad tracks along Fifth Street NW will be closed to through traffic beginning July 23 for about two months. Click here for a map detailing the road closures and alternate routes.
Invite high school students to Worth It Week
Wartburg will roll out the orange carpet for high school students with sessions beginning at 9:30 a.m. each day during Worth It Week, July 30-Aug. 3. Encourage high school students you know to schedule a visit to experience what it's like to be a Knight! Every student who visits during Worth It Week receives a $500 award per year if they enroll at Wartburg. For details and registration, click here.
NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

Sustainability Office has free supplies
As you plan for next year or write up your syllabi, don’t forget about the Sustainability Office’s Reused store. There are hundreds of binders, a lot of folders, and a smattering of other school supplies. Encourage your students to save their money and pick these up for free. We also have many desk organizers and other office supplies, so please check before ordering new. Due to an overabundance of binders and folders, employees are welcome to stop in to check these items off their children’s school supply list. During the summer, the Sustainability Office is open most Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Fall days will most likely be Tuesday through Thursday. When in doubt, just stroll on over and get some steps in! Contact Anne Duncan with questions.
Ventullo to receive honorary degree
Dr. Roy Ventullo, professor emeritus, will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Allen College at the college's summer commencement ceremony at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls.
HealthPartners – Colon cancer screening
HealthPartners is committed to ensuring members are getting their recommended preventive care. Colorectal cancer screening is not always easy or convenient, but it is critical to early detection of colorectal cancer. The FIT (Fecal Immunochemical Test) Kit is a simple test, done at home and submitted to a lab for an assessment, that detects blood in the stool. This summer, HealthPartners will be sending FIT Kits to all members who are eligible and overdue for a colorectal screening and are not currently connected with a primary care provider. A letter will be sent to eligible members’ homes in July, with the FIT Kit and instructions arriving shortly thereafter. Members who do not return the kit will receive a reminder phone call and follow-up letter. There is no cost to the member to complete and submit the FIT Kit, and those who complete the test will receive a results letter in the mail with follow-up instructions. A team of HealthPartners nurses will be available by phone during business hours for any questions regarding the test or results. If you have other questions, please contact Amy Wilson, benefits administrator at ext. 8278 or amy.wilson@wartburg.edu.
Director of Dining Services forums

All faculty, staff, and students are invited to three open forums, each from 2 to 2:30 p.m., in the Den, to meet the three candidates for the Director of Dining Services position and ask them appropriate interview questions.

  • Mike Carlson, Tuesday, July 24
  • Marty Johnson, Wednesday, July 25
  • Abdullah Jones, Thursday, July 26

We encourage all who can attend to do so each day. Janeen Stewart, executive administrator for the President's Office, will attend each day to help lead the discussion. Feedback can be provided about each candidate directly to Rich Seggerman at richard.seggerman@wartburg.edu no later than Friday, July 27, at 3 p.m. If you are interested in reviewing the cover letter and resumé of each candidate, hard copies are available for your review in Luther Hall, Room 206.

Tree removal progress on campus
The company Tri County Tree Pros has begun tree removal on the north end of campus and will continue working south across campus. Work is expected to finish up late this week or early next week, but weather conditions such as high winds and rain could extend the timeframe. For your safety, and that of the workers, please avoid the areas where work is being done and use alternate paths if needed. As a reminder, many of the trees being removed are ash trees infested with the emerald ash borer, and others are succumbing to age and other weaknesses. The Landscape and Natural Resource Committee will review replacement of the trees (species and location). Click here for more details about the tree removal plan. Contact Anne Duncan with questions.

Check rate to refinance student loan debt
Are you repaying student loans for your own education or your child’s college years? Our benefits partner has improved its student loan refinancing program to make it easier for you to find out the rates you can receive by refinancing with a Reset Loan, and reduced their rates across the board. Click here, enter a little bit of personal information on the Get My Rate page and in less than a minute you will find out what rates you would receive if you refinance. Completing this step does not impact your credit score or obligate you to apply, and it can help you easily determine if refinancing will get you a lower rate than what you’re paying now.
