Davis Projects for Peace
The Davis Projects for Peace, in its 12th year, is an invitation to undergraduates at American colleges and universities in the Davis United World College Scholars Program to design grassroots projects that they will implement during the summer of 2019. The projects judged to be the most promising and feasible will be funded at $10,000 each. The objective is to encourage and support today's motivated youth to create and try out their own ideas for building peace. Wartburg students must submit their application using the following link by noon Jan. 14, 2019, at this link.

‘Man of La Mancha’ auditions
Auditions for the musical “Man of La Mancha” will be held Monday, Dec. 3, 7-8 p.m., and Tuesday, Dec. 4, and Wednesday, Dec. 5, 5-6 p.m., in the Choral Hall of the FAC. Students auditioning should bring a prepared piece, preferably from music theatre. Callbacks will be held Thursday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. in the Choral Hall.
Pinnacle concert: 'A Song Without Words'
Pinnacle will present a concert Friday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel. “A Song Without Words” aims to demonstrate music’s potential to transcend human language by showcasing choral music with no text. A freewill donation will be collected for the California Wildfire Relief Fund.
Midnight breakfast
All students are invited to attend the Midnight Breakfast on Sunday, Dec. 9, from 11 p.m. to midnight in Mensa. Hosted by President Darrel and Christy Colson and served by faculty and staff volunteers, the breakfast is a fun Wartburg tradition that kicks off Finals Week.
Order bakery items for break
Dining Services will sell bakery items to take with you over Christmas Break. Items may be ordered through your GET account until noon Thursday, Dec. 13. Gluten-free options are available. If you have questions, contact the Dining Office at 352-8303.
Medieval holiday revelry
All are warmly invited to drop in for the English Department’s annual performance of “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,” a festive seasonal tale featuring mayhem, chivalry, hors d’oeuvres and beverages, on Saturday, Dec. 8, 6-7 p.m. in Hagemann Castle Room.

It’s peanut butter and jelly time!
PB&J Knight Study Break will be Tuesday, Dec. 11, 9-11 p.m. in Knights Ballroom. This is a free event for students, sponsored by Student Center Council (SCC). Take a break from your studies and come have a snack and be sociable at the same time. The menu consists of white and wheat bread, creamy and crunchy peanut butter, strawberry jam, grape jelly, and white or chocolate milk.

The deadline to sign up for the Wartburg Shuttle is fast approaching! Reservations for the Dec. 14 shuttle will be accepted through Dec. 7. Rides are offered to the Waterloo Airport and bus station; the Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, and Minneapolis airports; and Chicago O’Hare Airport and Rosemont CTA station. Dining hours for Christmas Break
Please click here to download a list of the hours for the campus dining areas over Christmas Break. Mensa will be closed Dec. 14-Jan. 5. The Den and Konditorei will be closed Dec. 15-16, Dec. 22-Jan. 1 and Jan. 5. Additionally, the Konditorei will be closed Jan. 6.
Phil & Lit Society
The Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society will hold its last Fall Term meeting at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, in McCoy West of the Saemann Student Center. Dragoslava Barzut, fourth-year psychology major, will present “Cross-Cultural Comparisons of Underlying Factors in Mental Health and Treatment-Seeking Attitudes.” The second presentation will be given by Nickolas Schwake, third-year political science and business administration major. The title of his talk is “The Impact of New Voter ID Laws on Turnout in Bremer County.”
Recipes from Home
Students, faculty and staff are asked to share their favorite recipes from home to be considered for the 2019-20 Mensa menu! Recipes for entrees, salads, ethnic dishes, vegan entrees or sides and desserts can be emailed to Shelly Geweke by Friday, Jan. 31. Don’t forget to include your name and contact information for verification. Recipes chosen will be taste-tested in Mensa and the student body will vote for their favorites. Dishes that receive a “thumbs-up” will be considered for next year’s Mensa menu.

Humanist author to speak
Author Chris Stedman speaks powerfully about how the Lutheran tradition intersected with his story (coming out as a teen and majoring in religion at Augsburg as part of discerning his humanist worldview). He will give a public talk titled “Faitheist: How the Lutheran Church Influenced an Atheist Activist” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, in McCaskey Lyceum. A reception (free food!) and book-signing will follow in the Castle Room. Click here to read more about Stedman’s book in a blog post by Dr. Caryn Riswold. This event is an example of how the Lutheran heritage and mission of Wartburg is expansive and inclusive. Stedman will also speak in weekday chapel on Friday, Dec 7.

Festival of Trees in CTC
The annual Wartburg-Waverly Festival of Trees will brighten the halls of the Classroom Technology Center through Dec. 12. A partnership between the college and the Waverly Chamber of Commerce, the festival is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and attracts more than 5,000 guests each year.

This week's Chapel service schedule

Weekday Chapel services are from 10:15 to 10:35 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in Wartburg Chapel; Sunday services begin at 10:30 a.m. Chapel time is a brief opportunity to gather with students, staff, and faculty to reflect on God and faith. Interfaith chapels will be held the last Wednesday of each month during the semester. Upcoming speakers:

Posekany Literacy Awards
The Education Department and Education Unit faculty and students accepted into the Teacher Education Program, as well as Reading Endorsement students not admitted to the TEP, are eligible for special funding to attend the Iowa Reading Association Conference in Ames, June 25-26, 2019. Wartburg registrants may request reimbursement of expenses for registration, travel, housing, and meals, from the Institutional Advancement Office, Luthe Hall room 123. Contact Scott Leisinger at 352-8495 for information. These literacy awards are available through the generosity of Leonard and Carol Posekany, parents of Education Department emerita faculty Dr. Susan Sherwood and Dr. Peggy Pruisner.
Ph.D. program applications
Graduating seniors applying for Ph.D. programs are encouraged to review https://mcelroytrust.org/fellowship-program/criteria/ and contact Gloria Campbell to get the application form. If nominated by the Wartburg College selection committee, students have a 2/9 chance for more than $10K renewable grad school scholarship. The deadline is Jan. 5, 2019.
