Wartburg Chat open forum with Dean Kittle

All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend an open forum with Dean Kittle on Tuesday, March 9, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. via Zoom at this link. This is an opportunity to touch base with you about various topics including the college’s strategic plan, COVID response, diversity equity and inclusion initiatives, and introduce our public health ambassadors. Dean Kittle is looking forward to your thoughts, ideas, or any concerns that you may have.

 

Auditions for 'Brigadoon' musical

Auditions for the the upcoming musical production of “Brigadoon” will be held Monday and Tuesday, March 1 and 2, in the Choral Hall beginning at 7 p.m. To sign up for a time, please contact Sally Malcolm.

 

V-Day Silent Auction opening today

The V-Day Silent Auction is opening this Monday, March 1. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the physical items will be made visible to you through pictures on our Silent Auction tabling, which you can check out in front of the Student Life Office. The Silent Auction is open March 1-17. If you are interested in bidding, please click here.

Student organization funding applications due March 5

It’s that time of the semester! If you serve on the executive team of a student organization, please ensure your group fills out the Allocation Application to receive funding for the upcoming school year. The application is due Friday, March 5, and hearings will be held March 9-21. The application can be accessed at this link. All questions can be directed to Treasurer-Elect Laura Trewin or Treasurer Jordan Flaherty.

 

DJC student media manager positions are open for 2021-22

The Department of Journalism & Communication announces that applications for the following student media managers are now open for all students:

WSMTA autism and neurodiversity fundraiser

WSMTA (Wartburg Student Music Therapy Association) is doing a fundraiser for Enlightenment Week by selling masks for $10. All proceeds will go to the American Autism Society. Click here to see the masks and place an order. Enlightenment Week raises awareness for autism and neurodiversity, and WSMTA puts on events throughout the week to help people get a better understanding of what autism and neurodiversity are. Student Senate Executive Team applications available

Student Senate Executive Team appointed positions applications are available on Monday, March 1. The positions include Academic Ombudsperson, Administrative Ombudsperson, Executive Assistant for Diversity, and Public Relations Director. Applications can be found on the Student Senate webpage. All applications and supporting materials are due by noon on Monday, March 15, with interviews to follow. Submit all items to Olivia Hobson by email at olivia.hobson@wartburg.edu. Art Faculty Exhibition now on display

The 2021 Art Faculty Exhibition features the diverse work and talent of current Wartburg Department of Art faculty and staff:

The exhibition will be on display at the Waldemar A. Schmidt Art Gallery on the first floor of the Bachman Fine Arts Center March 1-28. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-7 p.m. daily and admission is free. ARC game night March 5

The African Representative Council will be hosting a game night on March 5, 7-10 p.m. in the Centennial Lounge. We will be playing Mafia, plus a series of games from the African continent, diaspora, and beyond. Contact A.R.C@wartburg.edu with any questions.

 

VAC volunteer opportunities and exec team applications

The Volunteer Action Center is hiring new members for the 2021-22 Executive Team. Applications will be sent out soon! Below are multiple volunteer opportunities. Follow us on social media and contact us at vac@wartburg.edu if you have any questions.

The Northeast Iowa Foodbank is always looking for volunteers to help package food. If you and your friends would like to sign up individually, follow this link. We are planning to take a group of volunteers on Saturday, March 13, with two available times: 9 a.m.-12 p.m. or 1-4 p.m. We will provide transportation if needed. More information will be sent out, along with a sign-up sheet.
The Peace United Church of Christ in Waverly is looking for volunteers to package meals on Thursdays from 4-7 p.m. weekly. We can provide transportation when groups are going, or you can volunteer on your own or with friends.
VAC is hosting a Watch Party on Friday, March 5, at 7 p.m.! There will be snacks, a movie and some games to follow. Masks and social distancing will be required. This will also be available via Zoom for those who would rather participate that way. Be on the lookout for more information. There will be prizes for those who participate!

 

Social work club to host probation officers Wednesday

Join the Social Work Club on Wednesday, March 3, 7-8:30 p.m. as they welcome two Waterloo area probation officers (both Wartburg alumni who grew up in Waterloo) discussing their jobs in the criminal justice system and ideas for racial justice reforms. The evening’s conversation will also include steps for several policy advocacy projects during March Social Work month. Attendees at this event will receive a certificate for a treat from the Den to celebrate Social Work Month.

2021-22 German Institute funding opportunity

The German Institute announces the call for applications to support activities/endeavors related to German and/or Germany. For 2021-22, a total of $6,000 is available from external sources. An application is required and funds will be awarded on a competitive basis. Applications are due March 15. Awards will be announced no later than April 12. Health Builders virtual event

Health Builders, a Rwandan non-profit, will hold a virtual event at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 4, about how they are helping with the medical crisis in Rwanda. One of the presenters will be Carl Wilkens, who presented the virtual MBK Literary Symposium at Wartburg last October. Any interested Wartburg student or faculty member is invited to join this virtual event. Please click here to register.

