St. Elizabeth Week service award nominations 

Nominate a student for the St. Elizabeth Award for Service by noon Monday, Nov. 6, by clicking on this link. Nominee qualifications:

  • Must be a current student at Wartburg College.
  • Must demonstrate a strong commitment to service by working for the welfare of communities and individuals.

Nominate a faculty or staff member for the Pastor Larry Trachte Award for Service by noon Monday, Nov. 6, by clicking on this link. Nominee qualifications:

  • Must be a current faculty or staff member at Wartburg College.
  • Must demonstrate Pastor Trachte’s Wartburg enthusiasm, support, involvement, dedication, and commitment to service.

Award recipients for each award will be recognized during Chapel on Wednesday, Nov. 15.

 
NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS
 
Kleinfeld Lecture in German History, Culture, and Politics
The public is invited to the annual Kleinfeld Lecture at 4:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, in McCaskey Lyceum. The Rev. Miriam Gross, pastor of the German Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Paul’s in New York City, will speak on A Means of Hope and Grace: Living Lutheran Identity in the Public Square
S.A.F.E. candlelight dinner
The sign-up for the candlelight dinner hosted by S.A.F.E. (Suicide Awareness For Everyone) will take place Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 8-9, 5:15-7 p.m., in Mensa. S.A.F.E. members will discuss their organization while students, faculty, and staff mingle over dinner Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 6:30 p.m., in the Heritage Ballroom in Saemann Student Center. The cost for students with a board plan is $2. This may be paid with points or cash at sign-up. Off-board students may also attend, and their cost will be $10 at sign-up. Special dietary considerations will be taken into account.
Math CaSin(θ) night
Members of the Perspectives in Mathematics class will sponsor a Math CaSin(θ) on Friday, Nov. 10, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., on the second floor of the Science Center. Come play a variety of math-related casino games and enjoy refreshments. The event also counts for a math culture point if you need one. 
Kickoff to St. Elizabeth Week
St. Elizabeth Week begins with these events on Sunday, Nov. 12:
  • 10:30-11:30 a.m.: St. Elizabeth’s Worship, Wartburg Chapel
  • 3-5 p.m.: Cardboard Box City Building, Campus Lawn (in front of Old Main)
Student teacher meeting 
The Education Department will hold a meeting Tuesday, Nov. 7, at 11:30 a.m., in WBC 214 for students scheduled to student-teach during the 2018-19 academic year. Application and resume instructions will be explained during the meeting; applications are due Dec. 8.
The Vagina Monologues auditions 
The Wartburg V-day Campaign invites all women to audition for The Vagina Monologues. Auditions will be Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 13-14, beginning at 7 p.m., in the McCoy rooms. Click here to sign up. The Vagina Monologues seeks to get women’s stories heard and to help stop violence against women right here in our Wartburg community, in Waverly, and beyond. Table Talks thank you
Thank you to everyone who volunteered and participated in the Reformation Day activities on campus. Spirited Expression was a beautiful chapel service, and the Table Talks generated valuable conversations, provided awareness, and brought individuals together who may be able to develop new relationships. We are very blessed at Spiritual Life and Campus Ministry to have this type of commitment throughout our campus!
Phil & Lit Society
The next meeting of the Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society will be Friday, Nov. 10, at 4 p.m., in McCoy West. The speaker will be Dr. Jose Reyes-Tomasini, visiting assistant professor of biology. The title of his talk is Fish Behavioral Responses to Odorants and Aversive Substances..
Math, Computer Science & Physics Department Seminar
The next Math, Computer Science & Physics Department Seminar will be Tuesday, Nov. 7, at 11:30 a.m., in SC134. Two Wartburg students will present on their summer experiences at John Deere and NASA. Madalyn McKelvey ’18, an engineering science and mathematics double major, will present My Experience as an Intern at John Deere, and Amy Isvik ’18, a mathematics and computer science double major, will present Expanding the NASA PVS Library. All are welcome. Refreshments will be provided.

