Women's basketball advances to Sweet Sixteen

Our women's basketball team beat Baldwin Wallace 57-43 on Friday and defeated Hope College 81-67 on Saturday to advance to the Sweet Sixteen round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Knights will next face Christopher Newport at 4 p.m. Central on Friday, March 10. Congratulations to the team on its success so far!

May term balances due March 10

Students, a reminder that Winter Term balances were due Feb. 10, and May Term balances are due March 10. Your account balance must be $2,500 or less to register for classes for the 2023-24 academic year; registration begins March 13. If you have a monthly payment plan and your payments are current, you will be cleared to register. If you need to explore payment options, schedule a time to meet with the Financial Aid Office or Business Office.

Esports team headed to new home

Classroom Technology Center rooms 200 and 201 are being remodeled as a new practice and competition space for our esports teams. The work, funded by gifts from donors, has already started and is anticipated to be complete by the end of July. Be sure to check out the team; all their competitions are livestreamed on Knight Vision.

ITS Techline changes hours, availability
Effective today, the main ITS office will close at 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and will be closed Sunday. However, student workers will be available at Vogel Library to assist with urgent IT-related issues from 4 p.m. to close Sunday and from 7 p.m. to close Monday through Thursday. Complex issues may require help from full-time staff on the following business day. Contact the Techline at 319-353-8767 or techline@wartburg.edu with questions or concerns.
Join a service trip during Tour Week
Grab a friend and sign up for the best break of your life from April 22-29. This is a great opportunity to give back to a new community, travel, and have fun. Cost is $200 and includes all meals, lodging, and transportation. Locations will be announced soon on the Service Trips Instagram. The group will table during lunch today and Wednesday, March 8.
Equipment, tech budget requests due March 22

Requests for equipment and technology needs for fiscal year 2023-24 are now being accepted. This annual process allows faculty and staff to submit requests for funding to purchase equipment and technology in excess of $1,000. All submissions should be sent to zach.drape@wartburg.edu. The deadline for submission is March 22.

Vogel Library publishes March newsletter

The latest edition of The Searching Squirrel, Vogel Library’s newsletter, is now available. It includes news about new databases, a light therapy lamp for checkout, and mini golf in the library.

Mini Golf in Vogel Library

6 to 8 p.m., Vogel Library service desk

Join library staff for a fun-filled evening and nine holes of golf as you explore the library spaces. Begin your tour on the second floor at the service desk. Snacks will be provided, with golf clubs generously provided by the city of Waverly’s Parks and Recreation Department.

Deadline: Senate leadership scholarship applications

Wartburg Student Senate and the Leadership Education Service Committee are taking applications for two $500 scholarships. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, be entering their third or fourth year at Wartburg, and be a leader in a campus organization. Interested students should submit an application as well as a recommendation from a faculty or staff member. Applications are due by 3 p.m. March 8. Peru 2024 May Term Trip Information Meeting

Dr. Michael Bechtel and students that traveled to South America in 2022 will answer questions about the 2024 travel course, BI 214 Ecology and Culture of the Amazon. Presenters will explain costs, expectations, itinerary, citizen science opportunities, and service work through a slide show and question-and-answer session.

Please meet with your executive team to fill out the form in as much detail as possible. Self-Defense for Girls and Women

This course will be taught in two sessions, with the second session on March 27. Attendees will learn simple, effective skills that may help you prevent or survive an assault. Participants also will learn awareness, assertiveness, safety strategies, and how to use simple techniques on vulnerable areas of the body. The class will be taught by Joe Edwards, and the cost is $30.

‘Monumental Mysteries’ Artist Talk & Gallery Reception

The exhibition “Monumental Mysteries” by Robert Kennon is on display through March 24. Kennon explores the prehistoric monoliths, megaliths, memoirs, dolmens, and henges through sketches made during numerous trips to England. The reception is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.

CONDOLENCES

 

Our sympathies to the family and friends of the Rev. Bob Gremmels, who died Feb. 28 at age 94. Gremmels was the great-great-grandson of Wartburg founder Georg Grossmann, and he graduated from Wartburg in 1952. Gremmels later returned to the college as staff in 1960, became an assistant professor of journalism in 1972, and retired in 1994. He was awarded an Alumni Citation in 1970 and the Wartburg Medal in 2014. Services are at 1:30 p.m. today in the Chapel. See the full obituary.

A trial subscription to Art Song Transposition has been made available to the Wartburg community. This trial runs until May 15.
On-campus positions available for student workers

There are open student worker positions across campus, including these two jobs:

 

Help Desk Consultation I, ITS
This position is responsible for first level technical support. Students will create help desk tickets and perform daily computer lab checks.

 

Circulation Desk Assistant I, Vogel Library
This position is responsible for welcoming visitors to the library and providing the first line of customer service at the circulation desk. Additionally, students will assist in maintaining the library collection and help make the library's spaces and services inclusive.

Service Trips hiring exec team members

Service Trips is hiring new executive team members for the 2023-24 school year. Positions include director of marketing, director of finances, director of student recruitment, and director of fundraising. Achievements and accomplishments

IINspire sent two students, Hidaly Hernandez '23 and Robby Munoz '24, to the IINspire Annual Conference in Iowa City to present research posters. Additionally, students Bert Cortez '25, Izzy Gomes '25, Mia Lopez '26, Jennifer Miranda '23, and Zee Naba '26 attended the conference. Dr. LeAnn Faidley and Dr. Michaeleen Golay accompanied students. Sessions on inclusive mentoring, preparing for graduate programs, and alumni panels provided professional development and community building for students and faculty.
