Thank your mentor — January is National Mentoring Month. In celebration, recognize Wartburg mentors by signing them up to receive electronic recognition Monday, Jan. 26. MLK Day volunteering— Openings remain for service projects Monday, Jan. 18, throughout the Cedar Valley. The MLK Day activities will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Classes will be shortened with students, faculty, and staff encouraged to participate. KWAR seeks deejays
 — Wartburg's student-run radio station, KWAR-FM 89.9, will hold a meeting for prospective deejays today, Jan. 15, 5:30 p.m., in McElroy Communication Arts Center 134. The station is seeking passionate, energetic students and faculty from any academic discipline interested in hosting a show through Winter Term. KWAR deejays control the sound and content for one of the most unique college radio stations in the Midwest. Phil and Lit
 — The first Winter Term meeting of the Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society will be Friday, Jan. 16, 4 p.m., in McCoy West, Saemann Student Center. Dr. Brian Ernsting, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty, will present DNA Sequence and Gnome-structure Characters: A Total-evidence to Reconstructing Phylogeny.


Writers wanted 
— The Wartburg Trumpet is looking for potential journalists and writers who are interested in current events on and off campus. Journalism experience is not necessary for this paid position. Spiritual retreat — Register by Friday, Jan. 16, to participate in a spiritual retreat at Camp EWALU in Strawberry Point from 6:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, through noon Saturday, Jan. 24. Hosted by SALT, Campus Ministry’s service and leadership team, the retreat will include activities, spiritual reflection, and information about faith resources on campus. There is no cost to attend. Recipes From Home due 
— The deadline for students to share their favorite recipes from home to be considered for the 2015-16 Mensa menus is Friday, Jan. 16. Recipes for entrees, salads, ethnic dishes, vegan entrees or sides, and desserts can be emailed to jill.everding@wartburg.edu or dropped in the Mensa suggestion box. Include your name and contact information for verification. Recipes chosen will be taste-tested in Mensa, and the student body will vote for their favorites to be considered for next year’s menu.


Candlelight dinner
 —  Signup will take place for the Phi Eta Sigma honor society sponsored candlelight dinner tonight, Jan. 15, 5:15-7 p.m., in the Mensa. Honor society leaders will discuss their organization while while students, faculty, and staff mingle over dinner Wednesday, Jan. 21, 6:30 p.m., in the Saemann Student Center ballrooms. The cost for students with a board plan is $2. This may be paid with points, declining balance, or cash. Special dietary considerations will be taken into account.


Marriage preparation
 — Spiritual Life & Campus Ministry will offer Preparing for Marriage workshops on four Sundays during Winter Term: Jan. 18, Jan. 25, Feb. 8, and Feb. 15. The free workshops, held 6-7 p.m. in Chapel Commons, will focus on foundations for a healthy marriage. All are welcome. WartburgAlert test
 — The college's emergency notification system, WartburgAlert, will be tested today, Jan. 15, around noon. WartburgAlert is tested at least once per term. If you haven’t registered, please do so online. Uncertain if you are registered? Email campus.security@wartburg.edu for confirmation. Questions can be directed to the Security Office in Saemann Student Center Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. 


Speech and debate
 — Interested in joining the forensics team? Swing by the annual Bob Smith Invitational Sunday, Jan. 18, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., in Bachman Fine Arts Center and McElroy Communication Arts Center to learn about speech and debate on the collegiate level. Sustainability survey
 — Students are encouraged to take a short, confidential survey that will measure sustainability awareness and knowledge on campus. Participants can enter a drawing for one of three solar phone chargers or a $50 gift card to The Wartburg Store. Complete the survey by Monday, Jan. 19. Questions can be directed to Anne Duncan, sustainability coordinator, at anne.duncan@wartburg.edu.


Need school supplies?
 — Reuse(d), located in Old Main 15, keeps gently used office supplies in the Wartburg community (and out of landfills) at no cost to students, faculty, and staff. Questions can be directed to Anne Duncan, sustainability coordinator, at anne.duncan@wartburg.edu.


Student account refunds 
— Students who have credit on their accounts and would like a refund must request it by noon on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Checks will be available Thursday, Jan. 22, in the Business Office, Luther Hall 212.


Off-campus housing
 — Students desiring to live off campus for the 2015-16 academic year must apply for approval from the Residential Life Office. Application forms, available only to those meeting the qualifications to apply, are available in the Student Life Office in Saemann Student Center. They must be submitted by 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13. Because Wartburg values the role of residence hall life in creating a vibrant living/learning community, all full-time students are required to live on campus all four years and for the duration of each academic year. Many factors affect the amount of off-campus housing allowed, including enrollment projections and on-campus housing capacity.
