Phil & Lit Society meeting The next meeting of the Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society is Friday, Oct. 25, at 4 p.m. in McCoy West of the Saemann Student Center. The speaker is Dr. Amy Pilcher, assistant professor of business administration, accounting and economics. She will be presenting a paper titled, “Online Course Development: Creating a Community of Inquiry.” Mail must have name and box number The Mail Center would like to remind students, faculty, and staff to include name and box number or department when placing online orders. Multiple packages are received every week with no clear recipient, causing a delay or inability to deliver those items. Those persons with overdue or missing packages are encouraged to contact the Mail Center with the tracking number of the missing item to determine whether it was delivered without a name. 2 German music ensembles come to campus The public is invited to two free concerts featuring acclaimed music ensembles from Germany: • The Windsbacher Knabenchor (Windsbach Boys Choir) will perform Sunday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m., in the Wartburg Chapel. The 50-voice choir is considered one of the leading ensembles of its kind with a musical focus on sacred music and a repertoire ranging from the Renaissance to the modern day. The Wartburg Choir also will be featured during the concert. Details at this link. • The Karlsruhe Concert Duo will perform Monday, Oct. 28, at 8 p.m. in the Sandra Rada Orchestra Hall in Bachman Fine Arts Center. Cellist Reinhard Armleder and pianist Dagmar Hartmann regularly earn high praise with profound and captivating interpretations, brilliant technique and imaginative programming. Happy reading! — Dr. Dan Walther PROFESSIONAL NEWS Dr. Lucy Barnhouse, visiting assistant professor of history, presented her paper, “Text, Subtext, Paratext: The Liber Extra and the Late Medieval Hospital,” at the annual meeting of the Mid-America Medieval Association on Sept. 15. Dr. Caryn D. Riswold, professor of religion and the Mike & Marge McCoy Family Distinguished Chair in Lutheran Heritage and Mission, has published an article in the Fall 2019 issue of the journal Intersections, titled "The Vocation of White People in a Racist Society." It is part of the collected work that emerged out of the July 2019 Vocation of a Lutheran College Conference. The 19 students of SCI 385 (Elementary Science Methods) plus Hannah James and Jennifer Wiley attended the 2019 ISTS Fall Conference in Ankeny on Oct. 7. Dr. Terry Lindell, professor of history, presented his paper entitled “Letters from Camp: World War I Soldiers Write Home to Bremer County, Iowa” at the 54th Annual Northern Great Plains History Conference in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada. Lindell was also awarded this year’s Larry Rowan Remele Award, which is given for significant contributions to the betterment of the conference. After more than 20 years as the head of Hudson’s police department and a total of 36 years in law enforcement, Jeff Marsh '85 has retired, with his career recounted by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier. The extensive list of academic and athletic accomplishments of Kolin Schulte ’20 were recounted by a columnist for the Anamosa Journal-Eureka. Angela Weekley ’96 talks about her role promoting diversity and inclusion in the community and in her professional life at Veridian Credit Union with the Cedar Rapids Gazette.
