Football wins conference title, cross country headed to nationals
|
The Wartburg football team finished the regular season undefeated and claimed the American Rivers Conference title with a 19-14 victory over Coe on Saturday. The team will play the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse at noon Saturday, Nov. 19, at Walston-Hoover Stadium in the first round of the NCAA playoffs.
In other sports news, the women's cross country team won the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship and received an automatic bid to the national championships this weekend in East Lansing, Mich. The men's team placed second and received an at-large bid.
The women's soccer team won its first-round game in the NCAA tournament over Grinnell but lost in the second round to Washington University in St. Louis.

Symphony, gallery hold joint art competition
|
The Wartburg Community Symphony and the Waldemar A. Schmidt Art Gallery have paired up to host an art competition in honor of the symphony’s 70th anniversary. All artists in high school and beyond are encouraged to submit a group of four artworks inspired by the birds in Ottorino Respighi’s orchestral suite “The Birds.” The four featured birds are the dove, the hen, the nightingale, and the cuckoo.
Winners will receive a cash prize and have their artwork projected during the symphony’s “Music Takes Flight” concert in February. Submissions are due to Wartburg’s Music Office on Dec. 12-13. Students needing summer housing will live in Founders Hall. The rates for each 5-week summer session: single housing, $1,200; double, $800; triple, $750; and quad, $700. Double these prices if attending both summer sessions. All rates include a 25 Any Meal Plan.

Gifts needed for Holiday Shoppe
|
The Department of Social Work and the Waverly-Shell Rock United Way have partnered to put on Holiday Shoppe 2022. Holiday Shoppe allows local families who are in need to pick out gifts for children in their household. Holiday Shoppe Christmas trees are set up around campus with tags suggesting gifts for children. Pick one up today and bring back the presents by Monday, Nov. 28. You may also donate cash online. Info session set for Davis Projects for Peace
|
An informational session for the 2023 Davis Projects for Peace applications will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, in the Hub for undergraduate students who want to apply. The Davis Projects for Peace organization will provide support for grassroots projects across the globe in summer 2023 that promote peace and address the root causes of conflict. One project from Wartburg that is creative, engaging, meaningful, measurable, and sustainable is eligible to receive a $10,000 award. At this session, you can learn more about the requirements for applications, which are due Jan. 11.

Engineer to discuss Ubuntu Center at MCSP seminar

The next Department of Math, Computer Science & Physics Seminar will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, in Science Center 134. The featured speaker will be 2015 graduate Alex Jenson, P.E., a mechanical engineer with Modus Engineering. He will discuss the engineering behind the renovation of the Ubuntu Center (formerly the Centennial Complex) in “Breathing New Life Into a Historic Place: The Mechanical Engineering Design Behind the Ubuntu Center Renovation.” All are invited to hear his presentation.

Participants are needed for group activities led by senior social work students. There will be a discussion and stress-relief activity at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, in Old Main 200.

ASA to screen ‘Kiki’s Delivery Service’

The Asian Student Association will present a Japanese movie night at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, in the Clinton Theater. “Kiki's Delivery Service” tells the story of a young witch who moves to a new town and uses her flying ability to earn a living. The movie portrays the gulf between independence and reliance in teenage Japanese girls. Japanese snacks and drinks will be served.

Arts & Crafts Night rescheduled for Dec. 7

The Waldemar A. Schmidt Art Gallery has moved its Arts & Crafts Night to 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7. Everyone is invited to stop by and enjoy a stress-free night of drawing and painting with friends. An optional competition will also be held; a theme will be chosen at the beginning of the night, and participants will create an artwork or craft that fits it. The winner will be selected by the votes of attendees. Supplies will be available, but you are also welcome to bring your own. The entrance to the gallery is in the main lobby of the Bachman Fine Arts Center.

Anxiety screenings scheduled Nov. 15
|
|
On Nov. 15, Counseling Services will offer Walk-In Anxiety Screenings to all students from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This will consist of a brief assessment for anxiety with a brief consultation to follow to discuss the results. Counseling Services is on the third floor of Vogel Library in the ARC. Students do not need to be current clients in the Counseling Center to participate.
