Paycheck process change — Starting this month, paycheck stubs will be available online rather than sent through the mail. (This change affects those utilizing direct deposit, not those receiving paper paychecks.) Please use the Online Paystub Instructions form on this webpage to familiarize yourself with the process for accessing your paystub. Also, look for an email from Human Resources & Payroll with more information about this important procedural change.
Carnegie Foundation honor — Wartburg is one of 240 colleges and universities honored by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching for its commitment to community outreach and service-learning. The Community Engagement Classification recognizes schools with quality institutional outreach and community engagement that aligns among mission, culture, leadership, resources, and practices. Wartburg was a member of the inaugural class of 62 institutions receiving the Community Engagement Classification in 2006. The college earned the reclassification, valid through 2025, following a rigorous application process. Click here for a full release.

GPA report — The Fall 2014 Grade Point Average Report is available online. Both the overall GPA average (3.161) and median (3.285) are the highest since at least 2002-03. First-time, first-year students posted an average GPA of 2.887 and a median GPA of 3.163. Former campus pastor dies — John Beem ’57, a former interim campus pastor at Wartburg, died Dec. 26 at the age of 79. After graduating from Wartburg College and Wartburg Seminary, Beem served parishes in Humboldt and Dubuque and in Michigan and Wisconsin. The Waterloo native was bishop of the East Central Wisconsin Synod from 1988 to 2000. He filled in at Wartburg in 2002. A memorial service was Dec. 31 at Living Word Lutheran Church in Alexandria, Minnesota.
Castle Chamber Series — The Castle Chamber Series continues Sunday, Jan. 11 with a concert featuring soprano Dr. Jennifer Larson and pianist Dr. Jeffrey Price. The program, Schubertiade on the Rocks, with a Twist, will be at 2 p.m. in Saemann Student Center’s Hagemann Castle Room. Tickets will be available at the door for $10. The program features well-loved and lesser-known works of Franz Schubert as well as the premiere of works by Price, an accomplished composer. Wartburg professor of music Dr. Eric Wachmann will perform on clarinet.
Winter woes — The south entrance to Old Main will be closed until Monday, Jan. 12, in an effort to conserve heat. Please access the building using the north doors.
Recipes From Home — The deadline is Friday, Jan. 16 for students, faculty, and staff to share their favorite recipes from home to be considered for the 2015-16 Mensa menu! Recipes for entrees, salads, ethnic dishes, vegan entrees or sides, and desserts can be emailed to jill.everding@wartburg.edu or dropped in the Mensa suggestion box. Include your name and contact information for verification. Recipes chosen will be taste-tested in Mensa, and the student body will vote for their favorites to be considered for next year’s menu.
Catholic Mass — Catholic Mass will be held tonight, Jan. 8, 9 p.m., in Wartburg Chapel.
FCA group forms — Strengthen your faith through the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a new organization on campus. Students, staff, and faculty are invited to a meeting featuring guest speaker Aaron Thomas tonight, Jan. 8, 9 p.m., in Levick Arena. Thomas is the son of the late Aplington-Parkersburg football coach Ed Thomas. Led by student-athletes, FCA encourages coaches, student-athletes, and all students to serve through fellowship in the church. Club activities will include Bible studies, community service events, and discussions based on speakers.
Bible study begins — Explore The Story of Jesus According to Matthew in a six-week Bible study sponsored by Spiritual Life & Campus Ministry that begins today, Jan. 8, 11:30 a.m., in Whitehouse Business Center 215. The Bible study will help answer questions about what Jesus was like, what he taught, who he claimed to be, and what it means for us. The group will meet Wednesdays, 8-9 p.m., and Thursdays, 11:30 a.m. No background knowledge is necessary to join the discussion. Keep on Learning — Dr. Michael Bechtel will talk one-room schoolhouses, online education, and scaly creatures during the Keep on Learning community education series this month. Bechtel, assistant professor of biology education, will explore the evolution of the public education system at sessions today, Jan. 8, and Thursday, Jan. 15. Then, on Jan. 22 and 29, participants will learn about reptiles and amphibians. All classes are in the Heritage Room of Saemann Student Center from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The first class is free; a $30 fee due at the second class covers the rest of the sessions. Variety act tonight — ETK will host John Cassidy, who will perform a variety act with comedy and magic, tonight, Jan. 8, 8 p.m., in Neumann Auditorium.

Budget slideshow — The budget presentation that was shared at open meetings with faculty and staff in November is available on the Business Office forms page of the InfoCenter. The file is titled Budget and Expense Review Process (Nov. 2014).
Keep on Learning course proposals — The Keep on Learning Steering Committee is accepting course proposals for the 2015-16 academic year from faculty, staff, and retirees. The four-week courses are open to the public and held 9:30-11:30 a.m. Thursdays at Wartburg. Subject matter should have broad appeal but does not have to be within your academic discipline. Leaders of the selected courses receive a stipend of $600 (less appropriate withholding taxes for current faculty and staff). Proposals are due to the Academic Affairs Office, Luther Hall 202, by Friday, Feb. 27. Proposals should be brief and include information on the subject matter, a summary of the course, and an outline of content for each session. 2014 alumna passes away — Chelsey Henkenius, a 2014 graduate and Lake City native, died Saturday, Dec. 27, in a car accident in Lake City. She earned her biology degree in three years and was a member of the track and field team.
Exhibit opens — Creations formed from found and appropriated objects and clay-covered debris will be featured at an exhibition opening Friday, Jan. 9, at Waldemar A. Schmidt Gallery in Bachmann Fine Arts Center. Ballast, showcasing creations by Gratia Brown, will run through Feb. 13. A reception will be Thursday, Feb. 12, 7-9 p.m. Brown is a resident artist and lecturer in ceramics at the University of North Dakota. The exhibit is free and open to the public. The gallery is open 9 a.m.-7 p.m. daily.
Marriage preparation — Spiritual Life & Campus Ministry will offer Preparing for Marriage workshops on four Sundays during Winter Term: Jan. 18, Jan. 25, Feb. 8, and Feb. 15. The workshops, held 6-7 p.m. in Chapel Commons, will focus on foundations for a healthy marriage. All are welcome to the free sessions.
