Football advances, will host quarterfinal matchup
|
The Wartburg football team won against Saint John's 23-20 over the weekend and has advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA playoffs. Wartburg will host Aurora University at Walston-Hoover Stadium at noon Saturday. This is the fifth appearance in the quarterfinals in program history for the Knights. Come out and support the team as they make a run at the title!

History professor to speak on Holocaust at Kleinfeld lecture
|
Edward Westermann, a history professor at Texas A&M University-San Antonio, will deliver “Celebrating the Final Solution? Wannsee and the Intoxication of Mass Murder” at 4:45 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28, in Whitehouse Business Center 214. This is the annual Kleinfeld Lecture in German History, Culture, and Politics, which is free and open to the public.

Guest speaker set for pre-vet meeting

Deadline nears for symphony art competition
|
Submissions for the joint art competition held by the Wartburg Community Symphony and the Waldemar A. Schmidt Art Gallery must be submitted by Dec. 12-13. All artists in high school and beyond are encouraged to submit a group of four artworks inspired by the birds in Ottorino Respighi’s orchestral suite “The Birds.” The four featured birds are the dove, the hen, the nightingale, and the cuckoo. Winners will receive a cash prize and have their artwork projected during the symphony’s “Music Takes Flight” concert in February. Email gallerydirector@wartburg.edu with questions.

‘Blue’ artist to speak at closing reception
|
The Waldemar A. Schmidt Art Gallery will host a closing reception and gallery talk featuring Rachel Moser, the artist behind current exhibit “Where It Used to Be Blue.” The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 15, with the talk starting at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served. The entrance to the gallery can be found in the main lobby of the Bachmann Fine Arts Center.

Weekday Chapel services are from 10:15 to 10:35 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in Wartburg Chapel. Chapel time is a brief opportunity to gather with students, staff, and faculty to reflect on God and faith. Mondays feature faculty and staff faith stories and blessings, Wednesdays include Holy Communion to which all are welcome, and Fridays have Senior Chapels.

Dr. Kuni Terasawa, associate professor of religion, reported "A Buddhist-Christian Dialogue in East Asia in Relationship to the U.S." as an international adviser and a member of the board in the Society of Buddhist-Christian Dialogue at the American Academy of Religion in Denver, Colo., on Nov. 18.

Football, cross country teams post big results
|
Wartburg's football team defeated UW-La Crosse in the first round of the NCAA playoffs this weekend and will advance to the second round. The Knights will take on Saint John's University at noon Saturday in Collegeville, Minn. Best of luck to the team!
The men's cross country team took second place at the NCAA Championships, the team's highest-ever finish, while the women's team placed third. Christopher Collet, Jacob Green, Connor Lancial, Aubrie Fisher, Lexi Brown, Ellie Meyer, and Shaelyn Hostager were named All-American, which is a record number for both programs. Congrats!

Pickleball tournament planned
|
Wartburg Intramurals is putting together a pickleball tournament. It will take place after Thanksgiving Break on Tuesday and Thursday nights from Nov. 28 to Dec. 9. As a reminder, the Waverly-Shell Rock Area United Way and Wartburg College are currently partnering in our United Way campaign. You can set up a payroll deduction or make an outright gift online. You can also give via Venmo @WSRUnitedway or mail a donation to P.O. Box 271, Waverly, IA 50677. Your donations stay in the community through agency funding and direct service such as summer meal, school supply, holiday assistance, and coat programs that help hundreds of local families each year.

Don’t forget to set up a payroll deduction to Wartburg by Dec. 16 for the chance to win prizes. You can pick any amount toward designations of your choosing and can adjust your deduction at any time. Those who set up a new deduction of $5 or more, increase their current deduction by any amount, or designate their support toward a scholarship will be entered in a drawing. One staff member will win eight hours of paid time off, while one faculty member will win a reserved parking spot of their choosing for Winter Term. Mark your calendars for Jan. 16 to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Class schedules will be shortened to give students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to serve on campus and off. Watch the Juice, social media, and campus bulletin boards for more information.
You can help in advance by donating unwanted T-shirts for campus service projects. Collection bins will be located near the Info Desk and the Student Success Center starting Monday, Nov. 28.

Dr. Christine DeVries, associate professor of chemistry; Dr. Debora Johnson-Ross, dean of the faculty; and Dr. Caryn Riswold, professor of religion, attended the 32nd National Conference of the Lilly Fellows Program Network of Church-Related Colleges and Universities. The conference and workshop for senior administrators had the theme "Implicit Racial Bias and the Academy" and was held Oct. 27-30 at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn. |

IINspire sent two students and an alumnus to the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists conference in Anaheim, Calif., from Nov. 10-12. Carrington Bush, a fifth-year neuroscience, psychology, and history major, presented a poster titled "Effects of Induced Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries on Working and Spatial Memory in Mice," a research project she conducted last year with Caylee Garcia '22, Grace Roseen '22, Missy Shockley '22, and Dr. Eric Emmons, professor of biology. Joseline Robles Rosales, a fifth-year neuroscience and Spanish major, presented a poster titled "Effect of Maternal Parity on Cognition of Mus Musculus Pups," a project she completed last year with Autumn Derifield '22, Spencer Dodgen '22, and Dr. Samantha Larimer Bousquet, professor of biology. Jaylen McBride ’22, area coordinator for Manors, Knights Village, and The Residence, attended the conference as a Wartburg IINspire Leadership Team representative. Travel was supported by IINspire. |
