Graven Award to honor alumna Feb. 14

Boone serves as a diversity, equity, and inclusion consultant for Hennepin County, Minnesota, is vice president of the Minneapolis Area Synod of the ELCA and is a member of the ELCA Multicultural Leadership Event 2021 core team.

 

The MLK Week event with Jennifer Ulie-Wells, Ph.D. — “Who Do I Want You To Be? Racial/Cultural Trauma in Schools” — has been rescheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, in the ballrooms in Saemann Student Center.

 

Black History Month events

Wartburg’s Black Student Union (BSU) is celebrating Black History Month with the following events, open to all:

•	Tuesday, Feb. 11: Does My Black Life Really Matter? Round Table Discussion (a peace dialogue/discussion about the historic Black Lives Matter movement, WBC 214 (Buckmaster), 11:30 a.m.
•	Thursday, Feb. 20: "13th" documentary viewing, Lyceum, 7 p.m. This documentary, directed by Ava DuVernay, focuses on mass incarceration in the United States.
•	Friday, Feb. 21: Taste of Soul, Cardinal Commons, 4 p.m. Join us for a soul food dinner. Free-will donations are greatly appreciated. Faculty, staff, and kids are welcome!
•	Tuesday, Feb. 25: "13th" documentary Lunch & Learn, Clinton Hall Classrooms, 11:30 a.m.

 

Hate changing your Wartburg password? During the next couple of months, your password expiration will change from 90 to 365 days!

The new password requirements will be:

•	Expire in 365 days
•	Minimum of 15 characters
•	Cannot be reused
•	Passwords are case sensitive
•	A combination of alphabetic, numeric, and special characters is recommended, but not required.

The first group impacted with this change will be senior students on Monday, Feb. 10, followed by juniors, sophomores and freshmen.

Faculty and staff will be changed by the end of March. Each group will receive an email with more information as the time approaches.

 

Sign up for annual drag show

WCDM sip and paint survey

Wartburg College Dance Marathon is considering hosting a sip and paint event for faculty and staff. We would like your input to determine if there would be interest. Please fill out this form and let us know what you think, either way.

 

The Executive Committee of the German Institute is pleased to announce the call for applications to support activities/endeavors related to German and/or Germany. For 2020-21, a total of $6,000 is available from external sources. Because these funds are limited, an application is required and will be awarded on a competitive basis. Applications for the full amount of available funds will at this time most likely not be supported in full. Applications are due Feb. 28. Awards will be announced no later than March 27. In the past, the Institute has funded enrichments to May Term trips to Germany, the German film festival, learning materials for the faculty/staff heritage tour, and subsidized student travel to Germany for study abroad and internships (but not May Terms). Vagina Monologues performances

The Wartburg College V-Day Campaign is sponsoring benefit performances of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14 and 15, at 7:30 p.m., in McCaskey Lyceum. Tickets will be $5 at the door for the general public, $3 for students with IDs, or two for $5 students with IDs. Group rates are also available by emailing vday@wartburg.edu. The Vagina Monologues dives into the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage, and excitement buried within women’s experiences. Proceeds will be donated to Cedar Valley Friends of the Family. V-Day is a globally organized response against violence toward women and girls, and the Wartburg College V-Day Campaign hosts V-Week Feb. 10-14 to raise money and awareness of V-Day’s mission. Other events include a silent auction in the McCaskey Lyceum lobby and an exhibit of the V-Day photo series, on display on the second floor of Luther Hall.

 

Softball team hosts Date Knight

Have Valentine’s Day plans? Want a night without the kids? Pressed to find a babysitter? The Wartburg softball team will host Date Knight as a fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 14, from 4 to 8 p.m at The W. Cost: $20 for the first child and $10 for each additional; minimum age 1 year old. Games, crafts, coloring and more! No food served, but parents are encouraged to send snacks with their kids. Registration at the door.

Philanthropist Davis to receive honorary degree

Philanthropist Shelby Davis will be on campus to receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree Saturday, Feb. 15. The Honorary Degree Ceremony will be at 5 p.m. in McCaskey Lyceum and is open to the public. Since retiring from managing Davis Advisors, Davis has become a major philanthropist, co-founding the Davis United World College Scholars Program in 2000. Davis currently contributes approximately $50 million annually to this cause, which to date has supported more than 10,000 scholars at over 99 U.S. partner colleges and universities. Wartburg matriculated its first Davis UWC Scholar in 2007. Since that time, more than 100 scholars have attended Wartburg; nearly 100 scholars are currently on campus, significantly enhancing the college’s cultural diversity and fostering global understanding.

Update on sustainability position

A note was included in the Jan. 6 issue of The Juice that the college was seeking an adviser for the environmental sustainability program. After receiving feedback from various sources, including the students working in the sustainability program, we are making a slight change in direction that includes the following:

•	Changing the title to “sustainability administrator”
•	Increasing the anticipated annual hours from approximately 250 to approximately 400
•	Posting this part-time position on the college’s Human Resources website
•	Changing the reporting structure for this position from Operations & Maintenance to Student Life
