The Wartburg Democrats are hosting presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren at Wartburg! She will be speaking at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16. Doors open at noon. The event is in the Knights Ballroom in Saemann Student Center. No tickets are necessary; you may RSVP at this link to confirm your attendance. Please remember to use caution when snow and ice are present on sidewalks and steps. Operations & Maintenance will remove snow and add salt or sand to icy spots on sidewalks and steps on campus according to the priority snow removal map. Parking lots will be cleared and salted or sanded as needed by a third party.

Introducting new assistant VP of ITS
|
Wartburg welcomes Loni Abbas, assistant vice president of ITS and chief information officer. She directs the activities of the ITS staff, the production manager and the broadcast engineer. She is a three-time graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, receiving a BA in computer science in 1989, an MS in computer science in 1998, and a Doctor of Technology in 2014. She previously worked at the University of Northern Iowa in a variety of technology capacities.

Knight Vision short film audition

Knight Vision Films is hosting auditions for its first short film of the year. Auditions for the short film “Therapy Date” will be held Monday, Nov. 11, from 7 to 9 p.m. in McElroy Center room 134. We have three main roles and extras.
Synopsis: Matt has his first date with Lisa, but failed to tell her that his therapist was tagging along.

New art exhibition open through Dec. 19

The new exhibit “The View from Here: Reflections of the Iowa Landscape—Paintings by Kirk Hovenga” is now open in Waldemar A. Schmidt Art Gallery. Iowa native Kirk Hovenga returned home to Iowa and began to re-familiarize himself with the natural rural landscape he remembered from his childhood. Hovenga’s recent work explores the indelible mark of memory, light, and the vibrancy of the Iowa terrain. Hours: 9 a.m.-7 p.m. daily; free and open to the public. Wartburg receives 2nd in Rising Star category
|
CampusLabs has named Wartburg College the second place Rising Star award winner “for its work in implementing CoursEval using the option for in-class evaluations, as well as for their campus-wide, phased-in approach to implementing Chalk & Wire.” The Rising Star Award is given to “the campuses that, within one year of implementing their Campus Labs tool(s), have already shown they’re on a unique and promising path to sustainable success.” Thank you to everyone for their hard work and dedication to make this happen.

Kleinfeld Lecture welcomes White House journalist
|
Alexandra von Nahmen, a German political journalist, will be the featured speaker at the annual Kleinfeld Lecture in German History, Culture and Politics at 4:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in McCaskey Lyceum. Von Nahmen’s lecture, “The Battle for the White House: A European View on the U.S. Presidential Election,” will draw from her experiences as the Washington bureau chief for Deutsche Welle, Germany’s international broadcaster. She has covered U.S. national and international politics since 2017 as a member of the White House Correspondents’ Association. She is also president of the White House Foreign Correspondents’ Group.

Diversity & Inclusion Book Club event

All are invited to join the Diversity & Inclusion Book Club, which will study the book “So You Want to Talk About Race.” Pick up your copy of the book in Student Life. Activist, pastor and author Rev. Lenny Duncan on campus Nov. 18
|
The Rev. Lenny Duncan, an activist, Lutheran pastor, and the author of the newly released book Dear Church: A Love Letter from a Black Preacher to the Whitest Denomination in the U.S., will visit Wartburg on Monday, Nov. 18, as part of his nationwide book tour. His public talk will be titled "Dear (College of the) Church." He will speak in weekday chapel at 10:15 a.m. Nov. 18, followed by a book signing in The Wartburg Store from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m., then have lunch with students, visit classes, and have a public book-talk that evening at 7 p.m. in McCaskey Lyceum, with a book-signing and reception to follow in the Castle Room. All are welcome. Lenny is an unlikely pastor, formerly incarcerated and homeless, who now serves the church and world at Jehu's Table in Brooklyn, N.Y., as well as through the Emmaus Collective, a network of mainline churches that have agreed to enter into meaningful anti-racist work. In his book, he argues "it is time for the church to rise up, dust itself off, and take on forces of this world that act against God: whiteness, misogyny, nationalism, homophobia, and economic injustice."

Decorate a tree for Festival of Trees

The annual Wartburg-Waverly Festival of Trees will brighten the halls of Wartburg’s Classroom Technology Center Dec. 4-17. If your office, academic department, or group/organization would like to decorate a Christmas tree to display, please sign up by Friday, Nov. 22. A partnership between the college and Waverly Chamber of Commerce, the festival is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and attracts more than 5,000 guests each year.