Open mic poetry reading 
Wartburg’s V-Day Campaign and SMART are sponsoring an open mic poetry reading event Thursday, Nov. 9, 6:30-8 p.m., in the Chapel Commons. Signup will be at the event. Bring a piece to read, or come and snap for your friends. Snacks and light refreshments will be provided. If you have any questions, email Emma Evans-Peck or Maddie Simmons.
Habitat for Humanity Service Saturdays 
Ready to learn some tricks of the trade of home building? Wartburg Habitat for Humanity is sponsoring three additional builds this semester in Waverly. All are welcome to learn new skills while helping build affordable housing. Upcoming builds will be on Saturdays, Nov. 11 and Dec. 2. Board of Regents commendation motion
The Board of Regents at its recent meeting approved a motion recognizing the campus community for its efforts in reaccreditation:
COMMENDATION MOTION: That the Board of Regents hereby commends and celebrates the splendid work of faculty, staff, students, alumni, the President’s Cabinet, and President Colson in presenting the College’s mission and achievement to the Higher Learning Commission, thereby earning the Commission’s reaffirmation of accreditation. The Board of Regents is proud of this important accomplishment and stands with all of you in the ongoing work of assuring excellence in the delivery of Wartburg’s distinctive plan of education.
Decorate a tree for Festival of Trees
The annual Wartburg-Waverly Festival of Trees will brighten the halls of Wartburg’s Classroom Technology Center Nov. 29-Dec. 14. If your office, academic department, or group/organization would like to decorate a Christmas tree to display, please sign up by Monday, Nov. 20. For more information and/or to sign up, go to www.wartburg.edu/trees. Contact Joni McDonough with questions. A partnership between the college and Waverly Chamber of Commerce, the festival is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and attracts more than 5,000 guests each year. New this year will be a People’s Choice Award. Visitors will have the chance to vote for their favorite tree, and the winner will receive a prize.

SPIRITUAL LIFE & CAMPUS MINISTRY
 
Weekday Chapel services
Weekday services are from 10:15 to 10:35 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in Wartburg Chapel. They are a brief opportunity to gather with students, staff, and faculty to reflect on God and faith. Interfaith chapels will be held the last Wednesday of each month during the semester. It’s a great time to put regular worship on your schedule. This week’s Weekday Chapel looks like this:

Dokimazo at Luther Seminary 
Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., will host a fall discernment retreat called Dokimazo on Nov. 11-13. If you are interested in attending, please fill out this form so we can arrange transportation and get everyone registered. You must also fill out the Luther Seminary registration form here, where you can also find more information, or contact Dr. Chip Bouzard for details.
Nov. 28 Table Talk: Reforming Education
Join us for a Table Talk about “Reforming Education: How Might Reformation Thinking Inform K-12 Educational Change Today?” The event will be Nov. 28, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Chapel Commons (lower level of the Chapel) and is sponsored by Spiritual Life and Campus Ministry. Education professor Rick Snyder will present principles and criteria driving educational reform from the Reformation era. Then we will consider principles and criteria motivating change in public education today. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss comparative educational reform efforts in 1517 and 2017. Join the ongoing work of reformation by reserving a spot for lunch, conversation and learning prior to Nov. 22. Send an email to SLCM with “Nov. 28 Table Talk” in the subject line. Include in the body of your email your name, email address, and phone number.

Pastor Ramona Bouzard will give the message Sunday, Nov. 12, at 10:30 a.m., in Wartburg Chapel.
SALT meeting changed
The SALT (SLCM Service and Leadership Team) meeting has been changed and will meet Nov. 19, 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Chapel Commons (following Sunday morning worship). Lunch will be provided. Contact Paster Brian Beckstrom to reserve your lunch.
 
WARTBURG IN THE NEWS
 
The college's partnership with Retrieving Freedom Inc., as well as Keegan Birkicht ’15, RFI program director, were featured in a Living Lutheran magazine article written by Karris Golden ’98.

The football team clinched the Iowa Conference title with a 23-0 shutout over Dubuque, as reported by the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier.
