NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

Gospel worship — Spiritual Life and Campus Ministry, Black Student Union, and Waterloo's Antioch Baptist Church will host a Gospel worship service Sunday, Nov. 9, 10:30 a.m., in Wartburg Chapel. The Rev. Nathaniel Hilliard from Antioch Baptist will deliver the message. Music will be led by Antioch’s Gospel Choir, which includes several Wartburg alumni. #KnightOnFire 
— The second order of Outfly shirts is in! If you signed up for a shirt on Outfly, pick it up in the Student Senate office in The Hub, Saemann Student Center.

Parade contest results 
— Congratulations to KWAR for winning the Homecoming Parade Spirit Contest. The radio station earned the top prize of $200. The Wartburg Ambassadors and Students UKnight teamed up to win second place and $100. Third place and $50 went to Dance Marathon.


Reminder from registrar 
— Graduation Agreement forms for pending December 2014 and May/August 2015 graduates are due to the Registrar’s Office, Luther Hall 216, by Friday, Oct. 31. With questions, contact the Registrar’s Office at 352-8272.


Phil and Lit 
— Dr. Roy Ventullo will present Ebola and Other Disease-Causing Pathogens at the Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society meeting Friday, Oct. 31, 4 p.m., in McCoy West, Saemann Student Center.


STEM seminar 
— The next Department of Math, Computer Science & Physics seminar is Tuesday, Oct. 28, 11:30 a.m., in Science Center 134. Representatives from Iowa State University and the University of Iowa will be at the session. Students interested in graduate school in STEM fields should attend.


2015 Orange Connection
— Applications for the 2015 Orange Connection, taking place April 18–21, are due Monday, Nov. 10, 6 p.m. The Orange Connection is a career mentoring experience for students to connect with and job-shadow Wartburg alumni. Thirty students will travel to Des Moines or Chicago over Tour Week to observe responsibilities and tasks associated with a mentor’s career. Students also can discuss career topics while building their networking and interviewing skills. Bingo Knight 
— ETK's original bingo knight is Tuesday, Oct. 28, 8 p.m., in the Knights Ballrooms. All are welcome to play and compete for prizes.

Harlington Cemetery Tour
— The Wartburg College History Club and Phi Alpha Theta honor society will host their second annual Harlington Cemetery Tour Sunday, Nov. 2. Walk amongst the graves with Terry Lindell, professor of history, as he shares stories of Waverly’s past residents and points out fascinating details about burial traditions of bygone years. Tours begin at 1 and 3 p.m. Visit the Humanities Office on the third floor of Luther Hall to sign up and prepay the $5 admission. Transportation to the cemetery will be provided. Social Work course openings 
 — As you review your schedule for Winter and May terms, consider these courses offered through the Social Work Department:
• Winter Term — SW 250-02 Current Topics in Social Work Practice: Veterans and Military Families (T H 1-2:40 p.m.) addresses understanding of war, combat, and readjustment issues through working with military families. Students will help train service dogs with Retrieving Freedom, Inc.
• May 2015 — SW 104 Basic American Sign Language (M-F 12:30-3:30 p.m.) introduces American Sign Language and the primary users of this language. Students will learn to carry on a basic conversation in ASL and acquire an understanding of the deaf community as a cultural minority. Meets DAC requirement.

Vocation event 
— Students are encouraged to attend as Dan ‘95 and Jennifer Digmann share their message, Despite MS, to Spite MS, Thursday, Oct. 30, 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m., in Science Center Room 102. The Digmanns have battled multiple sclerosis (MS) for more than 30 years combined and have pursued their calling despite the challenges. This event is sponsored by Human Resources & Payroll, Pathways Center, and the Diversity and Inclusion Council. Advising Week
— Advising Week is Monday, Oct. 27, through Friday, Oct. 31. First-year students are required to meet with their adviser, and all students are encouraged to do so. Check with your adviser to sign up for an appointment. Beyond confirming or adjusting Winter/May term schedules, this is a great opportunity to get to know your adviser, talk about your major and where it might lead you, and plan for long-term options such as study abroad, Wartburg West, internships, etc.  


Homecoming wrap-up 
— Re-live Homecoming 2014 through a photo album and Knight Vision videos of Kastle Kapers and the Homecoming concert. 


Campaign launched
 — A surprise announcement of a $2 million challenge grant from campaign steering committee co-chairs Michael and Marge McCoy highlighted Friday's gala to launch the Transforming Tomorrow comprehensive campaign. The campaign's $75 million goal includes $37 million to ensure student access, $14 million to enhance student living and learning, $16 million for programs enabling student success and $8 million for the annual fund. To that end $53.9 million in gifts and commitments was secured during the campaign's leadership phase, which began in June 2012. — Congratulations to the winners of the window painting contest for Homecoming:

  • First place: Res 106 
  • Second place: Cornils Manor 13 and 14
  • Third place: Grossmann 218 and Grossmann 118 

More than 15 rooms participated. Thanks to these groups and the Center for Community Engagement, winner of the office decorating contest, for sharing homecoming spirit!


Scary stories
 — "They won't stay dead!" is the theme for the 2014 Scary Writing Contest, sponsored by the Castle and the Writing, Reading, and Speaking Lab. Submissions must be under 2,000 words and contain the phrase, "he/she/they won't stay dead." The winner will receive a $50 gift card to The Wartburg Store and be published in the fall edition of the Castle. Send submissions to castle@wartburg.edu by Friday, Oct. 31.
