Artist Series show — On the 56th anniversary of their final performance, the music of legends Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and Jiles Richardson (better known as The Big Bopper) will come to life Monday, Feb. 2, 7:30 p.m., on Neumann Auditorium's stage. John Mueller’s Winter Dance Party recreates the trio’s 1959 performance at the iconic Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. The rock ‘n’ roll pioneers died in a plane crash the next morning a few miles outside of Clear Lake. Tickets are $25 to $35 and available online at www.wartburg.edu/artist, by calling 319-352-8691, or at the Saemann Student Center Ticket Office weekdays from noon to 4 p.m. Youth tickets are $10. Tickets for club seating at a table at the front of the house, with easy access to the show’s cash bar, are $45.

Castle Chamber Series — Wartburg’s Castle Chamber Series continues Sunday, Feb. 1, 2 p.m., in Saemann Student Center’s Hagemann Castle Room, with a concert featuring pianist Marian Lee and flutist Nicole Esposito. Lee trained at The Julliard School, Moscow State Conservatory, and Johns Hopkins University and is a piano professor at St. Ambrose University. Esposito, flute professor at the University of Iowa, is an international soloist, teacher, and chamber and orchestral musician. Tickets will be available at the door for $10.
RICE Day notice — Session forms are due to the RICE Day Committee Friday, Jan. 30, for review for Wartburg's fourth-annual Research, Internship, and Creative Endeavor Day celebration Thursday, April 9. RICE Day recognizes student and faculty achievements in and out of the classroom and showcases academic and co-curricular pursuits across disciplines. Last year, 400 students were involved in 550 poster sessions, oral and video presentations, readings, panel discussions, displays, art exhibits, and music performances. Keep on Learning — A compilation of Charlie Chaplin’s career will be featured in the Keep on Learning community education series at Wartburg beginning Thursday, Feb. 5, 9:30-11:30 a.m., in the Heritage Room of Saemann Student Center. Scott Cawelti, University of Northern Iowa professor emeritus, will discuss Chaplin’s comic genius, which entranced three generations of filmgoers and bridged the silent and sound eras of film. Classes continue Feb. 12, 19, and 26. Coffee will be served at 9 a.m. The first class of each session is free; a $30 fee due at the second class covers the rest of the course. Faculty Brass Quintet debuts — A brass quintet of Wartburg music instructors will debut at a recital Tuesday, Feb. 3, 6:30 p.m., in Sandra Rada Orchestra Hall of Bachman Fine Arts Center. The free recital features six selections from the 16th through 20th centuries. The Faculty Brass Quintet includes Dr. Scott Muntefering and Jim Vaux on trumpet, Andy Harris on horn, Bard Mackey on trombone, and Richard Scheffel on tuba.
Enrollment report — The Enrollment Management Office has released the 2014-15 Winter Term Enrollment and Retention Report.
- The Fall-to-Winter Term retention rate is strong at 95.4 percent.
- Including 22 new students, the Winter Term 2014-15 headcount is 1560, compared with 1644 in 2013-2014.
- Seventeen students are participating in Wartburg West and 10 are studying abroad.
Meistersinger choir concert — Internationally acclaimed composer René Clausen will serve as guest clinician at the 2015 Meistersinger Honor Choir Festival at Wartburg Friday and Saturday, Jan. 30-31. More than 400 select high-school singers from throughout the Midwest will attend. A finale concert, Saturday, 7:30 p.m., in Neumann Auditorium, will feature a choir of festival participants and Wartburg Choir members, the Rosemount (Minnesota) High School Concert Choir, and Wartburg choral ensembles. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for K-12 students and can be purchased at wartburg.edu/fest or by calling the Ticket Office at 319-352-8691.

Alumnus to speak in Waterloo — The Waterloo Catholics Winter at the Cellar program will feature Jacob Kohlhaas ’04 presenting on The Church and Gay Catholics tonight, Jan. 29, 7 p.m., at the lounge below CU restaurant, 320 E. Fourth Street, Waterloo. Kohlhaas, instructor of moral theology at Loras College, teaches courses in Christian values, social justice, and sexual ethics. Find information here. Knightline submissions — The February edition of Knightline, the monthly e-newsletter for alumni, parents, and friends of Wartburg, will be sent Thursday, Feb. 5. French film festival — Enjoy Ernest & Celestine, a hand-drawn animated film about interspecies friendship, tonight, Jan. 29, 6 p.m., in Whitehouse Business Center 116, as part of the Tournées Film Festival. GriGris, about a male dancer with a paralyzed leg who overcomes all odds, will be featured Tuesday, Feb. 3. Thanks to a grant from the French American Cultural Exchange, the French Club and the Film Society are hosting the five-film festival. Phil and Lit — The Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society will meet Friday, Jan. 30, 4 p.m., in McCoy West. The Rev. Brian Beckstrom, college pastor, will present A College of the Church for the 21st Century.
Study abroad deadline — Advisers with advisees considering spending a term studying abroad either Fall Term 2015 or Winter Term 2016 should remind students that the application deadline is Monday, Feb. 2. TriByKnight Triathlon — Register for the TriByKnight Triathlon at the main desk of The W by Saturday, Jan. 31, to participate in the Saturday, May 2 event, which includes an indoor 300-yard swim, 15-mile bike ride, and 5K run. Registration is $45, increasing to $55 after Saturday, and includes a swim cap, moisture-wicking T-shirt, race goodie bag, and post-race meal and drink at The Fainting Goat. Wartburg Open renamed — The Wartburg Open has been renamed in honor of Chelsey Henkenius '14, a track and field team member who died Dec. 27 in a car accident in Lake City. Additional information is available here.
Literary symposium planned — A series of events focused on Striking Languages: Language in Research, Expression, and the Professional World is planned for next week. Events include:

Postage changes — The United States Postal Service now requires a tracking number to ship all Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, First Class, Standard Post, Media Mail, and Library Mail. Regular rates still will apply for all Priority Mail packages. Other pieces (non-Priority Mail under 13 ounces) will be charged an additional rate of $1.05. Additional changes are expected. Please call Darla Hamann, mail center coordinator, at 352-8263 for additional information. The procedures are very complicated and more will be learned as implementation begins.
Segregation Simulation Week — Understand the struggle of segregation with activities Feb. 1-7 as part of Black History Month. During the week, students will be separated by their eye color. Signs will direct them to bathrooms, water fountains, and more that can or can not be used based on one’s eye color.
