St. Elizabeth Week continues

In honor of St. Elizabeth, who devoted her life to service in the 13th century, the campus community devotes a week in November to focus on service. Click here to read more about the history of St. Elizabeth and her connection to Wartburg Castle in Germany.

The week's events:

Monday-Tuesday, Nov. 16-17: St. Elizabeth Roses for $3 each

Purchase roses for a friend or a special someone to continue the magic of St. Elizabeth Week. Tabling for roses will be during dinner on Nov. 16 and 17. Those who receive roses will be notified and will be able to pick them up at the Info Desk.

Monday, Nov. 16: Webinar and Games, 6:30-7 p.m.

Here’s another opportunity to learn more about St. Elizabeth. Enjoy games and trivia for a chance to win prizes after the webinar! Join via Zoom at this link.

Wednesday, Nov. 18: St. Elizabeth Chapel Service, 10:15 a.m.

The day’s chapel message will focus on St. Elizabeth and her legacy at Wartburg. Gather as we honor those being awarded the Pastor Trachte Award and the St. Elizabeth Award for Service. Also, come to see the winner of Coins for a Cause.

Course materials deadline is Tuesday

The course materials adoption deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 17, for the 2021 Winter Term. More than two-thirds of faculty have already submitted course adoptions via the portal for next term. Your support of the course adoption process is beneficial to our students:

To allow time to order early to avoid delays with deliveries. Logistic delays in shipping are expected until the end of the year due to COVID.
Support stipulations of the Higher Education Opportunities Act (HEOA) that students should have access to course material information as early as possible.
Adoptions available via the portal allows students to charge to their tuition account.

The course adoption portal link is www.Wartburg.Textbookx.com. Use your Wartburg-issued ID and password to access your class information. Questions may be directed to jmoise@akademos.com or janet.huebner@wartburg.edu.

Friendship Families needed for international students

The International Student Services Office is in need of participants in its Friendship Families Program through which staff/faculty, as well as local residents, interact with our new international students. Currently, eight students are planning to arrive in January. The program does not involve housing students or require a financial commitment; participants simply spend time together and keep in touch. It is a great way to experience new cultures, share your own, and contribute to the Wartburg community. The students arriving are from Ecuador, Jordan, eSwatini, El Salvador, India, Russia, and Zambia. If you would like to learn more, check out the this link, and if interested, complete the interest form. If you have questions, contact Wendy Mohlis at ext. 8745 or wendy.mohlis@wartburg.edu.

Join the 200-mile run-walk challenge

This winter, the Alumni office is bringing together members of the Wartburg community for another virtual race: Walking in a Wartburg Wonderland. Our last race was a success, so we're calling on you to take on this new challenge with the same enthusiasm! The challenge is 200 miles to be completed between Nov. 18 and Feb. 28—that's a little over two miles each day of walking, running, snowshoeing, or another comparable activity. Proceeds from the race will benefit the Holiday Shoppe program. All ages and abilities are welcome. Cost is $30. Click here for details and to register.

Operations and maintenance response time update

The college’s operations and maintenance staff is currently short-staffed, in part because of unfilled positions. While these searches are underway the campus community can expect:

A reduction in the cleaning services provided in some areas of campus.
Increased response times for non-emergency maintenance requests.
Reduced grounds maintenance.

Staff will continue to focus their efforts on emergency and virus mitigation cleaning tasks. The O&M staff appreciate your patience during this time.

Projects for Peace proposal deadline

The Davis Projects for Peace program provides an opportunity for undergraduates to design grassroots projects that they will implement during the summer of 2020. The projects judged to be the most promising and feasible will be funded at $10,000 each. The objective is to encourage and support today's motivated youth to create and try out their own ideas for building peace. Wartburg students wishing to submit a Davis Projects for Peace proposal must submit their application using this link by noon Jan. 11, 2021. Click here for a Word doc with details. For more information, contact Kristin Teig Torres.

'Sacred Steps' exhibit in art gallery

“Sacred Steps,” featuring the work of Melissa Airy, is on display at the Waldemar A. Schmidt Art Gallery now through Dec. 18. A performance and gallery talk will be scheduled at a later time. “Sacred Steps” is a visual representation of Airy’s personal experiences as a sojourner to various sacred landscapes in an attempt to understand the profound sense of purpose and awakening she encountered along the way. Through performance, installation, video and audio, Airy translates her experiences into immersive works of art that are easily accessible to the secular world. The gallery is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the first floor of the Bachman Fine Arts Center. The exhibit is free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.wartburg.edu/gallery.

PROFESSIONAL NEWS

Dr. Alpha Woodward, director of music therapy, gave the keynote address at the Atlantic Association of Music Therapy Conference, titled “The Mostar Story: Music Therapy as a Humanitarian Service in a Contemporary World.” The Music Therapy Program funded by Warchild UK and Warchild NL was one of the few consistent psychosocial support services available to the children and youth in the years following Balkan wars of the 1990s. Dr. Woodward shared the vision and scope of the nine-year Music Therapy Program in Mostar, the complex challenges of providing therapy to traumatized individuals in uncertain and ambiguous times, and a broader perspective of music therapy as a humanitarian service in a messy contemporary world.

On Monday, Oct. 26, Dr. Stephanie TeKippe and Dr. Maryam Rod Szabo presented at the national Quality Matters Conference. The presentation was titled “QM Conference Building Templates to Improve Faculty and Students Experience, Collaboration, and Engagement.” There were 100 attendees, which was the maximum number, and a discussion regarding continuation of our work is taking place.

Dr. Caryn Riswold, professor of religion and McCoy Family Distinguished Chair in Lutheran Heritage and Mission, has been elected to a second four-year term on the National Board of the Lilly Fellows Program.
