'Managing COVID Stress' sessions this week

Counseling Services will be hosting two “Managing COVID Stress” sessions this week. On Tuesday, Sept. 8, there will be an in-person, socially distanced session in the McCoy rooms of the Student Center at 2 p.m. This session will be limited to the first 10 attendees to arrive. On Sept. 10 at 11 a.m., there will be a virtual session held via Zoom, and there is no limit to the number of participants. Additional sessions are being planned and will be announced next week. Questions can be directed to counseling@wartburg.edu.

 

2020 Study Away Photo Contest begins

Were you on a service trip, study abroad, Wartburg West, or Des Moines Urban Studies between September 2019 and March 2020, before the disruption of COVID? Share your study away experience and best photo at www.wartburg.edu/photo-contest by Sept. 21. Voting begins in October — you may be a prize winner! Contact the Study Away office with questions.

 

Dance Marathon face mask fundraiser

Wartburg College Dance Marathon is selling face masks online as a fundraiser. When you purchase one mask for $10, a second mask is donated to one of our Miracle Families. Click here to order a face mask online.

POSTPONED: BackPack Pack event for Bremer County

Due to the spread of COVID-19, the Backpack Pack event scheduled for Sept. 11 has been postponed. We hope to reschedule to a later date this year when it is the safe to do so. Contact Jared Feigenbaum with questions.

 

ETK Large Event date change

In an effort to do our part in reducing the spread of COVID-19, Entertainment ToKnight Large Event has been moved from Fall 2020 to Spring 2021. This date change will allow the ETK team time to prepare a safe event for Knights to enjoy a great concert on campus! Follow ETK on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for date and artists announcements in the near future!

 

Send in your submissions for The Castle literary magazine

The Winter 2020 edition of The Castle, Wartburg’s literary magazine, is available online! Submissions for The Castle’s Fall 2020 edition are now open. Send short stories (creative nonfiction and fiction), poetry, graphic stories and comics! Send any questions to lindsey.jacobs@wartburg.edu.

ATTENTION ARTISTS: There is also a cover art competition. Submit any medium and style of your liking for a chance to be the cover of the book! The Fall deadline for submissions is Oct. 18, including cover art.

 

Wartburg Volunteer Action Center kick-off Thursday

VAC is hosting a kick-off event Thursday, Sept. 10, from 7 to 8 p.m. on the campus mall outside of Old Main. We will have some treats, along with a quick act of kindness activity writing letters of encouragement to those in quarantine. Drop by to introduce yourself, grab a cool cookie and write a letter. Everyone is welcome, so bring your friends! Masks are required and we will social distance as much as possible. We can't wait to get to meet all of you and spread kindness in our community! Applications for Wartburg West and the Des Moines Urban Studies Program are now being accepted for the Summer 2021 term. Hand sanitizer available to all students

As an additional measure to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, all students will receive hand sanitizer in their campus mailbox this week. Instructions to find your mailbox number and combination are posted above the mailboxes.

What to do if you have symptoms of COVID-19

If you have any symptoms or if you know that you have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, do not engage in campus activities and contact Noah Health Center at (319) 352-8436. Click here for options of where to go if you have symptoms or have been exposed to someone who has tested positive. Cassie Hales (319-352-8260 or cassie.hales@wartburg.edu) and Kalyani Kannan (319-352-8681) will help you enact the College’s self-isolation or self-quarantine protocol (e.g. meal delivery, notification of faculty, and contact tracing). Click here for more information about the College’s COVID-19 response.

All students must daily answer a short series of COVID-19 screening questions the first time they log in to the InfoCenter each day. Students who don’t regularly use the InfoCenter should still log in daily to complete the evaluation. This tool is not meant to take the place of consultation with a health care provider or to diagnose or treat conditions if you are feeling ill.

Weekday Chapel services

All are welcome at Weekday Chapel services from 10:15 to 10:35 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in the Wartburg Chapel. Chapel time is a brief opportunity to gather with students, staff, and faculty to reflect on God and faith. Interfaith chapels will be held the last Wednesday of each month during the semester.

Pastoral care for those in quarantine or isolation

If you are a student in quarantine or isolation, Wartburg’s pastoral staff would be more than happy to deliver communion to you. Please email Pastor Brian Beckstrom if you would like us to do so, or for any other spiritual care. We are praying for you all!

 

Sign up for BASIC Life Groups

All young adults are welcome to join a Life Group as part of Brothers and Sisters in Christ (BASIC). Each group meets weekly for an hour to read the Bible, eat together, and talk about life. Leaders will contact you with more information once you register for a group. Wartburg currently hosts four groups on campus, so be sure to select a group in Waverly. Sanctuary on Wednesday nights

Sanctuary is a holy space in the midst of your busy life where you can recharge and renew. Expect a relaxed time of Bible study, fellowship, worship band music, prayers, and communion.ll are welcome!

Reminder: Park only in your assigned lot

Campus Security reminds all students their vehicle must be parked in their assigned lot. If you need to register your vehicle, stop by Campus Security on the first floor of Saemann Student Center. Campus Security will begin ticketing violators immediately. If you have questions, email jay.tommasin@wartburg.edu.

 

Keep singing by being part of a choir

Join a choir at Wartburg! There are five choirs at Wartburg in which you can get involved: Kantorei (non-auditioned mixed choir), Ritterchor (non-auditioned tenor/bass choir), St. Elizabeth Chorale (non-auditioned treble choir), Castle Singers (auditioned mixed chamber choir) and The Wartburg Choir (auditioned mixed concert choir). Students of all ability levels are welcome, even if you have never been in a choir before! To get involved, email Dr. Lee Nelson for assistance getting placed into a choir. Package pickup around Labor Day

Monday, Sept. 7, is Labor Day and there is no mail or courier delivery. The Mail Center will still be open for package pickup, but any packages reaching the Post Office or courier after Friday, Sept. 4, will not be available until Tuesday. The Mail Center thanks everyone for their patience these few weeks. Students, please remember to email mailroom@wartburg.edu if someone other than a staff member will be picking up for you.

Mail pickup for students in quarantine

Quarantining students may have packages picked up by either their symptom checker or a non-quarantining friend. Please email mailroom@wartburg.edu and notify us who will be picking up your packages and for how long. Packages will not be released to students other than the recipient unless email documentation is received.

 

Updated COVID-19 protocol for Business, Financial Aid, Student Employment offices

Beginning Monday, Sept. 7, the Business, Financial Aid, and Student Employment offices will once again be open to walk-in traffic. Customers are welcome to enter; however, during regular business hours (8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.) no more than three people will be allowed in the front lobby at once. Business Office staff are available by phone at 319-352-8411 or email businessoffice@wartburg.edu, Financial Aid Office staff are available at 319-352-8262 or finaid@wartburg.edu, and the Student Employment Office staff are at 319-352-8350 studentemployment@wartburg.edu. We will continue to evaluate our customer service and COVID-19 protocol to ensure the safety of our customers and staff.

Grant nets $170,000 for Health & Human Performance project

A $170,000 grant from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust in support of the Wuertz Health & Human Performance Center and specifically the new exercise science major has moved the fundraising total for the overall project to within $150,000 of its $3.7 million goal. The award is the largest the College has received from the Carver Trust since its $200,000 grant for the Science Center in 2004. The Advancement Office thanks Dr. Ed Westen and Dr. Patricia Dietz for their collaboration in securing the grant.
