To see the Dining Services hours for Christmas Break, please click here. The last meal in Mensa before break will be the evening meal Thursday, Dec. 19. The first meal served in Mensa for Winter Term will be the evening meal on Sunday, Jan. 5.

The final Juice of the Fall Term will be sent out Monday, Dec. 16. The Juice will then take a break until Winter Term and return on Monday, Jan. 6. If you have an item that must run over the break, please contact Steph Boeding.

Art students part of Waterloo exhibition

Five Wartburg art students have had artworks accepted into the Cedar Valley Biennial Juried Art Exhibition set to open Tuesday, Dec. 10, in the Law-Reddington Gallery at the Waterloo Center for the Arts, 225 Commercial St., Waterloo, with a reception and awards ceremony from 6 to 8 p.m. and the awards ceremony at 7. The reception and awards ceremony is free and open to the public. The Cedar Valley Biennial Juried Art Exhibition will be on display through March 8, 2020.

The Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society will meet Friday, Dec. 13, at 4 p.m. in McCoy West of Seamann Student Center. Faculty, staff, students and community members are encouraged to attend and refreshments will be provided. Dr. Tammy Faux, professor of social work, will be presenting with two students.

Storytelling of a medieval holiday tale Saturday
|
All are warmly invited to drop in for the English program's annual reading of “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight." Take a study break and enjoy a spot of festive seasonal storytelling featuring King Arthur and his knights, a monstrous beheading, several sketchy seduction attempts, and delicious refreshments aplenty. The event will be Saturday, Dec. 14, 4-5:30 p.m. in the Hagemann Castle Room.

Business Office closed Friday

The Business Office on the second floor of Luther Hall will be closed Friday, Dec. 13, for a staff retreat. The Financial Aid Office will remain open and their staff will be available for walk-in traffic.

Women’s soccer selling Pura Vida bracelets

Need a great Wartburg Christmas gift idea? The women’s soccer team has it! The team will be selling Pura Vida bracelets for $8. The special bracelets are unisex and a great way to show Wartburg pride! The team will also be selling Wartburg scarves for $20 each, or buy two for $35. Items will be for sale Wednesday, Dec. 11, in the student center from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. during the women’s basketball game in Levick Arena. Contact Coach Tiffany Pins if you would like to purchase either item before Dec. 11.

WCDM Together We Care Tuesday

Wartburg College Dance Marathon is partnering with Applebee’s for Together We Care Tuesday. This event will be Tuesday, Dec. 10, from 4 to 8 p.m. WCDM is selling $10 vouchers that will get you a burger and fries. Five dollars from each voucher goes directly to WCDM! Come and enjoy great food while supporting the kiddos at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Vouchers will be sold at the bottom of the stairs in Saemann Student Center Monday, Dec. 9, during dinner and Tuesday, Dec. 10, during lunch. Vouchers can also be purchased at Applebee’s on Tuesday. You must have a voucher to take advantage of the deal, so stop by to get yours!

The Wartburg Shuttle is urgently looking for drivers for the semester break! This valuable student service transports students to airports in Chicago, Minneapolis, Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Waterloo using Wartburg vehicles at the beginning and end of breaks. Drivers will receive compensation, and all faculty and staff are invited to become drivers pending certification by Campus Security. Please see Jennifer Onuigbo in Student Life for details.

Puppets bring story of ‘Amahl’ to life
|
A troupe of life-sized puppets will join the Wartburg Community Symphony and a host of guest singers for the Dec. 15 performance of “Amahl and the Night Visitors.” The 3 p.m. concert in Neumann Auditorium will be followed by a reception. The symphony, under the direction of Sam Stapleton, will begin the concert with three holiday favorites: “Sleigh Ride,” “Troika” from the “Lieutenant Kije Suite” and “Christmas Festival.” After the intermission, the symphony will take up the Gian Carlo Menotti opera that tells the story of Amahl, a disabled child with a penchant for tall tales, and his encounter with the three kings as they make their way to meet baby Jesus. Tickets are $17 for adults and $7 for K-12 youth. Admission is free for children under 5 and Wartburg College students with a student ID. The Waverly Chamber of Commerce is selling family tickets (2 adults plus children) for $25 at their office downtown.

Fund the Fortress applications
|
Fund the Fortress applications are now being accepted for Winter Term 2020; the deadline is Dec. 31. Fund the Fortress is Wartburg’s crowdfunding platform, available to all organizations and departments on campus. Fund the Fortress projects can vary in size and what they support. If you are unsure if your idea is right for a Fund the Fortress project, contact Rob Ruchotzke at 319-352-8512. Visit www.wartburg.edu/ftf to see all of the projects that have been supported! Applications can be submitted through our About/FAQ section on the Fund the Fortress page or directly at this link. The Advancement Crowdfunding Committee will select three to four Fund the Fortress campaigns for Winter Term 2020. After reviewing applications, the committee will reach out with follow-up questions one to two weeks after the submission deadline.

Holiday Shoppe volunteers needed

The Department of Social Work is pairing up with the Waverly-Shell Rock United Way to put on Holiday Shoppe on Monday, Dec. 9, and Tuesday, Dec. 10. Holiday Shoppe is an opportunity for us to give back to the community by giving families the opportunity to select gifts for their children during the holiday season. We are looking for volunteers to assist us during the days of the Shoppe, with set-up and tear-down. Service Trip applications open

Wartburg has claimed the No. 2 spot in the 2019 Break Away National Alternative Break Survey for the second consecutive year! During the 2018-19 academic year, 147 Wartburg students (nearly 10 percent of the student body) participated in 13 trips organized by the college’s Service Trips program and student leaders. Now is YOUR chance to get involved. Participant applications for Winter Break and Tour Week open on Monday, Dec. 2! Apply right away to get the best chance of being placed on your first choice trip.
Also, consider if you would be interested in applying to be on the Service Trips Executive Team for the 2020-21 academic year. We are hiring!

Advent Candlelight Service
|
All are welcome to an Advent Candlelight Service in the Chapel on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 9 p.m. The evening will be a reflective, candlelit worship with lessons and carols.

All are welcome at Weekday Chapel services from 10:15 to 10:35 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in the Wartburg Chapel. Chapel time is a brief opportunity to gather with students, staff, and faculty to reflect on God and faith. Interfaith chapels will be held the last Wednesday of each month during the semester.
