NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

Exhibit opens — An exhibition featuring the work of artist Angela Waseskuk opens today, Feb. 23, at the Waldemar A. Schmidt Gallery in Bachman Fine Arts Center. All the Good in the End, featuring pieces that transform the ordinary into objects worthy of prolonged contemplation, will be on display through April 1. A reception will be Wednesday, March 25, 7-9 p.m. Currently the foundations coordinator and an adjunct instructor of art at the University of Northern Iowa, she uses common items, including chewed gum, construction paper dots, grocery bags, and yarn to describe and capture the language of life. The gallery is open 9 a.m.-7 p.m. daily. 

Tag Day — Today, Feb. 23, Students UKnight is celebrating Tag Day. Campus is full of tags recognizing the generosity of alumni, parents, friends, faculty, staff, and students for gifts benefitting the Wartburg community. In addition to tags on rooms and equipment, faculty members who hold endowed positions and students with donor-funded scholarships will be wearing tags. Students UKnight members also are wearing tags and are happy to share more information about the contribution of donors. ETK presents singer — South Carolina singer-songwriter Kyshona Armstrong will perform tonight, Feb. 23, 7 p.m., in the Den-Rittersaal. Come hear the voice Flagpole magazine described as "clear and hefty, carrying a weight of fortitude that smacks through the psyche and into the gut, filling the belly with a soul-stirring resonance." The Den will provide free popcorn, and ETK will have a table during lunch hours with a coupon for an appetizer special.

Apply for Senate — Student Senate Executive Team applications for the 2015-2016 academic year are available online. The positions are open to incoming students in any grade. The positions are academic ombudsperson, administrative ombudsperson, executive assistant for diversity, and public relations intern. Applicants need not be otherwise involved with Student Senate. Door closed, office open — To allow for optimum customer service, the doors to the Business Office and Financial Aid Office, Luther Hall 212, will be closed during office hours. The permanent change takes effect this week. The offices remain open for business 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Lenten Chapel Series – Take a break each Wednesday in Lent to consider Jesus’ questions (and your own) about trusting God, faithful living, and telling the good news of God’s love in new ways. The Lenten Chapel Series, The Jewish Jesus: What Does He Mean?, continues this Wednesday, Feb. 25, with the theme Question Tradition? Administrative offices will close from 10:15 to 10:35 a.m. to allow staff and faculty the opportunity to attend the Lenten chapels. The W, Security Office, and Information Desk will remain open.

Service trip blessing – A blessing for outgoing service trip participants will highlight Weekday Chapel Friday, Feb. 27, 10:15 a.m. in Wartburg Chapel. Jamie Harrings ’15 will give the message, and Hope Overflow will perform music.

Motivational speaker — Author Rob Quillen will share his message, Fulfilling Another’s Calling, about the power we hold to change others' lives, Thursday, March 12, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., in McCaskey Lyceum. 

Engineering Activity Night — The engineering science program will host its second annual Engineering Activity Night Tuesday, Feb. 24, 6:30-8:30 p.m., on the second floor of the Science Center. The night, designed for third- through sixth-grade students and their families, will include hands-on activities like the construction of a catapult, a suspension bridge, and boat. Law talk — Representatives from the University of Iowa College of Law will be on campus today, Feb. 23, 6 p.m., in St. Elizabeth Room, Saemann Student Center, to discuss law school, the 3+3 program with Wartburg, and careers in law. Media awards — Wartburg student media organizations won 29 awards at the annual Iowa College Media Association conference, Feb. 5-6, in Des Moines. Wartburg Television won 11 awards, The Circuit took home nine, KWAR earned six, and the Trumpet three. The winners were selected from more than 700 entries submitted by 20 member schools. Click here for more details.

Seminar features Rockwell Collins panel — The next Math, Computer Science & Physics Department seminar will be Tuesday, Feb. 24, 11:30 a.m., in Science Center 134. Seven employees of Rockwell Collins will discuss their educational and professional backgrounds and their current roles. This session is recommended in particular for math, computer science, physics, and engineering students who want to learn more about employment opportunities at Rockwell Collins and generally for students interested in careers in STEM fields. 

