Student Employee Handbook updates 
The Student Employee Handbook has been revised and can be accessed here. The Student Employment website has also been updated to include quick links to the Student Pay Stub, KnightTime Timecard, and the Supervisor Transfer Set applications.

MLK Day of Service 
Mark your calendars for the MLK Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 15. Look for the VAC table on the first floor of Saemann Student Center during weekday meals to sign up to participate. Direct questions to vac@wartburg.edu.

Social impact survey
Wartburg College would like to help all students be change-makers in their communities. In order to do so, we are considering a number of steps and need your feedback in order to serve you well. Please complete this survey, which has eight questions and will take less than five minutes. Deadline to verify board plan
Stop into the Dining Services Office (located next to the Digital Print Center on the first floor of Saemann Student Center) to make sure that you are on the correct board plan. Changes may be made by signing a board plan change form any time before Thursday, Jan. 11, at 4:30 p.m. No changes will be allowed after that time.
It's Beat Luther Week!
Students UKnight will be selling this year’s Beat Luther shirt all week long in the Student Center for $10 each. Support the men’s and women’s basketball teams as they take on the Norse in Levick Arena this Wednesday, while the wrestling team travels to Luther on Thursday. Students wearing this year’s shirt will receive a special Beat Luther decal during the basketball games while supplies last. Go Knights!
Unified Sports Day volunteers 
Volunteers are needed for Unified Sports Day on Saturday, Feb. 10, from 8:40 a.m. to 1 p.m. You will spend the day with Special Olympic Athletes, who will be participating in activities such as basketball, volleyball, crafts, and more. It is great way to give back to the community and it’s a lot of fun! Sign up at the table as you walk into the Student Center during lunch and dinner hours Jan. 8-9, or through this link. Off-Campus Release applications 
Off-Campus Release applications are available in the Student Life Office. Students desiring to live off campus for the 2018-19 academic year must apply for approval from the Residential Life Office. Applications must be submitted by Monday, Feb. 19, at 4 p.m.
Be a Knightcaller
Wartburg Knightcallers is a job about connecting with people through conversation. Knightcallers reach out to alumni, parents of alumni, and anyone with a Wartburg connection, learning about their Wartburg experience, updating their information, and discussing ways they can make an impact on the college. If you're interested in becoming a Knightcaller and having one of the highest-paying jobs on campus, email Drew Mick.
Keep on Learning proposals
The Alumni Office is now requesting Keep on Learning proposals for the 2018-19 academic year. The Keep on Learning program offers a series of four-week courses to all residents of the Cedar Valley during seven months of the academic year. All are invited to develop a course proposal for consideration. Click here for more information. 
Hearthside Project book discussion
Join Kathy Traetow, study abroad office coordinator, and other students for a Hearthside Project discussion about Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson. Candlelight dinner
The sign-up for the Candlelight Dinner hosted by Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society will take place Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 10 and 11, from 5:15 to 7 p.m., in Mensa. Phi Eta Sigma will discuss the significance of their honor society while students, faculty, and staff mingle over dinner Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 6:30 p.m., in the Heritage Ballroom. The cost for students with a Board Plan is $2. This may be paid with points or cash at the time of sign up. Off-Board students may also attend, and their cost will be $10 at the time of sign up. Special dietary considerations will be taken into account.
Phil & Lit Society
The next meeting of the Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society will be Friday, Jan. 12, at 4 p.m., in McCoy West. The speaker is Dr. Patricia Storlie, assistant professor of biology. Her research investigates the control of certain pathogenic parasites that are transmitted to susceptible animals through the bite of a sand fly. The title is Utilizing CRISPR/Cas 9 to Knock-out the Major Surface Protease of Leishmaina tarentolae.
RICE Day deadlines
Planning is underway for the seventh annual Wartburg College RICE Day celebration on Thursday, April 12, and the Session Form (web-based: department, contact, time and location preferences, session format, setup and AV needs) deadline is Friday, Jan. 26. Faculty/department reps should submit this form, not individual students. Go to www.wartburg.edu/rice.
Recipes from Home 
Students, faculty, and staff are asked to share their favorite recipes from home to be considered for the 2018-19 Mensa menu. Recipes for entrees, salads, ethnic dishes, vegan entrees or sides, and desserts can be emailed to shelly.geweke@wartburg.edu by Friday, Jan. 26. Don’t forget to include your name and contact information for verification. Recipes chosen will be taste-tested in Mensa and the student body will vote for their favorites. Dishes that receive a “thumbs-up” will be considered for next year’s Mensa menu.
Postal rate increase
U.S. Postal Service rates will increase Jan. 21. Stamp prices will increase by 1 cent for postcards, letters, and metered mail. Package, Priority Mail, and Express Mail rates will increase by varying amounts, depending on weight and destination. More information can be found here or by contacting the Mail Center at 352-8263.
No mail on MLK Day 
There will be no incoming or outgoing postal mail Monday, Jan. 15, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The Mail Center will still be open and delivery to campus offices will be limited. Email the Mail Center or call 352-8263 for more information.

