NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

Campaign launched — A surprise announcement of a $2 million challenge grant from campaign steering committee co-chairs Michael and Marge McCoy highlighted Friday's gala to launch the Transforming Tomorrow comprehensive campaign. The campaign's $75 million goal includes $37 million to ensure student access, $14 million to enhance student living and learning, $16 million for programs enabling student success and $8 million for the annual fund. To that end $53.9 million in gifts and commitments was secured during the campaign's leadership phase, which began in June 2012. Homecoming wrap-up — Re-live Homecoming 2014 through a photo album and Knight Vision videos of Kastle Kapers and the Homecoming concert.

Fall Break — The first break of the academic year comes this week. Classes are off Thursday and Friday, Oct. 23-24, and resume Monday, Oct. 27.

STEM seminar — The next Department of Math, Computer Science & Physics seminar is Tuesday, Oct. 28, 11:30 a.m., in Science Center 134. Representatives from Iowa State University and the University of Iowa will be at the session. Students interested in graduate school in STEM fields should attend.

Contest winners — Congratulations to the winners of the window painting contest for Homecoming:

  • First place: Res 106 
  • Second place: Cornils Manor 13 and 14
  • Third place: Grossmann 218 and Grossmann 118 

More than 15 rooms participated. Thanks to these groups and the Center for Community Engagement, winner of the office decorating contest, for sharing homecoming spirit!

Development series event — RSVP by Thursday, Oct. 23, for a Fall Professional Development Series event Thursday, Oct. 30, 9-10:30 a.m., in Science Center 102. Dan '95 and Jennifer Digmann have battled multiple sclerosis for more than 30 years combined. Their inspiring message, Create a Culture of Inclusion, will center on how they cope. RSVP to tracy.keller@wartburg.edu or 352-8394. The series is sponsored by Human Resources & Payroll, Pathways Center, and the Diversity and Inclusion Council.

The Saint John's Bible volunteers — Volunteers are needed to serve as Knights of the Page (docents) for The Saint John's Bible, the handwritten, hand-illuminated Bible on display at Vogel Library through December. Contact Gail Sexton for more information at gail.sexton@wartburg.edu or 352-8699. 

Student art displayed — The student art display in the Waverly McDonald’s features new works by Megan Howe ’16, ceramics and photography; Lauren Matysik ’15, photography; and Christa Kain ’16, ceramics.

Advising Week upcoming — First-year students are required to meet with advisers during Advising Week, Oct. 27-31. Let advisees know how to sign up or schedule appointments with you. The goal of Advising Week goes beyond schedule confirmation/adjustment for Winter and May terms; it is an opportunity to advise students on study strategies, discuss long-term goals and career plans, and plan ahead for Wartburg West, internships, and study abroad. Advisers are expected to invite advisees who received mid-term D/F notices to discuss strategies for academic success and make referrals to the appropriate support services. The second seven-week courses start Monday, Oct. 20, and Wednesday, Nov. 5, is the last day to drop a full-term course with a W. A few seats are available in LS 110: Exploring Careers and Vocation

Class size report — Enrollment Management has released the Fall 2014 Average Class Size Report. The current average of 20.6 students per class section is the third-lowest in the last 10 years. For class subsections, which include primarily labs, the average size drops to 18.46 students — the lowest average in that category since at least 2005.

Benefit open enrollment — The open enrollment period for 2015 benefits is Nov. 1-26. Benefit-eligible employees re-electing coverage under one of Wartburg's plans or re-electing a flexible spending account must re-enroll at www.mybenefitfusion.com during this period. Your username is your last name, and your password is the last four digits of your Social Security Number. The PPO and MCO plans have been significantly revised, while the HSA plan is unchanged. Those seeking benefit information can meet with representatives from The Accel Group Thursday, Nov. 6, 8-11 a.m.; Friday, Nov. 7, noon-2 p.m.; and Tuesday, Nov. 11, 3-5 p.m., in McCoy East. 

Service award nominations — Applications are due Wednesday, Nov. 12, for two awards to be bestowed during St. Elizabeth Week, Nov. 15-21. Nominate a student for the St. Elizabeth Award for Service here and a faculty or staff member for the Pastor Larry Trachte Award for Service here. Recipients will be recognized during chapel Wednesday, Nov. 19.