RecycleMania event — Dining Services and the Sustainability Office are joining forces for a contest encouraging the use of reusable drink containers. Through Friday, Feb. 27, those purchasing a mug in the Konditorei will receive a coupon for a dollar off a drink. Those who tweet a picture of themselves with the mugto @wartburgsustain and tag it #RecycleMania2015 will be entered to win a prize.

Nominate a teacher — Graduating seniors: Did you have a high school teacher who inspired you and contributed to your upcoming accomplishment of earning a baccalaureate degree from Wartburg? If so, please submit a nomination before March 20 for the Outstanding High School Teacher of the Year Award. Winning teachers will receive $500. In addition, a $500 scholarship will be made available to a rising senior from your high school. Click here for more details and the nomination form. 

Apply to be an Ambassador — Applications for the Wartburg Ambassadors organization are being accepted. Apply here by Friday, March 13. Ambassadors must have a passion for Wartburg, leadership, and service! Members of one of the largest organizations on campus, Ambassadors enjoy giving tours, hosting students overnight, and working with the Admissions and President's offices. 

Fundraiser for orphanage —  Join Students for Peace and Justice for conversation over pizza Wednesday, March 11, 8-10 p.m. in Grossman 132. Pizza will be sold for $1 per slice, and the proceeds will be donated to the Jonathan House, an orphanage in Sierra Leone. Email peace&justice@wartburg.edu for more information.

Class registration tips — Students are encouraged to use schedule grids, available here, to prepare to register for 2015-16 classes. The Course Search feature of My Wartburg can be used to plan a schedule. Each Course Details page provides data on the pre- or co-requisites, credit hours, capacity, instructor, description, seats remaining, Essential Education requirements, etc. Course Finder allows users to search for courses to meet specific Essential Education requirements. Students can reach out to the Registrar's Office and Pathways Center for assistance in preparing a proposed course schedule to discuss with their adviser. Students must have a balance of less than $1,000 on their Winter/May Term bill in order to register. Account balances can be checked by clicking the Finances tab of My Wartburg.

Film festival concludes — The final selection in the Tournées French Film Festival will be shown Wednesday, Feb. 25, 6 p.m., in Whitehouse Business Center 116. The Lovely Month of May is a French classic that reveals Parisians' thoughts on political and social matters at the end of the Algerian War in 1962. Admission to the series is free, popcorn will be served, and discussion will be provided by students in FR 275 Intro to French & Francophone Film. No knowledge of French is required to participate. Löhe and The Residence deadline — The deadline to apply to live in Löhe Hall and The Residence is Wednesday, Feb. 25. Löhe Hall residents develop a learning project with their roommates to educate the Wartburg community. Suites are available for one, three, four, six, or eight occupants. The Residence is a service-learning community with one- or eight-person suites. Residents develop a service project to fulfill a need in the community. Financial aid awareness — February is Financial Aid Awareness Month, and the Financial Aid Office is providing incentive for students to be aware of their financial aid package. Students who visit the Financial Aid Office, Luther Hall 212, to review their financial aid for the 2015-16 academic year will have their name placed in a drawing for one of four $25 gift certificates from the Wartburg Store. Enter by Friday, Feb. 27. Winners will be announced Monday, March 9.

Course deadline — The second seven-week courses began Feb. 18. The last day to add a second seven-week course is today, Feb. 23. To do so, bring a signed drop/add card to the Registrar’s Office, Luther Hall 216. With questions, call the Registrar's Office at 352-8272.

Spiritual climate survey — Students will receive an email invitation March 1 to participate in the Campus Religious and Spiritual Climate Survey. Taking the survey is strongly encouraged as it will help the college learn how you feel about campus and the ways your religious and spiritual growth are supported. The online survey is designed to give students of all religious and cultural backgrounds the opportunity to express their views on how Wartburg is doing in fostering a climate of respect and cooperation, so please also encourage your friends to take the survey.
