VAC May Day of Service moved to Friday

NOTE: The date for the annual May Day of Service has been changed to Friday, May 15, due to weather.
Students, faculty and staff are invited to help with campus spring planting on campus. Meet at the fountain near the Student Center at either of these times: 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
All participants will observe social distancing guidelines, and masks and gloves are required. Please bring your own gardening equipment, masks and gloves if possible. Free shuttle sign up deadline May 15
|
Friday, May 15, is the deadline to sign up for the free student shuttles on May 22 to area airports. Email jennifer.onuigbo@wartburg.edu with questions.
Schedules and online registration are at www.wartburg.edu/shuttle.
If you need transportation on a date other than May 22, please contact jennifer.onuigbo@wartburg.edu. While we can’t provide rides on other dates to all locations, Student Life can assist you in making arrangements.

VAC Knights of Service: Final week!

The Volunteer Action Center is issuing its Knights of Service — Four Weeks of Action event by challenging everyone in our Wartburg family (students, faculty, staff and alumni) to uplift our pillar of service. Check the Juice or VAC social media each week for instructions. VAC will provide action steps and templates to use.
Week 4: Offer a Helping Hand
Knights are challenged to offer a helping hand in their community.

Vogel Library resources during May Term
|
While Vogel Library is closed, physical items cannot be checked out or requested through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Scanned article requests can still be submitted through ILL, though with most other libraries also closed we cannot guarantee these requests will be filled. There are still several ways to ask questions and be in touch with library staff to address your information needs:
Staff will be monitoring these Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and will respond within 1-2 business days. Faculty doing research can reach out to their liaison librarian to discuss options to purchase ebooks.

COVID-19 return-to-campus policy
|
Effective May 1, individuals who return to campus from overnight will not be required to self-isolate for 14 days before returning to work on campus unless they have:

Any of the newly expanded symptoms associated with COVID-19. |
• |
Had contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19. |
• |
Had contact with a person who is being tested for COVID-19. |
• |
Had contact with someone who is ill with respiratory symptoms. |
However, all students who return to campus from overnight travel (including those who are returning to pick up items left in residence halls) MUST contact Cassie Hales, director of residential life, to be screened prior to their return.

UKnight for Students Fund update

Effective May 1, 2020, the UKnight for Students Fund is no longer accepting requests for financial assistance. If students are still experiencing financial need as a result of the Covid-19 Pandemic, please consult with the Financial Aid Office.

Student organization form due May 15
|
Keep your student organization registered! The time has come for Wartburg’s Recognized Student Organization Annual Report. The form collects information about your organization’s membership, leadership and activity during the 2019-20 academic year. This form, available at this link, is due Tuesday, May 15, by 11:59 p.m.

Annika Wall '20 has received a $1,000 scholarship from the Iowa College Media Association. The journalism and communication major from Jesup has worked in the college’s Sports Information Office and as a sports editor for The Trumpet and anchor for Cedar Valley Today. Earlier this year, she was named the ICMA Pat Pisarik Journalist of the Year, which is given to the outstanding journalist serving college media in the past academic year.

Jeana Larson ’01 was elected to be president-elect of the Iowa Bandmasters Association, a 93-year-old organization that promotes “excellence in bands through professional development, mentorship, performance and advocacy,” according to the Northwest Iowa Review. She is the band director at Sheldon Middle School. She named Dr. Craig Hancock, Wartburg’s director of bands, as an influential mentor in her life.

Jared Pirkl ’04 is using a small 3D printer he had in his Hansen Elementary School classroom to produce face shield visors for area medical professionals fighting COVID-19, as reported by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.

Mercy Umba '22 received a $10,000 grant from the Davis Projects for Peace program to help increase mental health access for refugees in northern Uganda received, but the project has been postponed because the of Covid-19 pandemic. Umba was to be mentored by Collins Kalyebi '20, who received a Davis grant in 2018.

Brittany Strause '21 was one of 290 students from across the U.S. selected by Campus Compact to be among its 2020-21 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows. Strause, a social work major from Plano, Ill., has served as the volunteer coordinator for the Department of Social Work’s Holiday Shoppe, a program that provides Christmas gifts for hundreds of Bremer County children, for the last two years.