Wicked Problems Poster Challenge deadline
Wartburg College is facilitating the first Wicked Problems Poster Challenge. Gather your friends, or tackle a problem on your own! Find out more at www.wartburg.edu/incubator. Deadline for poster submissions is Jan. 15. Contact Kristin Teig Torres with any questions. Ideas with the most interest from our faculty and staff panel will be put into an incubator for the Winter Term. Don’t miss out on this opportunity!

Davis Projects for Peace deadline Jan. 15
Students with an interest in supporting and encouraging peace throughout the world should consider developing a Project for Peace. Project proposals should be creative, engaging, meaningful, and measurable. In addition, the selected Wartburg project would be implemented during the summer of 2018 and given $10,000 of funding/reward. Service trip applications 
Head out on the experience of a lifetime by serving on a service trip this year during Winter Break or Tour Week. There are various location options for each break. Applications are due in January. Click here to apply for Winter Break trips, and click here for Tour Week.
Snow removal map
As we approach the winter season, please remember to use caution when snow and ice are present on sidewalks and steps. Operations & Maintenance will remove snow and add salt or sand to icy spots on sidewalks and steps on campus according to the priority snow removal map. Parking lots will be cleared and salted or sanded as needed by a third party. 
InfoCenter navigation changes 
The dropdown menus on the InfoCenter have been eliminated to encourage viewers to click on the main menu tabs. This allows the viewer to see all the options available. You will now find all links on the main pages for each menu tab page. If you have questions about where to find information on the InfoCenter, email chris.knudson@wartburg.edu.
Inclement weather policy 
As winter approaches, the chance for severe winter weather grows more likely. For such situations, the college has a weather-related closure policy posted here. It also is linked from the front page of the Student Handbook page and the Academic Affairs website.
Postal rate increase coming
Effective Jan. 21, the cost to send a standard letter or postcard will increase by one cent, raising stamps to 50 cents and postcards to 35 cents. Package shipping prices will also increase, though prices still depend on packaging, weight, and destination. Faculty and staff are encouraged to consult with the Mail Center if interested in purchasing stamps prior to the price increase to ensure availability and confirm need.
McElroy Fellowship application deadline approaching
Seniors applying for Ph.D. programs are reminded of the R.J. McElroy Fellowship application deadline Jan. 31. One Wartburg nominee will have a 2/7 chance for the $10,000 scholarship for three years of Ph.D. graduate work through the R.J. McElroy Trust. Those interested should contact gloria.campbell@wartburg.edu for the application form. Interviews for eligible candidates will be held in early February to select the Wartburg nominee. Upcoming Chapel services

Make a New Year's resolution to join us for Chapel! Weekday services are from 10:15 to 10:35 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in Wartburg Chapel; Sunday services begin at 10:30 a.m. Weekday Chapel time is a brief opportunity to gather with students, staff, and faculty to reflect on God and faith. Interfaith chapels will be held the last Wednesday of each month during the semester. This week's schedule:

Sanctuary on Wednesdays
Expect a relaxed time of Bible study, fellowship, worship band music, prayers, and communion. Sanctuary takes place at 9 p.m. each Wednesday evening in Chapel Commons (basement). Come by at 8:45 for snacks and conversation. This is a great way to center yourself in the midst of your busy week.

Tony Frank ’81 discussed Colorado State University's presence in the new $1 billion National Western Stock Show expansion as an opportunity to engage K-12 students and help guide them toward higher education, as reported by the Denver Post

A high school injury inspired wrestler Lance Evans ’17 to pursue a biology degree at Wartburg on his way to medical school, all while wrestling at an elite level, as reported by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier. 

Basketball always has been a central part of Megan ’18, Miranda ’18 and Riley ’21 Murphy's lives. They continue to share this connection at Wartburg, as reported by the Fort Dodge Messenger.
