Nominate deserving young alumni — The deadline to submit a nomination for the annual Young Alumni Award is Tuesday, Nov. 15. This award is given each spring to alumni who graduated within the previous 15 years (2002-2016). The recipients are selected based on how they exemplify the mission statement and its four pillars: leadership, service, faith, and learning. Click here for more information and to submit a nomination. NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

Holiday Shoppe donations — Members of the Social Work Department will be coming around to collect donations for Holiday Shoppe on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons this week. Also be on the lookout for the trees that will be put up around campus for donations. Please e-mail Megan Howell with questions. 

Dear faculty, don’t cancel class — If you know of a conflict in your schedule that will cause you to cancel a class session, consider allowing the Center for Community Engagement staff to assist you. We could talk to your students about internships, service trips, the Des Moines Urban Studies program, or Wartburg West. Simply email jo.dorrance@warturg.edu, and we will cover the information you feel is relevant. 

Beat Luther Week — Students UKnight is celebrating Beat Luther Week! Follow along on their Facebook page for daily fun facts about the Wartburg-Luther rivalry. Stop by the Alumni & Parent Relations Office starting Wednesday, Nov. 3, to pick up this year’s Beat Luther shirt for $10 each. Students UKnight also will be tabling on Friday during lunch in the Student Center and during the game, which starts at 1 p.m. Saturday. Go Knights!

Outfly Island T-shirts — Student Senate is reordering Outfly Island T-shirts for anyone that didn’t get a chance to buy them on Outfly. Shirts are $5 and come in three colors: coral, yellow, and turquoise. To place an order, email senate@wartburg.edu with your size and color. Deadline to order is Friday, Nov. 4, by 4 p.m.

Math, Computer Science & Physics Department Seminar — The next Math, Computer Science & Physics Department Seminar will be Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 11:30 a.m., in SC 134. Craig Ogilvie, professor in physics and assistant dean in the graduate college at Iowa State University, will lead a graduate school information session. Students interested in pursuing graduate study in any STEM field are encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be served.

Phil and Lit – The next meeting of the Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society will be Friday, Nov. 4, at 4 p.m., in McCoy West of the Saemann Student Center. Dr. David McCullough, professor of biology, will be the speaker, and the title of his talk is “Veni, Vidi, Vici (I Came, I Saw, I Conquered) — The Story of Invasive Species and Their Effect on the Natives.”   

Christmas with Wartburg tickets — Tickets are on sale for shows Saturday, Dec. 3, at 3 and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 4, at 3 p.m., in Wartburg College’s Neumann Auditorium, as well as Friday, Dec. 2, at 7:30 p.m., at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines. Tickets are $18 for all Waverly performances and $20 for the West Des Moines performance. Meals will be offered in Waverly on Saturday and Sunday at 5 p.m. for an additional cost. Faculty and staff also are welcome to attend the dress rehearsal on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 30, but a free ticket is required from the ticket office. Concert and meal tickets can be purchased online at www.wartburg.edu/christmas, from 10 a.m. to noon weekdays at the ticket office in Saemann Student Center, or by calling 319-352-8691 during ticket office hours. 

Spooky Science Night — The Chemistry Club will present the second annual Halloween Spooky Science Night on Thursday, Nov. 3, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Science Center. Spread the word as science clubs prepare stations of fun halloween-themed experiments for kids in the community. Contact the Chemistry Club for details.

Cemetery tour — The Wartburg College History Club and Phi Alpha Theta honor society will host their annual Harlington Cemetery Tour on Sunday, Nov. 6. Participants can walk among the graves with Dr. Terry Lindell, professor of history, as he shares “The Forgotten History of Waverly” and points out details about burial traditions of bygone years. The tour begins at 1 p.m. in the cemetery parking lot, 1001 First St. SW, Waverly. Proceeds from the $5 admission charge will benefit the two student organizations. Reservations are required. Fall concerts for concert bands — The Wartburg College Wind Ensemble will present its annual fall concerts under the direction of Dr. Craig A. Hancock at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, in Neumann Auditorium. The Wartburg College Symphonic Band, under the direction of Dr. Scott Muntefering, will perform its fall concert Saturday, Nov. 5, at 4 p.m., in Neumann Auditorium. Admission is free to all of the concerts.

