Sustainability survey — Faculty and staff are encouraged to take a short, confidential survey that will measure the participant's sustainability awareness and knowledge on the campus. Take the 10-minute survey by Monday, Jan. 19, at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/1415sustainability. It will help complete the Sustainability Tracking and Rating System through the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. Questions can be referred to Anne Duncan, sustainability coordinator, at anne.duncan@wartburg.edu.

MLK Day volunteering — Openings remain for service projects Monday, Jan. 18, throughout the Cedar Valley. The MLK Day activities will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Classes will be shortened with students, faculty, and staff encouraged to participate. Thank your mentor — January is National Mentoring Month. In celebration, recognize Wartburg mentors by signing them up to receive electronic recognition Monday, Jan. 26. WartburgAlert test — The college's emergency notification system, WartburgAlert, will be tested today, Jan. 15, around noon. WartburgAlert is tested at least once per term. If you haven’t registered, please do so online. Uncertain if you are registered? Email campus.security@wartburg.edu for confirmation. Questions can be directed to the Security Office in Saemann Student Center Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
Upcoming events notice — The search is underway to fill the production manager position previously held by Hans Pregler. In the meantime please provide information on event set-up and technical needs to Jean Buckingham, camps, conferences, and event scheduling manager, by email at jean.buckingham@wartburg.edu at least three weeks before the event. Requests will be accommodated as possible, but it may be necessary to make modifications during this transition.
Paycheck process change — Starting this month, paycheck stubs will be available online rather than sent through the mail. (This change affects those utilizing direct deposit, not those receiving paper paychecks.) Please use the Online Paystub Instructions form on this webpage to familiarize yourself with the process for accessing your paystub. Also, look for an email from Human Resources & Payroll with more information about this important procedural change.
KWAR seeks deejays — Wartburg's student-run radio station, KWAR-FM 89.9, will hold a meeting for prospective deejays tonight, Jan. 15, 5:30 p.m., in McElroy Communication Arts Center 134. The station is seeking passionate, energetic students and faculty from any academic discipline interested in hosting a show through Winter Term. KWAR deejays control the sound and content for one of the most unique college radio stations in the Midwest. Recipes From Home due — The deadline for faculty and staff to share their favorite recipes from home to be considered for the 2015-16 Mensa menus is Friday, Jan. 16. Recipes for entrees, salads, ethnic dishes, vegan entrees or sides, and desserts can be emailed to jill.everding@wartburg.edu or dropped in the Mensa suggestion box. Include your name and contact information for verification. Recipes chosen will be taste-tested in Mensa, and the student body will vote for their favorites to be considered for next year’s menu.
Phil and Lit — The first Winter Term meeting of the Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society will be Friday, Jan. 16, 4 p.m., in McCoy West, Saemann Student Center. Dr. Brian Ernsting, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty, will present DNA Sequence and Gnome-structure Characters: A Total-evidence to Reconstructing Phylogeny.
Candlelight dinner — Signup will take place for the Phi Eta Sigma honor society sponsored candlelight dinner tonight, Jan. 15, 5:15-7 p.m., in Mensa. Honor society leaders will discuss their organization while while students, faculty, and staff mingle over dinner Wednesday, Jan. 21, 6:30 p.m., in the Saemann Student Center ballrooms. Special dietary considerations will be taken into account.
Keep on Learning — Dr. Michael Bechtel will talk one-room schoolhouses, online education and scaly creatures during the Keep on Learning community education series this month. Bechtel, assistant professor of biology education, will explore the evolution of the public education system today, Jan. 15, in a discussion-type format. Then, Jan. 22 and 29, participants will learn about reptiles and amphibians. All classes are in the Heritage Room of Saemann Student Center from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. A $30 fee covers all remaining sessions.
