Learn about Eisenach Immersion program 

Interested in studying, living, and job shadowing at the foot of the Wartburg Castle as part of the Eisenach Immersion program? Come meet Lord Mayor of Eisenach Katja Wolf and members of her staff Tuesday, Oct. 10, 3:30-4:15 p.m., in LH 201, and discuss opportunities available to you. Internship sites are diverse based on major but have included the city archive, the Gallery for Contemporary Art, Wartburg Radio, and EDAG Automotive Engineering, among others.

 
HOMECOMING HAPPENINGS
Renaissance Faire 
Make sure you grab something to eat at the Renaissance Faire, 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, on the Campus Mall. Check out some of our new food options, crafts, and entertainment sponsored by Wartburg student organizations, local nonprofits, and vendors.
 
Oktoberfest
Students are welcome to use their meal plan to get into Oktoberfest, no registration need. NOTE: “Buddy meals” may NOT be used for this event. Students without a meal plan can register early to take advantage of the discounted price ($15). After online registrations closes on Wednesday, tickets will be $20 each. Preregistered tickets will be admitted first into the event on Saturday, Oct. 14, 4-6:30 p.m., on the Campus Mall. Don't forget your lederhosen!
NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS
 
Leadership & Service Summit mentors wanted 
The Leadership & Service Summit (formerly HSLI) engages high school students in service and teaches them leadership skills in a weeklong residential program. Mentors would assist in facilitation of presentations and activities during the designated week and have training at a scheduled time (as a class) during Winter Term. Mentors would then be assigned students to keep in contact with, assist with their projects and papers, and answer any questions. There are two opportunities to be a mentor:
  • Wartburg College, June 24-30, 2018 
  • Wartburg West (Mt. Evans and Denver, Colo.), July 8-14, 2018

Soak Your Professors event returns 
The Soak Your Professors event will return to the Renaissance Faire during Homecoming & Family Weekend. The fundraiser for the Society of Physics Students offers three water balloons for $2 and the opportunity to launch them at several noteworthy faculty and staff targets Saturday, Oct. 14, between 10:45 a.m. and 1 p.m., on the campus mall. “Targets” include Mike Bechtel, Ben Bousquet, Justin Crouse, LeAnn Faidley, Charles Figura, Michaeleen Golay, Zak Montgomery, Leilani Zart, and John Zelle. The specific schedule will be publicized via fliers this week and at the Society of Physics Students booth at Homecoming.
Join the Dining Services team 
Are you awesome? Do you like to make money? Wartburg Dining Services wants you! We are one of the highest-paid departments on campus for student workers, paying $8.25 per hour. We are looking for people for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. You can work any of those hours plus others. Apply on KnightLink or contact Bethany Myers.
Swing away during Homecoming 
Wartburg's softball team will host a home run derby fundraiser during Homecoming & Family Weekend on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Lynes Field. Cost is $10 for 10 swings. The winner will receive a collection of gift certificates from Waverly’s favorite establishments. Participants can also hit off of Wartburg softball pitchers for $1 per swing. All are welcome!
Help us celebrate the Reformation
On Oct. 31 the Wartburg campus will celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. Don’t miss two opportunities to be part of the day’s activities:
  • Spirited Expression: A Reformation Celebration will be held in the chapel from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., featuring Dr. Karen Black, college organist; the Wartburg Choir with Dr. Lee Nelson conducting; and the Rev. Dr. Kathryn Kleinhans, speaker.
  • From 12:45 to 3:15 p.m., students, faculty, and staff in groups of 12-15 will gather for Reformation Table Talks, guided discussion, and honest conversation about the college’s mission of faith and learning and the future of Spiritual Life and Campus Ministry. To reserve a spot (and a lunch) at the Table Talks, click here by Friday, Oct. 20. No classes, lessons, or meetings will be held during this time and most offices will be closed so all can participate.

