Notify college about alumni updates
|
The Alumni and Parent Relations Office reminds you to encourage alumni to notify the college of life updates (milestones, job changes, etc.) and address changes using the form at www.wartburg.edu/update-our-records or by emailing alumni@wartburg.edu. In addition, you can notify the Alumni Office when Wartburg alumni assist in your department (i.e. camps, conferences, panels, etc.). The Alumni Office is happy to provide Wartburg swag to those alums as a measurement of stewardship and thanks. Just send us a note at alumni@wartburg.edu.

Wartburg Scholarship Club membership & tailgate event
|
Known for many years as the Wartburg Women’s Club, the club now offers membership to ALL faculty, staff, retirees, their spouses, and area alumni who want to support Wartburg students through scholarships! We invite you to join us at our fall event to learn more about the club and become a member. The Fall Tailgate Social will be Saturday, Sept. 25, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (before the Wartburg home football game) at Greenwood, 902 12th St. NW, Waverly, hosted by President Darrel and Christy Colson. Cost is $10 per person, which includes food and beverages. Please register at this link.
What we do in the club:
The club's main effort throughout the year is to raise funds for Wartburg scholarships by providing treats that are ordered for students. You sign up for the treats you want to provide on the dates that work for you. Members are asked to provide five treats during the year. Click here to learn more and to sign up to become a member by Aug. 13. Dues are $15 for a single membership and $25 for a couple.

Everfi training still to be completed
|
As the academic year approaches, the Human Resources Office would like to remind employees to complete their Data Security, FERPA, and annual Title IX training that was assigned in the spring. Thanks to those employees who have completed all of their training; however, we still have quite a few outstanding assignments to get completed. If you have not completed the course, please login to your Everfi portal at this link.

Mail Center update: postage rate increases
|
Postage rates will increase Aug. 29. Departments should contact the Mail Center in person or by email with requests to order stamps in advance of the rate increases. Please keep in mind that the best cost savings continue to be through either metered mail or bulk non-profit as opposed to stamps. Contact Kory Figura for more information about reducing your mailing costs. Relevant rate increases are as follows:

Stamps increase 3 cents to 58 cents for a forever stamp |

Postcards increase 4 cents to 40 cents |

Large envelope base rate increases 16 cents to $1.16; additional ounce rate does not increase |

International letters increase 10 cents to $1.30 |

Most package rates will remain unchanged at this time. |

The Wartburg community extends its condolences to the friends and former colleagues of Henry "Hank" Savage, who passed away Aug. 4 in New Hampton at age 91. Hank was Wartburg's director of building maintenance for Becker Hall of Science and the library before retiring in 1993. He is survived by his wife, Helena, also a former college employee. Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 9, at Community Methodist Church in Clarksville. Please click here to view the obituary.

Students and alumni recently presented at the Midwest Environmental Education Conference (MEEC) at Luther College in Decorah July 26-29 with Dr. Michael Bechtel '94, associate professor of science education. Noah Christians '21 and Ryan Dalton ’21 presented "Biophilic Effects on Long-Term Concept Retention, Academic Achievement, and Intrinsic Motivation in Secondary Science Classrooms." Students Genoa Greg '22 and Hannah Schmitt '22 presented research using dart frogs in the classroom to engage students in cross-curricular disciplines. Students Sidney Baumgartner '22 and Becca Montgomery '22 presented on "Classroom Ioponics: Educational Lessons for Iowa Students." Liz Stange '21 presented undergraduate research ("Sustaining Education: A Book Talk w/ Some Real Talk") through her work with AmeriCorps.
Elementary education students Sidney Baumgartner '22 and Becca Montgomery '22 recently presented classroom ioponics research at the National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference in Des Moines June 28-July 1 with Dr. Michael Bechtel ’94. Educators from across the country attended the presentation to learn new educational strategies and share their own experiences using aquaponics in the classroom. Ioponics has been expanding throughout the state of Iowa and the country with systems recently delivered to Alaska and Colorado.
Dr. Michael Bechtel ’94 was recently awarded a grant from the Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council to build and deliver classroom ioponics systems to educators across the state. Starting Aug. 2, students Sidney Baumgartner '22 and Becca Montgomery '22 will be leading professional development sessions for the next two weeks. The ioponics team will be hosting the largest professional development session on our campus Aug. 10 for 20 educators and the Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council.

Friendship families needed for international students
|
The Wartburg College International Programs office is currently seeking "friendship families" for approximately 20 new international students arriving at Wartburg at the end of August. Friendship families do not house or act as advisers or financial sponsors to the students. They simply meet with their student(s) throughout the year to share meals, holidays, or participate in a variety of cultural activities. Then follow the instructions to create or update an account. Wartburg Alert is the college's emergency notification system.
