NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS
Supporting a professor — Two events will raise funds to support Michael Jensen '96, professor of voice, as he undergoes chemotherapy and radiation to fight an inoperable brain tumor diagnosed in February. A concert Saturday, May 9, 8 p.m., at The Pour House, will feature acoustic rock band 48 Hour Notice and blues trio Wishbry 3. Members include Jordan Wildermuth '09, Aaron Schutte '09, Bryan Odeen '09, and Bill Grant '97. Donations will be accepted, and employees will donate their tips. On Saturday, May 16, Hope Overflow will host Day of J on the campus mall starting at 1 p.m. The benefit will feature music from Hope Overflow and Andrew Hoyt '17, a silent auction, a cake walk, games, face painting, and more. You also can donate and read updates through the family's online fundraising page and buy "Team Mike" T-shirts online.
FCA to host Thomas — Aplington-Parkersburg High School principal and boys basketball coach Aaron Thomas, son of the late Aplington-Parkersburg football coach Ed Thomas, will speak at a Fellowship of Christian Athletes event tonight, May 7, 8 p.m., in Levick Arena.
Auditorium work begins — Installation of a new acoustical sound system in Neumann Auditorium begins today, May 7. Work is expected to continue through Aug. 1. Access will be restricted. Because of this project, the May 24 Baccalaureate service will be in The W's Hoover Fieldhouse & Track.
Otto Trust makes gift — The Ralph E. Otto Trust has provided Wartburg with its largest-ever estate gift, a $4 million contribution. The gift includes $3 million that will be added to the Professor A.W. Swensen Regents Scholarship, which Ralph and his wife, Diane, created in 1983. The remaining $1 million will benefit the college’s Transforming Tomorrow campaign. Otto, a 1963 graduate, was a skilled cardiothoracic surgeon in the Chicago area and served on the Wartburg College Board of Regents from 1992 until his death in 2008. Click here to read more.
Athletes in the spotlight — Outstanding athletic achievements and performances from 2014-15 will be honored at the Golden Knight Awards Monday, May 18, 7 p.m., in McCaskey Lyceum. All are invited. Food Olympics hits campus — Get your friends together for the Food Olympics on the campus mall today, May 7, 5:30 p.m. Games will include macaroni art, bagel bags, a greased watermelon relay, a donut-eating contest, and the dish line slide. Participate in three games for a chance to win the grand prize, a $50 Wal-Mart gift card.

Service of blessing and thanksgiving — All are invited to a service of blessing and thanksgiving for the Class of 2015 Saturday, May 23, 5 p.m., in Wartburg Chapel. Dr. Daniel Black, Department of Biochemistry, Chemistry & Engineering Science chair, will give the message, and Paris White ’15 will give the testimony. Hope Overflow and Dr. Karen Black will provide music. Communion will be served, and the attire is casual.
Support for earthquake victims — Spiritual Life & Campus Ministry encourages prayer and monetary donations for those suffering from the earthquake that struck Nepal April 25. Offerings from May Term worship will go to Lutheran Disaster Response, an ELCA ministry that works with local and international groups to supply immediate and long-term support. Donations also can be made online.
Student research project honored — The work of Mauricio Leon ‘15, Alexandra Mehmen ‘14, and Kieran Cullen ‘15 received honors at the TriBeta National Biological Honor Society North Central District 3 Conference in Iowa City last month. Leon's environmental science senior research project poster, Differences in Biodiversity and Species Richness of Invertebrates in Remnant Prairies and Diversified Organic Farms in Iowa, took third place in the John C. Johnson Award for Excellence in Student Research. Leon and his co-authors were advised by Dr. Johanna Foster, associate professor of biology. Leon and Foster attended the conference April 17-18 as part of the 127th annual meeting of the Iowa Academy of Science.