Wartburg Track and Field rummage sale 
The track and field team will host a rummage sale Friday, Oct. 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the Canfield Strength and Conditioning Room in The W. All past or used items must go. CASH or CHECK ONLY. There will be miscellaneous T-shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants, and hats. First come, first served. Items will also be sold at the Renaissance Faire on Saturday, Oct. 14, 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m., on the campus mall.
See comedian after Kapers on Friday
ETK will be presenting comedian Pete Lee on Friday, Oct. 13, in McCaskey Lyceum right after Kastle Kapers! The show is family friendly and is free.
Gallery talk Thursday 
A gallery talk in conjunction with the exhibition of works by Argentine artist Mauricio Lasansky will be Thursday, Oct. 12, at 11:30 a.m., in the Waldemar A. Schmidt Art Gallery. Guest speakers will include Phillip and Diego Lasansky. Immediately following the lecture, a public dedication of Diego’s 2015 intaglio print, Junker Jörg 1521, will be held. President Darrel Colson will share some words of thanks before formally dedicating the work and accepting it into the college’s permanent art collection. Both events are free and open the public. Sociology Club speaker 
Hosted by the Sociology Club, John Jackson, Wartburg alumnus and police chief of Greenwood Village, Colo., will speak on his involvement with Colorado's marijuana legalization and community policing Thursday, Oct. 19, 7-8:30 p.m., in Buckmaster (WBC 214). Calling all artists 
The Castle, Wartburg’s literary magazine, is looking for all artists — writers, designers, photographers — to submit their work for the opportunity to be published. Email your work to castle@wartburg.edu or kathryn.lee@wartburg.edu by Thursday, Nov. 2.
German Institute funds available 
The German Institute announces the annual call for applications to support activities/endeavors related to German and/or Germany. For 2017-18, a total of $1,500 is available from external sources. Because these funds are limited, an application is required, and they will be awarded on a competitive basis. Applications for the full amount of available funds will, at this time, most likely not be supported in full. Applications are due Nov. 3. Awards will be announced by Dec. 1. In the past, the Institute has funded enrichments to May Term trips to Germany, the German film festival, learning materials for the faculty/staff heritage tour, and subsidized student travel to Germany for study abroad. Sociology Club Candlelight Dinner 
Sign-up for the Candlelight Dinner hosted by the Sociology Club will be Wednesday, Oct. 18, and Thursday, Oct. 19, between 5:15 and 7 p.m. in Mensa. The Candlelight Dinner will be Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 6:30 p.m. in the Heritage Ballroom in Saemann Student Center. The cost for students with a board plan is $2. This may be paid with points or cash at the time of sign up. Cost for off-board students is $10 at the time of sign up. Special dietary considerations will be taken into account.

Audition for Reformation celebration play 
Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to audition for the November production of A Parade of Witnesses. The play focuses on how Martin Luther touched people differently in his own time as conveyed through Luther’s conversations with a variety of contemporary and future personae. It will be presented as part of the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Contact Sally Malcolm with questions. Auditions will take place at the following times in Choral Hall in the FAC:
  • Monday, Oct. 9, 7 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 10, 8 p.m.
Notice from the Business Office 
Students with an account balance greater than $1,000 must contact the Business Office (Luther Hall 212, 352-8411) or Financial Aid Office (Luther Hall 212, 352-8262) as soon as possible to discuss payment and/or loan options. Students failing to pay their account balance in full or below $1,000 by Thursday, Nov. 9, may have their Winter/May Term registration cancelled by Enrollment Management. Those applying student employment wages to their account who feel their balance will be below $1,000 by the November student payroll should inform the Business Office. Those signed up for the Monthly Tuition Payment Plan and current with payments can disregard this notice.
Are you ready for Outfly? 
Sign up now for the Outfly Sand Volleyball Tournament or the Wartburg Traditions Amazing Race. Volleyball teams should have six to eight members. Amazing Race teams should have three to five members. Students needed for research study 
Students are needed for a research study concerning campus response to sexual assault. The outcomes of this research may be crucial in deciding how colleges address issues of sexual assault in the future. This study will take about an hour. Flu shots available
Noah Health Clinic recommends that students have an annual flu vaccination. The Walk-In Clinic at Waverly Health Center, 312 Ninth St. SW, will hold flu vaccination clinics on:
  • Thursday, Oct. 12, 5 to 8 p.m.
  • Thursday, Oct. 19, 5 to 8 p.m.

Please bring your insurance card and a photo ID. The Walk-In Clinic is located in the Christophel Clinic at the Orange Entrance of Waverly Health Center. Call the Christophel Clinic at 319-483-1390 to reserve your date and time.

SPIRITUAL LIFE & CAMPUS MINISTRY
 
Weekday Chapel services
Weekday services are from 10:15 to 10:35 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in Wartburg Chapel. They are a brief opportunity to gather with students, staff, and faculty to reflect on God and faith. Interfaith chapels will be held the last Wednesday of each month during the semester. It’s a great time to put regular worship on your schedule. This week’s Weekday Chapel looks like this:

Sanctuary on Wednesdays
Sanctuary is a holy space in the midst of your busy life where you can recharge and renew. Expect a relaxed time of Bible study, fellowship, music, prayers, and communion. Sanctuary takes place at 9 p.m. each Wednesday in the Chapel Commons (Chapel basement). Treats are served at 8:45 p.m.
Sunday Homecoming Worship
Sunday Homecoming Worship will be Oct. 15, at 10 a.m., in Neumann Auditorium. Wartburg choral groups, Dr. Karen Black, and the Wartburg Symphonic Band will provide music. Pastor Ramona Bouzard will give the message.
Faith Expression ministry groups
If you’d like to find out about Faith Expression ministry groups on campus, check out the SLCM Facebook page. Many of the student ministries have their own Facebook pages, too: Wartburg FCA, Catholic Knights, Adopt-a-Grandparent, Sanctuary, and Hope Overflow.

Carrie Smisek ’12 was ordained as a pastor at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Rochester, Minn., as reported by the Lonsdale News Review.

Students in Dr. Zak Montgomery's "Latinos in the U.S." captstone class are partnering with high school students from Al Exito in Hampton to teach others about Latinos' importance to the United States, as reported by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.

Sharon Regenold ’85 reflected on her career as Cedar Falls' first female firefighter and first female fire captain with the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.

The football team beat Coe 34-7, outgaining the Kohawks by 340 yards and racking up five turnovers, as reported by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls CourierKCRG, and CBS2/Fox28
