Friday, January 31, 2020 / Categories: News The Juice - Jan. 30 View in browser Jan. 30, 2020 Mock caucus tonight A mock presidential caucus, co-sponsored by Student Senate, will be held in the St. Elizabeth Room in Saemann Student Center tonight, Jan. 30, beginning at 7 p.m. The event is open to the public; you do not need to be registered to vote or be of voting age to attend. The event is designed for anyone who wants to learn about Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucus. Topics include the purpose of a caucus, how a caucus differs from a primary, and the importance of the Iowa Caucus. Participants will also learn how to find their caucus sites and how they can register to attend the Feb. 3 presidential caucus. Participants will then be led through the workings of an actual caucus as they caucus for their favorite planet. Because of the interest in the Democratic party caucus this year and the rather complex math calculations used, the “planetary” mock caucus will use the procedures of the Democratic party caucus. Although this event will not promote any particular candidate, presidential campaigns active in Iowa have been invited to have tables and provide information about the various candidates. Information about Monday's Iowa Caucuses The Iowa Caucuses begin promptly at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3. You must be registered to vote and must be registered with the party with which you will caucus (show up early to register for a party or to change your party registration on the night of the caucus). Bring your ID with you and proof of residency. At both the Democratic and Republican caucuses, non-voting observers are also welcome to attend. The two parties have different locations and procedures: The Democratic Caucus has multiple locations in Waverly, depending on where you live. Students who live in the Manors or Knights Village (north of Fifth Avenue NW) are in Waverly Ward 5; the Democratic Caucus site for Ward 5 is the Waverly-Shell Rock High School Auditorium. Students who live in all other residence halls on campus are in Waverly Ward 3. The Waverly Ward 3 Democratic Caucus site is the St. Elizabeth Room on the second floor of Saemann Student Center. Click here to see the Waverly Ward map if you live off-campus. Doors open at 6 p.m. Please bring a pen to fill out the presidential preference card.