 

Guidelines for upcoming online registration & housing lotteries

Student are reminded Winter Term balances were due by 2/10/21 and May Term balances are due by 3/10/21. Student balances must be at $5,000 or below to participate in online registration and the housing lottery for the 2021-22 academic year. Online registration and housing lotteries will begin in March. Monthly payment plan participants, if you are signed up for our online payment plan and your payments are current, you will be cleared to participate in time for your registration week!

 

Apply for The Residence service-learning suites

The Residence is a living and learning environment in which residents come together as a community to grow as servant leaders and gain greater social awareness. Applications for the 2021-22 academic year are now available online at www.wartburg.edu/residence. Applications are due Tuesday, March 2, 2021. Each group must prepare a 10- to 15-minute presentation for the selection committee. Presentations will take place Monday, March 8, through Friday, March 12. Looking for a roommate? Check Facebook group

With the Housing Lottery coming up in the next few weeks, you may be thinking, “How do I find a roommate to add to the group?” The Residential Life team has used a Facebook Group in the past to help people get connected as roommates. If you are looking for a roommate, check out this page. Feel free to post your situation, where you want to live, and how many you want to live with.

Weekday Chapel services

All are welcome at Weekday Chapel services from 10:15 to 10:35 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in the Wartburg Chapel. Chapel time is a brief opportunity to gather with students, staff, and faculty to reflect on God and faith. Interfaith chapels will be held the last Wednesday of each month during the semester. Chapel services are streamed live with Knight Vision, so you can watch from anywhere.

Sanctuary on Wednesday nights

Sanctuary on Wednesday night is a holy space in the midst of your busy life where you can recharge and renew. Expect a relaxed time of Bible study, fellowship, worship band music, prayers, and communion. All are welcome! Worship begins in the Chapel sanctuary at 9 p.m., come early at 8:45 for snacks.

Career mentoring with Orange Connection

Want to learn more about different career opportunities in various majors and minors? If so, consider participating in the Orange Connection, a career mentoring experience. The OC allows you the opportunity to connect virtually with TWO Wartburg alumni for 45 minutes each who have specific knowledge about an occupation, career, or major. This experience allows you to:

Connect with alumni who will share their Wartburg experiences
Gain insight into careers that connect to majors and minors
Learn how others successfully balance their personal and professional lives

Dance Marathon's big event has a new date — March 28! The day will be broken down into three shifts to allow for a more COVID-friendly event.

 

TEDxWartburgCollege looking for MCs

TEDxWartburgCollege is "Questioning the Narrative" on March 20, 9 a.m. to noon. This year's fourth annual event is virtual, open to the public and free! As we're in the process of finalizing our speaker talks, we're looking for passionate individuals who are interested in becoming MCs of the event. Please email us at tedx@wartburg.edu if interested! Painting activity with WCDM

WCDM is hosting a painting class on Thursday, March 4, at 7 p.m. Learn how to paint a rustic wooden sign and have fun with your friends! $15 per person, all supplies included. In quarantine or don’t feel comfortable coming to an in-person event? No worries! The class will also be broadcast over Zoom with supply delivery and/or pickup options available. There are limited spots for in-person, so sign up now. Registration closes Saturday, Feb. 27, at 5 p.m.

 

Vogel Library wants to know what magazines you read!

What to do if you have COVID-19 symptoms

Students who are experiencing symptoms should not engage in any campus activities and should contact Noah Campus Health Clinic immediately at 319-352-8436. Students also should contact Cassie Hales (319-352-8260 or cassie.hales@wartburg.edu) to enact a self-isolation or quarantine protocol (e.g. meal delivery, notification of faculty, and contact tracing). Tests are available at Noah Health Clinic on the first floor of The W.

 

Have you recently tested positive for COVID-19?

If you have tested positive for COVID-19 since returning home for the winter break, please send a copy of your test results to covidresponse@wartburg.edu. By having this information on file with the college’s contact tracing team, you will not be required to quarantine should you be exposed to someone who has tested positive for the virus within 90 days of your test.

 

SCHOLARSHIP & INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Student Senate leadership scholarship application now open

In the spirit of the Wartburg College Mission Statement, Student Senate annually funds two $500 scholarships for Wartburg students. Applications can be found at this link and are due by 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26. Questions can be directed to grace.greving@wartburg.edu.

 

Westmar Endowment scholarship for 2021-22

Following the closing of Westmar University in western Iowa, the Iowa College Foundation (ICF) received funds from the Westmar Endowment to establish an endowment for scholarships. ICF plans to offer three types of scholarships annually from the Westmar Endowment Scholarship Program:

Two Presidential awards - $5,000 each (can only be won once)
15+ $1,000 awards
Up to 20 $500 awards
