Classes shortened Jan. 16 for MLK Day
|
There will be a condensed class schedule Monday, Jan. 16, so students, faculty, and staff can participate in MLK Day of Service activities (see Campus Calendar below for details).

Take-out meals available from Mensa
|
Free reusable take-out containers are available to be used in Mensa for students with a board plan. To participate, pick up your first container in the Dining Services Office between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Menstrual products available in residence hall bathrooms
|
|
Residential Life has supplied free menstrual products in all female bathrooms within residence halls. There are a variety of different products for students to choose from. There is an additional box of products inside the Hub (near the games). If you notice supplies are running low, please contact your RA for them to be refilled.

Request event and classroom space online
|
Event space and classroom reservations can now be submitted at www.wartburg.edu/conferences. Submissions go directly to Kayla Seppelt, event planning manager. Please note that submitting a request does not automatically guarantee the space; confirmation will come from the Astra system.

Books chosen for winter Hearthside Project
|
The Hearthside Project offers faculty and students the unique opportunity to connect outside the formality of the classroom by reading and discussing a book together. Students receive their books free of charge. Reading groups consist of one book leader and three students. To apply, email the leader of the book you’re interested in discussing:

Win free travel for service trips
|
Sign up now to participate in a service trip during Winter Break. A free trip will be given away for every 15 people who sign up this week! Service Trips will table in the Student Center from 8 to 10 a.m. today with Pop-Tarts and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday with stickers. There will also be a pizza party in the Hub from 8 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Stop by any of these events to learn more about service trips and win giveaways.

Postal rates to increase Jan. 22
|
USPS will charge more for stamps, package shipping, certified mail, meter mail, and other bulk mail services beginning Sunday, Jan. 22. Please contact the Mail Center by Thursday, Jan. 19, if planning to purchase more than 100 stamps in advance of the rate increase to ensure inventory to meet your needs. General rate increases are:

Regular first-class letters up to 1 ounce ("forever" stamps): $0.60 to $0.63 |

Metered first-class letters up to 1 ounce: $0.57 to $0.60 |

Postcard rate (meter or stamped): $0.44 to $0.48 |

The Alumni & Parent Engagement Office would love to know when you invite alumni back to campus to engage with students. If you are requesting swag bags for alumni speakers, please include their first and last names.

New vendor selected for business card orders
|
The Plus is now the selected vendor for Wartburg business cards. Office coordinators and administrative assistants can place orders now. Please note that admission and athletic recruiters should continue to work through their account executives.
All other stationery products like letterhead will continue to be ordered through PrintShop Pro and the Print Center. Letterhead can be printed as needed or on demand with a letter at the same time. In either case, please do not assume product is available at any given time. Supply chain issues continue to be a challenge, so planning ahead in these matters is appreciated.

Winter vehicle tips from Wartburg Security

Cold winter weather can wreak havoc on your engine, battery, and tires. Proper precautions need to be taken for your safety. Check the air level in your tires, have your battery recharged if needed, and keep your car refueled so you can run the engine and stay warm in an emergency.

Curious about the 12th annual TriByKnight Triathlon on May 6, the 12-week triathlon class starting Feb. 15, or the triathlon swim clinic on Jan. 28? This free class will focus on teaching the basics of what the TriByKnight Triathlon is all about, along with tips and tricks to better prepare yourself for the upcoming race. Participants will bike and run but not swim. Show up in workout clothes and shoes with a great attitude to learn more about triathlons. Advance registration is not required.

Music therapy fourth-year Hanna Peterson was one of three undergraduates in the nation to give a poster presentation at the National Opera Conference in Houston this month. Her presentation, “Analysis of 21st Century Opera Through the LGBTQIA+ Lens: An Exploration of the Operas ‘As One’ and ‘Sweets By Kate’” examines gender and sexuality within two modern operas, as well as the role they can play in enlightening the operatic community to the LGBTQIA+ experience. Peterson is advised by music professors Dr. Molly Doran and Dr. Kylie T. Gougler. |

Hannah Hart, a 2020 neuroscience and biology graduate, published the research from her senior research project this fall. Stephanie Toering Peters, her faculty mentor at Wartburg, was a co-author, as well as collaborators at GlycoScience Research and the University of South Dakota. The paper, “The cytoprotective role of GM1 ganglioside in Huntington disease cells,” appeared in the September issue of Molecular Biology Reports. |

He presented a paper, "Learning Counterinsurgency: America's Indian Wars and the Occupation of the Philippines," and he chaired an author-meets-critics roundtable on a recent book, “Beyond the Wire: U.S. Military Deployments and Host Country Public Opinion.” |

IINspire sent computer science major Isiana Carr-Coleman to the AfroTech conference in Austin, Texas, in November. AfroTech is the largest Black tech conference of the year with programming on emerging trends, networking opportunities with industry leaders, and conversations with top tech recruiters. |

Dr. Tammy Faux, professor of social work, was elected to a three-year term as a program director for the board of the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors. A national association, BPD represents the interests of undergraduate education and practice in social work. |
