NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS



Opening Convocation — The Wartburg community comes together to open the academic year Tuesday, Sept. 8, 10:15 a.m., in Levick Arena. The Rev. Sherman Hicks, a member of the Wartburg Board of Regents since 2009, is the featured speaker. The college will bestow the Wartburg Medal upon William Waltmann ’56. All faculty and staff are encouraged to attend to welcome the Class of 2019. Click here to read more.


"Home for the Knight" — Register now for Homecoming and Family Weekend 2015 at www.wartburg.edu/homecoming. Because Homecoming is early this year — Oct. 1-4 — please remind everyone you know (alumni, parents, friends, students, faculty, and staff) to register as soon as possible. New edition of the Trumpet
— A special edition of the Trumpet is available on campus newsstands. Copies of Axiom, the Trumpet’s feature magazine, also are available. Back-to-school sale
— The Wartburg Store will have a back-to-school sale Sept. 16-17, 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m., in the McCoy rooms of Saemen Student Center. For more information, visit http://www.wartburgstore.com/.


Large event
– Singer, songwriter, and record producer Andy Grammer will perform at Wartburg Friday, Oct. 23, as Entertainment ToKnight's 2015 Large Event. The concert will begin at 8 p.m. in Neumann Auditorium and feature singer Aaron Carter as the opening act. Tickets will be available exclusively to Wartburg students for $5 on the following dates:

  • Monday, Sept. 14, 6 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2-7 p.m., Neumann Auditorium lobby
  • Tuesday, Sept. 15, 8 a.m.-7 p.m., Information Desk, Saemann Student Center
  • Additional dates to be announced soon

Beginning Monday, Sept. 21, students, faculty, and staff (with a Wartburg ID) can purchase tickets for $10. Beginning Monday, Sept. 28, all remaining tickets will be available to the public for $20. Questions can be directed to etk@wartburg.edu.

Website enhancements underway — The transition to make the InfoCenter the new portal for all internal audiences (current students, faculty, and staff) began over the summer. Office websites for these audiences are now housed on this site. This includes Registrar, Pathways, Student Life, Marketing & Communication, Security, and many others. This change is part of a larger strategic initiative that will make the www.wartburg.edu website interface work better for outside audiences (prospective students, alumni, community, etc.). A major redesign of the external website is currently underway and should be released sometime in the fall. Questions should be directed to Chris Knudson, director of creative strategy, at chris.knudson@wartburg.edu.


Ceramic art exhibit
 — Iowa City ceramic artist Eliza Au will use geometry to explore mankind’s place in the cycle of life in the first exhibit of the 2015-16 season in the Waldemar A. Schmidt Art Gallery. Frame of Reference will run Thursday, Sept. 10 through Sunday, Oct. 25. An opening reception featuring a gallery talk by Au will be Saturday, Sept. 12, 2-4 p.m. Click here to read more.


All-sport passes available
— Free all-sports passes are available for family members of full-time employees. To obtain passes, please visit Cathi Duitsman, Athletics Office coordinator, in The W. 


Graduation report available
 — The Enrollment Management Office has released the 2014-15 Graduation Summary Report. Highlights include:

  • The class of 359 students comprised 297 May graduates, 35 December graduates, and 27 August graduates.
  • Thirty-nine percent of the graduates completed an internship—the highest percentage since the Class of 2009.
  • Business administration was the most popular field for majors (71), followed by biology (60) and communication arts (37).
  • Ninety-five students earned the leadership certification minor.


German expert available Oct. 20-23 
— A German education official will be available to visit with professors and classes Tuesday, Oct. 20 through Friday, Oct. 23. Udo Michallik, the secretary general of the Conference of Education Ministers of the German States, can address issues such as Germany 25 years after reunification, Holocaust education in Germany, basics of German politics, and current challenges for Germany and Europe. He also is a resource on exploring and establishing relationships with educational institutions of all levels in Germany. Michallik will give this year’s Kleinfeld Lecture in German History, Culture, and Politics Thursday, Oct. 22, 7:30 p.m., in McCaskey Lyceum. — A transcript of President Colson's year-opening remarks, Back to the Future: 1977, is available on the President's Reports page of the InfoCenter. Colson gave the remarks Tuesday in Wartburg Chapel.


New Title IX policy, training
 — All staff must complete an online training module on Title IX-related issues by Oct. 1. Staff were emailed log-in instructions Aug. 27. Click here to access the training module. Questions about the policy or training modules can be addressed to Jamie Hollaway, director of human resources and payroll and Title IX coordinator, in Luther Hall 203 or at jamie.hollaway@wartburg.edu.


Data needed for new printer setup
 – ITS will roll out new printers, replacing Equitrac with Papercut. As part of the setup process, managers are asked to email a list of the billing code(s) your department uses to print to June Rieck, technology manager, at june.rieck@wartburg.edu. Please use “Billing Codes” as the subject line. This is the account number you presently input in the “Print Assistant” window.


Calling potential mentors
– Faculty and staff mentors have an opportunity to serve those new to campus within the last year through the Staff Mentoring Program. Mentoring pairs are encouraged to meet once a month to familiarize new staff with Wartburg, its mission, and how their position fits into the mission. Additionally, mentoring pairs can share personal and professional goals. Professors showcased at Bach’s Lunch
– Karen Black, professor of music, and Jacob Tews, visiting assistant professor of music, will perform Friday, Sept. 11, 12:30 p.m., in Wartburg Chapel for the first Bach's Lunch program of the academic year. The recital, featuring music for the organ and viola, will be preceded by a noon lunch and explanation of the program in Chapel Commons. Attendees are invited to bring a lunch or order one by Wednesday, Sept. 9, by contacting Marcia Haugen, music department office coordinator, at marcia.haugen@wartburg.edu or 352-8300.


Symphony conductor leads Keep on Learning
 — Jason Weinberger of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony will discuss the social history of music at the Keep on Learning community education series. Weinberger, the symphony’s conductor, artistic director, and CEO, will explore Music through the Ages, tracing the evolution of the orchestra against the backdrop of social and political dynamics from the 16th century through the present. The class meets Thursday mornings, Sept. 10, 17, and 24 in the Heritage Room of Saemann Student Center. Coffee will be served at 9 a.m., followed by the class from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Click here to read more.


Wartburg Community Symphony tickets
 — Wartburg Community Symphony memberships and tickets are now available for the 2015-16 season featuring four concerts in Neumann Auditorium.

  • Saturday, Oct. 3, 8 p.m.: Autumn Ovation Homecoming concert featuring pianist Sean Boktin performing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2. 
  • Sunday, Dec. 13, 3 p.m.: Holiday Classics concert featuring seasonal favorites.
  • Saturday, Feb. 13, 7:30 p.m.: High school students from around the region will collaborate with the symphony for the Meistersinger Honor Orchestra Festival.
  • Saturday, April 11, 7:30 p.m.: A Night at the Opera concert featuring Wartburg voice faculty.