Sustainability honor — Wartburg College has been recognized as a sustainability leader in the 2016 Sustainable Campus Index, receiving high rankings in the area of water for the second time in as many years. Recognition in the water category is based on advancements in water use and rainwater management. Wartburg tied for fifth nationally in this category, which honors efforts to conserve water and protect water quality. Click here for details.

Got leaves? Wartburg College Dance Marathon is looking to rake in the dough for the Iowa City Children’s Hospital. WCDM participants will be raking yards in Waverly on Saturday, Nov. 5, and Saturday, Nov. 12. A monetary donation is requested for the service. If you have a yard that needs to be raked and you would love to donate to a great cause, contact Liz Rucker to get your name on the list.

Toy drive – Wartburg College Dance Marathon is hosting a toy drive for the Iowa City Children’s Hospital now through Thursday, Nov. 10. All donations will be given to the hospital in memory of Cindy Carlson. Suggested donations include children’s books, art supplies for kids, and board games; all donations must be new. WCDM will collect all donations from offices Wednesday, Nov. 9; please notify Liz Rucker if you would like your items to be picked up. Donations also can be dropped off in the Alumni & Parent Relations Office with Tony Smith. Please contact Liz Rucker with questions. 

Department of Labor changes — Several informational meetings regarding Department of Labor changes are planned. We will be discussing pay, accounting for hours worked, overtime, lunches and breaks, PTO, updated policies for travel, electronic devices, how to log in and out of Kronos, and any questions you have. All meetings will be in WBC 217. Contact the Human Resources & Payroll Office if you have questions.

Title IX Resource Card –
 
The Title IX Team at the college has been working on a Title IX Resource Card for faculty, staff and students. We are pleased to announce the card is finished and will be making its way to departments. The HR Office will be distributing these via campus mail, but if you run out or need extras, contact Karen Thalacker, Title IX coordinator, or stop by the HR Office.

Nominate an individual for exemplary service – The Pastor Larry Trachte Service Award recognizes staff or faculty members who embody Pastor Trachte’s enthusiasm, support, involvement, dedication, and overall commitment to Wartburg’s mission of service. Click here to nominate staff or faculty. The St. Elizabeth Award for Service recognizes members of the Wartburg community who have exemplified a commitment to service. Click here to nominate one or more current students who you feel lives out a commitment to service in, with, and for the community.

Decorate a tree for Festival of Trees – The annual Wartburg-Waverly Festival of Trees will brighten the halls of Wartburg’s Classroom Technology Center Nov. 30-Dec. 15. If your office, academic department, or group/organization would like to decorate a Christmas tree to display, please sign up by Monday, Nov. 21. A partnership between the college and Waverly Chamber of Commerce, the festival is open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and attracts more than 5,000 guests each year. 

Cathedrals and Castles May Term course – Consider registering for the May Term course HI 212 Cathedrals and Castles. Take advantage of visiting the remains of castles, cathedrals, churches, and monasteries, and learn how these structures were built and used. PROFESSIONAL NOTES

Dr. Bill Withers, professor of journalism and communication, led a midday workshop for 70 north Iowa business leaders Oct. 14 at Titonka State Bank in Forest City. The event was sponsored by Hancock County Economic Development Corp., and Withers' session focused on workplace culture and change-management for small and large businesses.

Dr. Allan Bernard, assistant professor of business administration, presented his Best Paper Award-nominated paper, “The Relationship Between Conceptual Skills and Organizational Strategy Alignment within the Information Technology Context,” at the 2016 Midwest Academy of Management Conference on Oct. 8 in Fargo, N.D.

Dr. Michaeleen Golay, assistant professor of biology, has published a paper titled “Carbon, Nitrogen, and Phosphorus Storage Across a Growing Season by the Herbaceous Layer in Urban and Preserved Temperate Hardwood Forests” in the international journal Applied Vegetation Science. The work was in collaboration with researchers from Iowa State University and the U.S. Forest Service Northern Research Station.
